Nearing the end of the main story in Pokemon Y, tempted to start breeding for a shiny. I've literally never had a single shiny in all my years playing all the generations of pokemon.

Just finished breeding egg moves and nature for Helioptile, we'll see how this goes.

Quick question though, is there a consensus on which ability is best for Heliolisk? Everything I've seen seems to point to Dry Skin, I guess because Solar Power on something already fragile and not actually that fast is not the best idea.

Not actively shiny hunting, but yesterday I came across a shiny Murkrow. Insomnia, Lonely, "outstanding" IVs with a 31 in SpAtk.

I've found very few shinies overall, so that was nice, regardless of its actual usefulness.

Thanks! I wouldn't say my luck is THAT amazing, though. Six generations, and it's only my fourth shiny ever (and none before B/W2 and X/Y). Better than some people, but probably pretty bad compared to most people around here.

The Murkrow is kind of useless now as I have nothing left to do in X/Y, but maybe I'll trade it over to ORAS and use it there.

My first random shiny was a Wingull in Emerald followed by a Tentacool sometime after, unfortunately I lost one of my games along the way and I wasn't able to transfer anything up. My only other random shinies have been in X with a Geodude (Which died in the horde) Noctowl, Foongus and another Wingull. I'm hoping in ORAS that I can find another Tentacool while surfing again.

I also accidentally bred a shiny Totodile when bank first came out in Japan but I ended up trading that one for a Meloetta. I eventually rebred it with a good nature/stats though.

I have chosen not to go there anymore and here is why. Some users there have admitted to taking information used by attendees in chat over time shared in the form of pictures/links/conversations to look for more personal information on those people on their own time. Facebooks are being found, real names are being discovered, where people live are being found etc. Not for any threatening purposes it would seem though.

If that kind of thing makes you uncomfortable tread carefully in making the decision to go the channel.

Sorry if i'm making this sound like a bigger dramatic deal than it is or making a mountain out of a mole hill. I just personally didn't take it very well so thats being reflected a little in how i'm posting about it here.

No, Yes but it won't be as fast.

You want two of the same species, 1 from your game and another from a different game that has a different language tag. This greatly increases the chances of the egg being shiny and speeds up the process of the egg making.

The shiny charm helps aswell.

To shiny hunt via breeding you're looking at Masuda Methoding. Basically, two pokemon with different language tags (ENG, ITA, JAP, GER, etc) will have an increased chance of shiny offspring when bred. You'll still need to breed a shit ton of eggs to get within the average range of a shiny appearing but it's much better than the rate of non Masuda Method breeding.

Really depends. Sometimes I use video games, like my Chatot I named after a Monster Hunter creature, but then I named my Treecko after a type of spruce tree. Then other times I just draw a blank and come up with something that sounds like it relates to the pokemon- I named a Gastrodon "Salmon Roll" once, and my Beartic "Fever".

Week 3 of the beldum chase.

After being burned on the GTS (I can understand lying and saying a ditto has 6 IVs, that's just jewing... but lying to say it's 2 IV, Speed and Attack, when it's really HP and Special Defense? Who DOES that?) I'm back to breeding with my standby pair of 2-IV dittos, and a 5-IV beldum parent. I'm trying to get the highest speed i can, while not being concerned about special attack, so my current breeding pool is any pokemon with 31/31/31/X/31/Y...

I breed a box of eggs with each potential applicant, and then, with them at level 20-ish, i punch their stats into an IV calculator to figure out what their speed stat is.

From starting with a IV of 4 on my first 5-iv beldum... I've managed to get up to a 27 speed... and i'm hopeful for the offspring of this next box to begin showing mutations in the 30-ish range.

Okay so I've got a good swablu that I'm gonna use to breed me a shiny. My issue now is I dunno what set I want to use on it, which means I don't know what nature to breed. I'm stuck between a bulky physical set (Adamant or Impish), and a full on cleric set (Bold). I might end up making both sets eventually, but only one will be shiny.
