The size of the map was fine. What bothered me was the irrelevance of some provinces, which should provide certain resources, but didn't. Many urban provinces that didn't provide manpower or leadership for example. But that's not a problem of the map size per se

the way pradox' games work is pretty simple, a premade map which puts infos it reads out of premade country/province/history files on top of them with a rudimentary ai controlled by lua files to make it move.

that shouldnt be really hard for some hobby programmers to recreate?

That's why it's always a good idea to keep a small amount of mil points in reserve when playing EU 4, otherwise you may get delicious 2-3x revolts from a single province just as you spent all your points.

That sounds like a rather interesting idea, why didn't thesy just go with that. Sort of like the Council in CK2. I never had the feeling of real progress in the EU4 research system. It just felt exactly like purchasing a building, not like initiating reseearch and then see it pay off.

CK 1 was a better dynastic game, if you started as a vassal, you had to build your way up through dynastic unions, going from count to king took several generations, in CK 2 you just save money, make faction to obtain realm, hire mercenaries, win.

In CK 1 characters actually died in battles and from diseases, that can happen in CK 2 but is much more uncommon than in 1.

CK 2 is a game about blobbing and is far too easy to keep your realm united, in CK 1 you could blob, but the larger your realm the more unstable it was and civil wars were assured.

CK 1 was event driven, while CK 2 is just about decisions.
You want to kill someone? here use a plot.
You want to change culture or religion? here, use a decision
CK 2 has a much better interface and AI and it's not so buggy but it doesn't have that RPG feeling CK 1 had.

Wouldn't be as different from the EU3 mechanics, but since monarch power is used in so many other ways there'd be reason to not invest everything and stockpile instead.

How you get monarch power is limited but you have a lot of options in how to spend it, so everything has an opportunity cost. I prefer it to the system in EU3 where you put what you needed to in minting and stability and dumped the rest into whatever tech you wanted next.

Mountain is actually really fucking good, but it'll force you to tech it and you don't have any mountain provinces in Finland, just hills. If you do decide to keep them, make sure to put them in a separate division under a Commando leader. Finland has several good ones.

Tech stuff that's in your year or before it, generally you'll want to prioritize like this:
research speed in industry > infantry techs > land doctrine > other industry techs > armor techs > rest

I've reinstalled the game and played a campaign for 8 hours straight, quick saving every once in a while until the crashed during autosave.
