I assume the only real reason is what they ended up doing with the legendaries.

If they just ended up doing a Kyurem or Necrozma game, Gen 5 and 7 could easily have just had 3 games. But since they went the fusion route that's what you get.

The original titles of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were Pokémon Off and Pokémon On. This was the concept for those titles; a switch to turn off and on this capabilities.

2ds is way more comfortable than 3ds, more resistant to damage as well. Plus you're not paying for a 5 minute useless gimmick. I'm really bothered that new 2ds isn't keeping the tablet design though
