I haven't failed a mission yet, I haven't even come down to final turn yet, I already got gud long ago, it hasn't made playing with a constant gun at your back any more entertaining.

The least they could have possible done is make decent AI instead of expendable, mindless zerg rushers who do nothing but follow simple patterns(stun lancers, sectoids and Mutons(I've noticed in my campaign that they really like to suppress the nearest enemy on their first turn) are extremely guilty of this). I think they should have taken the Invisible Inc route by having the timer not fail you(for extraction missions, I'm okay with container recovery missions for the most part), but instead penalize you. Didn't get to the evac in time? More reinforcements coming in, or something like a gunship begins to rain mortar shells over the place destroying cover and any unit that gets caught in the blast radius, for example(Hey I never said I was a balancing expert). Stronger enemies start dropping in, they start deploying better tactics like smoke grenades and suppression and flanking, etc

Also like Invisible Inc the music should get more and more intense depending on your alert status

I think I expected too much of the game and got myself disappointed as a result. It's a shame because I was actually looking forward to playing vanilla for more than just a single playthrough.

It's because they almost always dash to get to what they're attacking, meaning they get a defensive bonus against overwatch.

The best way to counter stun lancers is bladestorm. The second best way to counter stun lancers is to flashbang them. The third best way is to just kill them.

Supression kind of works too because of the improved overwatch shot. Acid/flame nades also work well

Follow the tweaks here; yes, they're from EU/EW. They still work, the Engine file is more-or-less the same.

This won't fix everything, but it definitely has a marked improvement on your quality of play.

A few other tweaks you can do, and the physx cache max/min, you should set to 4x what it says or so if your computer is newish.

Fuck that. It would be fine if they could actually fail their psionic attacks once in a fucking while, but they NEVER do. Hell, it would be fine if they didn't throw them at you by the dozens before you get weapons which can one shot them. But no. This is literally giving the aliens mutons at the beginning of the game, minus grenades and with a weaker ranged attack, but with mind control and the ability to raise zombies and make your soldiers panic and make them go "DERP DERP DERP".

FUCK THEM. The only good thing about sectoids is the boner I get from killing one.

I say wait a few months for patches and mods. It's pretty much EU 1.5. It's fairly fun but I just feel like it wasn't challenging enough(beyond chrysalids, ethereal and those flying floater types. Archons? Also the final mission was pretty tight).
It's decent for one playthrough but I doubt you'd want to play it again unless you want a higher difficulty level. Second wave options where?

For old xcom go with openxcom as it gets them running on current pcs with ease
For Firaxis xcom you can either do EU with all the DLC and expansions (should be cheap in steam sale) or just start with 2 which just came out

the way that the avatar counter works I found it best to let the thing tick to full, but have ways to drop avatar progress ready at all times.

Basically ignore avatar progress, let the 21 day countdown start, and assault a base when the countdown gets to 2-3 days. This drops avatar progress and resets the 21 day timer.

If you actually try to "keep the bar low" it allows the ayy's to advance 2+ bars out of multiple facilities that need to much expansion to chase down.

I think you actually can stall the avatar project indefinitely by using skull clamp on advent troops and keep finding their sites. Double good because it lets your specs do a sprint range instant kill on commanders or elite shielders at the same time.

I did the first blacksite missions by the time I saw my first Muton. I was dicking around researching shit and going to those scavenging missions, because I heard that once you destroy one of the Avatar facilities it goes down by a huge chunk so it was actually better to take your time and let the doom clock increase.

And that's a fucking lie, because destroying a facility reduces it by 1. I started on Commander and I'm not considering either restarting the entire game or reducing difficulty. Shit is getting way too fucking hard.

There's all sorts of options to change the chances of your soldiers wearing funny le hats and colors but absolutely nothing to adjust gender ratio which is the most fundamental fucking characteristic of your soldier's appearance.

The best I could do was delete a line of code that loaded female soldiers' models so they're all invisible.

Just from what I've seen and read within the .inis

Commander and above include basic buffs to enemy units and skew the strategy layer in the alien's favor through research times and avatar progress. Additionally, there is no limit to the amount of offensive actions the aliens can take towards the player per turn in the tactical layer. (it's five on Veteran and below, although frankly, I've never known groups of five plus aliens to all fire on their turn anyway.)

The lower difficulties all skew RNG in the player's favor, and there are provisions in the .ini for corrections to chances based on hit streaks/miss streaks, as well as whether or not XCOM units have been injured or killed in that mission. I'm not entirely sure how the values I'm seeing are expressed in the game, but once again the difficulty is expressed in such a way that all levels below Impossible are essentially accommodations made to the player, with Impossible being the 1.0 setting.

I don't mind the turn limits. I even kind of like the pressure it they put on you. It makes missions fucking intense and victory so much more rewarding. I feel that for the most part, the amount of turns we get are almost perfectly balanced, except for the 8 turn missions. I never finish the 8 turn objectives with any time to spare, they always come right down to the wire, and I usually have to play carelessly and make mistakes along the way to finish within the time limit. I think if the 8 turn missions went up to 9 turns, it would be perfect.

So after having played this a little bit now, I think I'm of the opinion that they made elements worse or left broken elements as they are more than they improved elements.

The current way mods are done in Xcom 2 is fucking terrible because you can't just force load a save and take any of the bugs that may occur on the chin.

Games like fallout/oblivion would always allow you to load games with missing content, it'd just warn you before hand.

If it's a mod which won't even matter (the only one that could conceivably fuck you over is the leader one at the moment anyway) then why should it not let you load?

If there's no way around this, the modding community is already massively gimped and Firaxis are fucking retarded, I think they might end up fixing such a glaring hole though.

grenaded the roof mec, and that patrol fell to its death. codex disabled my weapons for a round. my ranger broke off from the main group to attack the beacon. next 2 turns my guys got damaged by and killed the codex. after killing the beacon, muton+2 advent soldiers showed up + enemy air drop. ranger melee'd 2 to death. had 2 health left, muton meleed her. everyone but rookie panicks. rookie steps up, crits muton, dodges next two attacks, then grenades the advent soldiers.

The tempo was up to you, but you would be proportionally rewarded. Now all we've got is an arbitrary number defining how much gameplay we're allowed on a mission for no other reason than "well shit, we can't balance some people using overwatch!"

You get enough predator armor for everyone as soon as you get Shen to build it and it's good enough to last a while. It's only the skeleton and EXO suits that are one offs. I'd only build one or two special suits, by the time I had 6 it was time to upgrade to power armor and I'd wasted tons of cores.

I'd probably take a medic if the game allowed squads of 8 rather than 6.

For all of LW's problems, I think the 8 squadsize is a lot better than most people think, it's easy to say 'well the maps aren't designed for it' which is true.

But LW classes had capability for many support roles and fire support classes that don't have to be on the front of combat.

Being able to take both a tank and a damge focused grenidier, being able to take both a blademaster and a phantom, being able to take both a hacker and a medic, and both a gunslinger and long watch sniper would be interesting.

If I had one more slot on squads I'd take a combat medic, but as it stands, 6 guys just barely gives you enough firepower.

Well, not FINE, but I'm running it. Had to turn the graphical settings down, and there are times, especially during loading screens, when the FPS slows to slideshow levels. Considering how little is usually going on at the screen, it's a huge resource hog. And it's made my graphics card drivers crash like twice, although I think that's more ATI's fault.

Much of the stuff in XCOM2 was balanced after Beaglerush and other "elite" players, plus the Long War players.

Of course normal casual players are going to have a bad time. It takes 15-25 days to heal a wound, Shaken can only be removed by killing a enemy AND taking no damage in a mission, doom clock is constantly creating stress, and timed missions everywhere.

They're honestly pretty fair. You do get a bit frustrated at points because it's XCOM and you are gonna get shit on and delayed.

But there's always mods. Day one on Workshop there are two mods. One removes them and one pushes them a bit further in your favor.

Does the prototype count as a soldier? Does putting it down "kill" it? Tried loading a save where the objective is completed and the game just outright crashes

I don't think that's strictly the case.

However, Firaxis seems to have looked towards Long War and also balanced in response to really good players.

This isn't a bad thing. Long War had some concepts which weren't terrible. In addition the original Beaglerush cheese strategy was totally broken but also only really worked against a single pod.

If you play Legendary, expect it to be comparable to Impossible from the previous game. Sure the aliens don't have the insane stats they had in Impossible EU, but the game puts pressure on you to a similar degree.

Missing a shot goes from worrying about being in the right cover spot to worrying about being in the right cover spot AND being close to losing not only the mission but your troops as well as they'll be stuck there.

It puts way too much emphasis on rushing for a game that's best played by killing dangerous enemies. It makes it impossible to play right.

The devs stated they were fine with XCOM 2 being a tutorial for Long War. And yes, they masturbate to Beaglerush. There's a reason they invited him to streams and showcase the game. Every change they've done have been to counter cheap tactics that he and other elites used.

Lots of casual players are having a bad time because they feel pressured by both ingame timers and the doom clock. Stress is a real thing.

Is this literally, LITERALLY the only go-to you and posters like you have? I don't know who beahlerush is other than I assume some youtube ~star~ who cheesed the game with overwatch, because these posts always manage to devolve into talking about him. I've never done this. I don't particularly think XCOM 2 is all that hard, timers or no, I've still yet to just completely fail a mission, playing on commander for the time being. With all that said, the timers are still not a fun mechanic, they're a gimmick that just feels lazy after a while because it becomes obvious that the AI is still retarded and they need to prod you to go faster and potentially make more bad decisions so the AI can capitalize.
