Meh, i used to think so too and shitposted alot about this but honestly i'm not so sure anymore.

If you're around the age of 20 after D/P that's when the franchise started to be less interesting in your eyes (or at least in mind)

also the graphics from black and white onwards were a big upgrade.

Been out of school for a year now (fuck college) and have had alot of time on my hands, trying the games out and what not and after playing them i can see the appeal. (granted i've only played b/w) but since i liked it i'd imagine b/w2 and x/y i'd also probably enjoy

Sun and Moon are the worst mainline Pokémon games yet.

The level design is atrocious because it is so heavily streamlined and boring. There are no puzzles and the aptitude for exploration is at an all-time low (not completely absent). The Sevii Islands in FireRed and LeafGreen - which are separated from Kanto and mostly postgame content (not to mention in games that's 13 years old now and on far inferior hardware) - have more dungeons, puzzles and optional locations to explore than the entire Alola region. With a tiny region, things like the Mt. Lanakila elevators or the cave entrance in Wela Volcano Park that teleport you to the top of the mountain, the smallest number of towns and cities yet, this aspect is as barebones as it has ever been.

The narrative is hyper-prominent and chokes the player with dialogue and cutscenes, but they rarely add anything to the story being told. Most of the time the characters are just gushing over how cool you or the current location is. The dialogue is very one dimensional and the plot fails to make sense at critical points and is full of missed opportunities. Since you haven't played it and I don't want to spoil it I can't provide any examples though. (1/2)

The auxiliary features and content in the game is also some of the worst the franchise has yet to offer. Poké Finder is immensely grindy, repetitive and pointless. Festival Plaza is likewise a massive grind, but also requires good luck in order to get the facilities you want. The so-called "minigames" of the Plaza simply consist of running around in circles. It's like they took Pokémon Snap and the Join Avenue, removed all the cool things about them and shoehorned them into the game. Poké Pelago is very convenient, but ultimately it's just waiting, barely making it a feature. The items you can get from it could have been locked behind fun and engaging minigames like the Pokéathlon instead.

There are numerous smaller, miscellanous points to make, such as the butchered fishing, noticeable frame drops and poor optimization under certain circumstances (even on a New 3DS), and the removal of the National Pokédex.

Overall the good points of these games boil down to three things. The graphics, which are the best they have ever been (also taking into account things like move animations), the music which is mostly good although not spectacular, and the removal of HMs, one of the most annoying mechanics from older games. The other basic aspects of video games - level design, writing and content most notably - are the worst the series has had to offer yet. (2/2)
