Lurk on Smogon RMT and read the analyses, watch some high ELO battles on Showdown! and form a team (either from what you think is right or copy someone else's)
You'll get it wrong a lot but ask questions, talk to people, observe, watch some Pokétubers (I suggest PokeaimMD) and you'll be on your way. Just stay away from stuff like Pokémon Online and Verlisify.

We have only have so much semi-aquatic animals to use as water starters. What do you think of these suggestions?
True seal (Not sea lions), Lungfish, Platypus, Hippopotamus, Swan, Basilisk lizard, Yapok, Beaver, Duck, Polar Bear, Water buffalo, Water deer, Marine iguana, Anaconda, Sea krait and Newt/Salamander
Make your own water starter with these choices.

I'm in favor of these. (all BST 530 assumed)
Platypus:
Ends up as a Water/Poison tanky big bruiser since the closest thing to an offensive mon with that typing is Qwilfish, and the typing is because the platypus is one of the few mammals to produce venom.

Water deer:
Ends up as Water/Normal with a similar build and Jump Kick coverage as Sawsbuck has.

Ends up as a Water/Ghost shadow predator in the same design theory as Decidueye, maybe with a vaguely skeletal body. Pulls an Incineroar but with HP instead of Speed, where the prevos are pure Water and fleshy but the HP drops significantly when it evolves into the final Ghost form.

They each get their own custom move based on the secondary typing and custom HA since that seems to be the trend.

My best guess for the next Water starter is a small hippo since we haven't had one for three generations now. But it doesn't matter, because Greninja will always be the best Water starter anyways.

A Water Deer should be our first Water starter that would start as a dual type. Water/Normal for STAB Hyper Fang and Strong Jaw as a HA. Introduce a Water biting move too. I'll call it "Saliva Fang".

Mudsport kinda like mudslap, except instead of lowering accuracy it mainly nullifies static and any moves that would incude paralysis.
Watersport maybe does the same?
