The fast paced combat is pretty much my favorite gameplay element in SMTIV. I disliked the new fusion system (due to no Mitamas) though.

I did enjoy the overall story and world direction though, returning to humans attempting to survive among demons and such, rather than just the demon worlds from Nocturne and Strange Journey.

Is there something like a story synopsis for SMT1? Combat being so easy "broken" (zio, nerve bullets etc.) ruins everything for me, but I still want to know what transpires in the game so that I can get maximum satisfaction out of SMT2.

Implying it matters. You just get to see "Hero: Died alone in a cave" and that's about it. Maybe a few jokes like getting High Pixie instead of Pixie, and getting Kalki instead of Vishnu in order to show that there has been a passage of time since the first game.
