Why do people like Persona 4?

It has bad writing, poorly written characters, the game is too upbeat, and too easy and casual.

P4 is my favourite Persona game. P2 had potential, but ultimately I felt that it was too rushed. It didn't help that the game mechanics made everything feel like it took place over a day or two, going from one dramatic event to the other with little to not downtime. A real sense of place and time would have done wonders for it. I really liked the characters but once again, there wasn't really enough. I would have liked to have seen more of the characters together. Having said that I've only read IS' PSP port, so I can't say anything for EP.

Liked P3 when I played it first. It's still a good game, but P4 was just such a fun game overall that I just happened to like it a lot more. I don't think it being 'too upbeat' is a slight against it, as you're implying that everything good has to be morose with an oppressive atmosphere.

If you really don't like the way Persona has gone in the design/character department(really all you have to go on in Persona 4 spinoffs and those need to fit in with the mundaneness of Persona 4), make the switch to eroge. There's plenty with Visual Novel/JRPG Gameplay and high school settings. You'll get more variety in character types because porn can't sell if it's only appealing to one audience. The audience will have less fujoshi because it's fucking eroge.
