Turns out the author for P3 and P4 and P5 was bullshitting. He doesn't want to touch the old games out of respect, he just doesn't want to give up his treasure trove of old plots to work with. Persona Q was a rip off of Maki's plot, Persona arena ultimax was a rip off of Nyral and god knows what kind of shit he'll steal from the old games to use for Kanami's plot in DAN. Atlus is letting him do it because it's making them money and the general fanbase usually does not care for the original games enough to realize the similarities in the new games.
