5) Gen 3. Mechanics-wise, it introduced Natures and Abilities, which changed the series for the better. Story-wise, it introduced the whole "evil team calls forth a Legendary that you have to calm down" which got stale over time de arimasu
6) Gen 6. It was higher on this list...but then I played ORAS.

XY is the real worst Gen VI game
Emerald is overrated but still good, and FRLG are mediocre unless you're new to the series, then they're really good for the occasion
BW's story is praised way too much, but BW2 is GOAT
Gen IV's Frontier is garbage, put Platinum/HGSS had some of the most fun maingame without dropping the ball at the postgame

It's not that bad. They're my least favorite games in the series, but I still enjoyed them. My biggest gripe was actually how little Kalos felt like it's own region. Kanto starters at the beginning holding mega stones as if to say "now the REAL stars of the show are here!", Snorlax blocking the road, Viridian Forest copypaste, Lapras gift, 6th gym is identical to Sabrina's, spinner tiles in villain's hideout, Lucario as a forced first mega, tons of fan favorites right at the beginning of the game, etc. The whole thing felt like "Pokémon: the 3D experience" to me, and that's not why I play these games. Seeing all these callbacks might be amazing to other people, on the other hand.

They definitely have a ton of new content, customization is a ton of fun if you picked the girl, boys get jack shit, it's certainly very nice to look at, and a ton of quality of life improvements were added to training and breeding.

I feel you would've enjoyed them a lot better at launch, though. An amazing aspect of being "Pokémon: the 3D experience" was the simultaneous worldwide launch. Discovering the region on your own, battling and trading with people around the world with your ingame teams as you went on your journey. Definitely my fondest memories of X/Y.

Second game so Pokémon still had the mystery to me. Since I'd never played anything but HG, I wasn't going into the game knowing how everything worked, so I happily ended the game with a Leavanny. The atmosphere of it all just made me like it.

Again, it's mostly the atmosphere. Johto was comfy as fuck, and so was Sinnoh. The Pokémon selection was nice, and while grinding in Johto was a bit of a pain, I worked through it.

First gen I got into competitive, and the fact that you can actually do it on a college student's free time is a major plus. Also, I rather like Kalos as a region, though I'm not gonna lie and tell you the plot isn't utter shit.

I started to play since Gen 1, and Gen 2 is the most nostlagic to me, but ultimately I think 5 & 3 are better. 5 for the gameplay (and story), 3 for the region.
I don't dislike Gen 4 but the plot was a copypaste of Gen 3's, and the region was nice but that's about it.
Gen 1 isn't that great imo, but it's still nostalgic and all.
Gen 6 did so much wrong right now that even if Z/whatever is GOAT, it'll be hard to call it good. And I don't even dislike Mega Evolutions.

I have lots of nostalgia for gen 2 and 3 since they're what I played with my friends in school.
4 has HGSS and platinum, which redeems the shifty DP games. Also phys/spec split.
6 is piss easy but it's the first time I played with friends in years, and the world just looks and feels better than ever.
5 is great but black/white where kind of dull and a lot of the best mons were limited to endgame.
1 is buggy with a lot of broken mechanics. I played it after 2, so that's probably why I'm not as nostalgic, but the first games are just hard to replay in my opinion.

I'm not trying to argue that it's the best. But the argument that it doesn't innovate at all is a poor reason to say it's not worthy of being someone's favorite. It adds a lot mechanically, and story has never been that important for a pokemon game.
Gen 2 has a great setting, great music, and a lot of in-game elements that makes it a personal favorite, nostalgia aside.
