Anyone else still around from back when we tried to put together a Mythbusters/Discovery channel themed rom hack? We spent about four days working on it a few years back but nobody with any experience rom hacking got involved, just a bunch of sprite artists and idea people.
>>24938075 /rhg/ turned into /heg/ to try to bring more discussion, it's pretty dead though. It'd probably be best to let it sit for a few months and just have a few spontaneous ROMhack threads now and then before reviving it, then when it's back it'll probably be alive for a while out of freshness like when /heg/ spawned months after /rhg/ died.
>>24938075 K, how do i get making games like these? Teach me your ways, i don't really have any talents so i might as well get started. Pluss there was a project that intrigued me a lot so i have plans
>>24940639 Well basically >someone was asking for a sprite of Jamie >some anon delivered >anon decided to do a few more >people started talking about how cool it would be if there was a Pokemon episode of Mythbusters >busting/confirming myths based on pokedex etries >would never happen but we decided a rom hack based around this idea would be cool >player was intern/cameraman >travel around collecting pokemon to fill the pokedex and help get test subjects >people the Mythbusters often got assistance from for various myths like that FBI dude were going to be gym leaders >Mythbusters themselves as professors/elite 4 and Buster was champion >shops manned by Billy Mays and Anthony Sullivan who he was doing a show with shortly before his death >a chapter of the game dedicated to shark week >I think Cash Cab, Dirty Jobs, and Man vs Wild were mentioned at some point >more anons working on more sprites and trying to find somebody who could put together a rom hack >others working on teams for important characters and which Pokemon would show up where >after a few days with no actual progress there just weren't any new threads and we all moved on with our lives
>>24941134 That would've been awesome back in like 2010 or so when this was happening. I wish I'd saved more of the stuff in those threads but unfortunately at the time I didn't know it was going to fall flat so quickly. I mostly just lurked since I'm an uncreative fuckwad.
Hi there /heg/, I'm working on remaking Drayano's Sacred Gold using Essentials. Currently have up to Union Cave mapped, functioning following Pokemon script, and all of Gen 5 + 6 Pokemon inside.
Do my maps look okay? New Bark Town is my own creation, but the later routes are following the original ROM's layout. Wanted to approach wild Pokemon availability with a similar philosophy to Reborn; shitmons + decent-average catchable in grass, good Pokemon primarily through story/events. Not looking for anything super edgy or challenging; does anyone know if there's a way to see all of the programmed dialogue in HGSS for NPC's? Can I extract it from a NARC file?
Okay, /heg/, I have an idea for a game with Essentials, wondered if you guys had any thoughts on the concept:
You inherit a Pokémon resort island from your grandfather and are tasked with bringing in visitors and residents. The island is initially completely empty aside from you, your assistant and the wild Pokémon that live there- the island is home to an enormous amount of Pokémon and they scared off the humans that used to live there, hence its desertion.
You initially start off with an Eevee (which represents your character's potential) and are shown the first grassy area of the island by your assistant. After you catch a bunch of Pokémon, other trainers show up to battle and some of the islands old inhabitants start to move back.
As you catch more Pokémon, you gain a minor celebrity status and people come to the resort to meet this wunderkind who's catching all the Pokémon. As they come to the island, it grows and more shops, houses, relaxation areas and battle areas open up. Each new resident and shop owner would give you money towards the upkeep of the island (and, of course, to buy things to catch more Pokémon).
So, obviously, the focus is more on capture than battling, but battling would be a focus too. Eventually a recently certified Gym Leader would show up and challenge you- if you impress them by defeating them, they set up shop on your island and, eventually, so do seven others leading to the eventual construction of a Gym Leader Castle (a la Pokémon Stadium) and a Pokémon League plaza.
>>24945277 Basically, the game would give you a little hub world to do everything you can in a normal Pokémon game without being forced to rigidly stick to a linear plot- you can focus on raising your team or you can focus on catching 'em all. As new areas open up, new Pokémon become available and you can traverse deeper into the island to catch all the Pokémon. Pokémon are plentiful in each area and are organised by their catch rate so it becomes more of a challenge to catch Pokémon further into the game.
Pic related is a basic map of the island. The Welcome/Administration area would be where the assistant works from and the island's major buildings like the Power Plant that would inevitably need restarting once you got enough guests, post office to receive gifts later in the game, etc. The Living Areas would be where you and your residents live as well as where the hotels for the visitors would be built. The Entertainment District is where you'd find the Game Corner, TV Station and newspaper, funfair etc. The Food Plaza, of course, speaks for itself, it's where you'd find the food court but also berry and juice shops. The Shopping Complex, again, is totally obvious, Poké Mart, Departments Store (later in the game), specialised shops, etc. The Battle Zone would feature the Gym, League, Dojo, various Stadiums and the like. The Pokémon Areas would be things like Daycare, Zoo and Safari Zone. The Relaxation Areas would include parks, Pokémon Fan Clubs, Cable Club (for in-game trades to get rare Pokémon), Fossil Lab, etc.
The other areas are Pokémon habitats, which are unlocked at milestones but certain areas would need items to reach. It would also be possible to traverse the island by train and cab once you unlocked more areas and by teleportation/use of Fly to the catching grounds.
>>24945282 So, what do you think? Totally lame or something different worth a shot? Obviously it's a totally different game and probably a lot of work but how does it sound? Would you play a game like that?
>>24941500 That's fucking huge compared to the original town. Seems a bit much, I'm not too big a purist but I don't think it fits, doesn't seem like an expansion of the town but rather putting a completely different town in its place.
>>24945282 One thing I have to ask is, how do you deal with the level curve if it's completely non-linear?
>>24945439 That is a pretty interesting problem, yeah! One supposes the immediate solution would be to have the Pokémon be of certain levels based on the catch rates, though I guess the only guaranteed way of not having you hit a wall would be to have your assistant advise you to be at a certain level before attempting a visit through a new area for the first time.
>>24945694 If you're using Essentials, there's a level scaling script hidden somewhere in the Scripts section that you can rewrite to be activated by switch.
You can duplicate the script as many times as you want. With minimal scripting knowledge you could make it so enemies scale to your party's average level, scale to your strongest monster's level, and so on. It's useful even if you're making a linear game.
>>24948108 It's a lot less cringeworthy with less shitty special characters and some fake megas/delta species ranging from pretty cool to terrible, but it has a lot more pure edge, the blood and sacrifice and evil cults kind.
Also, the creator actually browses this place, so he might pop in to say hi if playthrough threads are started.
>>24949691 I disagree with him doing that. That doesn't help anything, because frankly the edge is what makes the game entertaining in the first place. Without it it's pretty boring, and besides I disagree with toning down your own work because some people might not appreciate it. If edge is what he wants, then there's no real point taking it away.
Why does everyone bother with the gyms and shit? It will just make you do more work than you need to. Why don't we just make a game that is like the battle frontier but with more stuff? The story is a waste of time and there is only so much you can do with the existing story of gyms and the league. It should be kept simple.
