I rarely ever use my tripcode. I used it for a long time in KSG where it was pretty common for people to be using tripcodes. One of the things I kind of liked about using it was that it gave me a kind of accountability for my posts which subconsciously made me put more effort into what I was saying and try to be nicer to people. It also made me shitpost far less.

So whenever I thought "hmm, I should turn my trip off before I make this bait post," I'd kind of realize how much of a shit I was being and reconsider.

My tripcode is mostly irrelevant outside of that specific general thread except in the circumstance where another cross-boarder might recognize me. And I find that kind of unlikely so I just don't even bother most of the time.

My main board is /a/ and I anon post there, mostly because I'm sort of new to watching anime and prefer to not be held accountable for the occasional retarded thing that I say. The trade-off is that I do end up funposting more than I probably should. Obviously learning some self-control or taking some autism medicine would be maximally beneficial but you can't win all the time.

I also just like predominantly anonymous conversations because they tend not to devolve into ego battles. Far too often I see people trip-posting and then having to defend something that they say, and getting into arguments with anons about whether or not something they said was retarded. When it happens to me while posting anon I'm more comfortable really considering the possibility of my own retardation instead of instantly jumping to my own defense. I would say that's the #1 most annoying thing that tripfags do, get into big arguments with multiple anons when their ego is on the line.

I think it's safe on a few boards like /vip/ and /qa/ because they're sort of meta. On /a/ and other topical boards I can see it being an issue as it would often derail into a shitstorm.

It's a way of keeping "why is X banned" threads from clogging things up, mostly.
