Yeah. Matador is probably the best Fiend, at least to start with. Capote Earring gives you:

>+172 MP (most in game, tied with other Fiend earrings)

>Null Dark
>Passive Draconic Reaction (Double auto Sukukaja on yourself at the start of every fight; this isn't a buff, so it stacks with Sukukaja and its ilk)

To top it off, in order to fuse Trumpeter you need all four Riders. To fuse Pale Rider you need Black Rider. To fuse Black Rider you need Red Rider. To fuse Red Rider you need White Rider. Depends on the demons you have with you, but 85 is definitely doable. You need to groom your demons for each specific fight, and know if buffs will or won't work on that fight. Hint: Matador gets Dekunda and Dekaja, and uses Sukukaja, Taunt, and Antichthon. Silent Prayer is good here, Debilitate and Luster Candy not so much. At least he's weak to Electric so you have something to hit for press turns; unfortunately he also has 16k HP.

Good luck man, and remember: if it's your first time finding them and you die, you need to get sent back by Charon or you'll have to hope RNG lets you find them again. After you pay Charon the first time you can save and repeatedly fight, reloading the save if you lose, without them disappearing - but they still disappear if you leave the area IIRC.

My personal favorite Persona. The story and characters are great, but the gameplay can be boring. The dungeons are better than P3/P4, but not as good as P1.

I would recommend playing P1 before P2 because of recurring characters, but be sure to play the PSP version and not the PS1 version.

So I started DDS earlier - my first SMT game based on recommendations here and elsewhere - fun so far but I have absolutely no idea what to do with my mantras now that I've unlocked the ability to level them. I've been told its good to focus on the elemental tree opposite the demon's innate element, like go fire for Seph, but how far should I take it and should I make it my priority? Also should everyone have hunt abilities or what? Any general tips would be appreciated. I'm going wjth a magic heavy build for Serph at each level up I've already decided.

I almost wonder if Persona 3 or Nocturne wouldn't be better starts. They seem a little less intimidating.

I'd honestly recommend SMTIV, it's the gentlest introduction into mainline by only raping you for the first two dungeons (Upper and Lower Naraku)

Be sure each character has "Void [skill that they're weak against]". You can build up to higher skills later on, where eventually they can get a resist that is always active, but you won't need that for a long time.
I got by with only devour, but it does help significantly to get stronger hunt skills.
Build each character to how their stats are geared (build Serph however you want, gear Heat towards physical attacks, build argilla towards magic)
Also get boost skills and debuff skills (debuffs are in the expel mantras, I think boosts are their own)
Magic on Serph is fine, that's what I went with.

I'd say give everyone a hunt ability. Ideally ever enemy in a random encounter should be killed by a hunt ability, you unlock mantras faster that way. Also hunt abilities deal almighty damage, basically non-elemental meaning it's almost guaranteed to deal damage if nothing else on that character's current movelist is working.

Also, like all MegaTen games, using buffs and debuffs are just as important as hitting enemy's weakness.

The difference with Minotaur is that at those low levels you have very few options. MC can't get Phys resist armor, and you only have two demons available who resist Phys (one of whom is level 1), and you have no way of Nulling Phys to steal press turns. You lack any form of MP recovery and you fight him after the 5th floor of Naraku, you don't have Concentrate or any buffs or debuffs that apply more than one buff or debuff at a time (whereas Minotaur gets War Cry), and you can get Walter for your partner which basically resigns you to taking a Smirked Labrys Strike.

Compare this to, say, King Kenji, who is a hard bossfight but you can get Fire, Dark, and Physical Null on your demons to steal press turns; you can give MC accessories to make Ancient Curse suck less or have methods of dealing with it like Amrita. Unless Kenji decides to spam Megidola, nothing about the fight feels unreasonable. Fighting Minotaur with Walter at a time when your demon and skill pool resembles the shallow end of a rain puddle can feel unreasonable.

From what I understand, Satan has mutliple points where he's neutral towards Gun damage (Bullets) and Phys.
Since he likes to use Hama a lot, and humans null Hama and aren't weak to anything, it helps a lot to have a gunner in the 3rd party slot.
Also I think the reason why Phys is used so often is because crits give half press turns, so you can easily get Satan to red HP.

Never waste level ups in Nocturne. Especially in Hard Mode.

Keep a defensive Magatama (one with appropriate resistances) equipped at all times until you're close to a level up. Switch to a Magatama that has a skill you want / is one that you want to max out, only when you're sure you'll level up in the next few fights or so.
Save frequently, cuz if you get the level up on your defensive Magatama, and it has no other skills to teach you / you're not at the level to learn a skill from it yet, then that there is a "wasted level".

That's when you reload your previous save, and micromanage better this time.

Items like Wagtail Plume, which you probably never use or buy on Normal Mode, become useful on Hard Mode for what you can do with them. You'll need to raid Rag's Jewelry to get items like Pot of Death, Mirrors, etc.
Wagtail Plume as well as Charm status in general is OP as Fuck. Abuse the hell out of situational and unused items as much as you can.

suggests this:

Puthim in front with the Dual Ring. This means he can attack four times
every round if he so chooses. This rate of weakness-striking means that
on a turn that has everyone on the field, everyone goes at least twice.
Give Seraph High Critical, Counter, and MAX/MIN Critical to maximize his
damage output. Obviously, fight Seth at the appropriate Solar Noise.
Make the Charge combo available, too (see the Satan section on details)
andgive the Synchro Ring to one of the other members to waste only
one-half pressturn doing it.
I suggest having Pyriphlegethon around as well as the third members' best
elemental attack. Mind Charge is nice and Last Word is not a bad idea
either. This makes using Argilla alot easier.
Give someone Mediarahan. It will help.

That's a relief but my problem is that I don't plan to do Neutral route again (or any time soon). This is my second play through (did a fresh start after getting best ending) and I still have to go for Law and Chaos endings.
