I would suggest X or Y because they're the first 3D games. ORAS is fine, especially since you never played Ruby or Sapphire.
Sun and Moon are fine games your first time, but if you don't like cutscenes and handholding, I wouldn't advise those ones.
Platinum, Heart Gold, and Soul Silver are some of the best games in the series, but they're harder to find, and usually expensive.

On the coming Tuesday, there will be a short USUM trailer that will reveal new Alola forms for Johto pokemon. They will make special note that the original forms of these pokemon cannot be found in USUM, can be found in the Viirtual console releases of gold and silver. One of the Alola forms will be a Sudowoodo that has adapted to look like foliage found in the Alola region.

Considering they said it would LOOK like the foliage and not BE the foliage, you're just being retarded.
They do actually hint at it in the game when you first reach the Aether Paradise.
Perfectly reasonable to think in a slightly alternate time line that ones already present in S/M would be the ones to get Alolan Formes.
The most likely candidates being Johto 'mons thanks to the G/S VC release this time and the ones in the Island Scan.
Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they actually made it so you couldn't even get the original Alolan Formes without S/M, having entirely new ones only in US/UM.
