I just got my ass kicked on one on Commander, but I made a string of stupid mistakes trying to save a downed trooper.
Take your time, you do literally have all the time in the world on blacksite missions. Also pepper your angus for a MEC in close quarters.
Im running on high textures with AA off, Vsync is a must, and shawdows option turned down to directional only. The rest is medium or off.
The game is playable.

I think its worth it. I was hype as fuck for it this week waiting on it and all.
The game's difficulty is definitely higher compared to Xcom1, its like long war's difficulty was taken as the baseline. Youll get your shit pushed in by the starting enemies, especially the sectoids which can just cuck your shit up if not taken out asap.
So I feel that its worth it, the only legit complaint is stuttering, but i think thats because of the game loading and there is also some weird frame rate drops occasionally at odd times like when using a battle scanner in certain locations, but they havent taken away from me absolutely loving the game.

Well, you could buy it now if you want, give it a try for the 90-120 minutes Steam allows then refund if you get unplayable performance then just keep an eye on it until it gets any patches or improvements.
For what it's worth, my performance while below what it should be hasn't stopped me from playing at all. I get full 60fps when playing, it's just made me dial it down to medium instead of high settings. I don't regret buying it.

It's harder than Long War imo because of the timers. LW team didnt want timers but I XCOM2 made them work and it feels good blowing holes in a wall and going loud to get to a goal in time.
That is why you bring a sharpshooter, they can reliably one shot the relay early game. All you have to do is get another soldier in range of it. You could have even had him run up to provide the squadsight then fall back
the timers are not a big deal. desu i haven't been punished for being too slow yet at all, and it makes me wonder how these shitters are fucking up so bad they're losing entire squads because they couldn't uphold the time limit.
also, the idea that seems to be going around that "timers aren't tactical" is absolutely fucking retarded. no, you're not allowed to move 2 tiles per turn until every situation is in your favor. but to claim there aren't multiple routes to objectives, multiple angles/terrains to work, multiple ways to deal with multiple types of packs is fucking absurd

So traveling on the map seems to spend time on the clock in the corner but doesn't seem to advance research or anything, what's up with that? Does avatar progress or anything bad actually advance while I'm flying around?
You know what the worst part is? If they run out of psychic bullshit to pull on you or get flashbanged, they suddenly remember they have a gun. Every time I've seen a sectoid shoot something it's hit and 4/5 times it's critted.
I agree, you can always just say fuck the meld and retreat then let the niggers come to you. Cant really do that with timed missions and they are definitely done right, I agree that it feels incredible when you just go loud and fast, blowing shit up to get the objective on the final turn.
I dont really understand why people cry about it so much and I feel that those who do cry about it just are too used to overwatch turtling and playing ultra safe or get cucked because they think they will have extra moves after reaching the VIP or whatever.

I've never had much trouble with them though, so. They always seem to prioritize making zombies in my game, which is nice.
Because they look better. Plus the battlecruisers are fucking 100x better as Vaygr because they shoot that big fucking red plasma or whatever then launch a bunch of missiles from the top, where Hiigaran just sweep laser beams over and over.
the game isn't perfect, but imo the design decisions regarding the dynamics between the concealment system and the timed missions is really smart and works really well. makes you actually have to plan your moves, and actually try to set up advantageous situations

No, they will still bumrush you. That's unavoidable. What IS avoidable is the chance for knocking your dudes out. If you have over 4 health, stun lancers cannot knock you out, only disorient or stun you.
Because if you come from xcom 1, directly to 2, you dont think much of them. You just think they got some visual upgrade and thats it. Its more of a 1st time surprise when theyll fuck you up.
I dont know what it is, but seeing those missiles slowly fly from one ship to another gives me such a fucking boner. Its the reason I started playing Vaygr over Hiigaran

This won't fix everything, but it definitely has a marked improvement on your quality of play.

Does corpse carry actually do anything? Ive carried an unconcious soldier before but I was even wondering if leaving them on the field would have any negative consequences, the obvious answer would be that you lose them, but just want to be 100% sure.
People forgot about beagleluck. According to the AI files, they have only a 66% chance of psizombie if a corpse is available. For beagle, they did it all the time, which made them predictable to him.

If you complete a mission where you get auto-extracted at the end, usually the "kill all aliums" type mission objectives, then everyone is picked up in the skyranger.
If you complete a mission where you have to make it to an extraction point, and a soldier is left behind, they get captured. If you leave a dead body behind then you lose whatever custom mods/equipment they had.

On missions where you have to extract to finish, yes. If you don't take back an unconscious dude, they get captured. If you don't take back a dead dude, you lose whatever equipment they had.
That is only partially true. At least from my own observations.
From what I've seen, if an attack takes you below 4 health you can be knocked out. Final health after the attack, rather than actual health is what is important.

I'm only a few hours in, nothing special has happened, and I've defended 1-2 retaliation strikes, but the avatar project started at around 4-5 blips in... it's just increased again and I'm heading to a retaliation site, so how do you freeze or revert the process?
I did that. It wasn't hard since I just took out a patrol and had nothing else around. Got to unload a full round into it. Sniper shot took it under half, it split, then grenades and sword on the last ones

All your points are dead on, sectoids can fuck your shit though if they get lucky and you can very easily run out of supply but theres almost always 1 supply thing waiting for you to scan it and clearing debris gives more supply.

Gunslingers are fucking broken.
Have some buddies along to tear away armor, and a gunslinger with the proper ammo can solo pretty much anything other than a Codex, Andromedon or Sectopod.
xcom was failing without the commander. they were at their last rope with their last men. it was a last second asspull from being completely eradicated. not saying it's a great story but it makes sense.

One could assume that the guy who was picked to run XCOM, an organization staffed by the best of the best, would have the best commander you can find, and a good commander is something the resistance really fucking needs.

One of my rangers got that ability that gives you a guaranteed hit for like, 3 ammo.
Being able to oneshot aliens from across the map with a crit boosted shotgun is funny as fuck.

ADVENT HP scales surprisingly well, and the later game aliens are really good at drawing out their deaths.

you can sword attack over some half covers, and you can choose the angle at which they attack so if you know no one is going to be aiming at him next turn its fine
I still agree with you though, it should deal more damage without having to allocate all those promotion points into it.

33 fucking turns, but everyone except a rookie made it. My resolve was thoroughly tested on this one.
I've had better results just shotgunning problems away until the Ranger gets bladestorm / Reaper. Up until then, using the blade is generally a liability.
They become top tier for retaliation missions and become quite good in cleaning up the messes Grenadiers make.
Posts like these are why I always stop "hunt the avenger" Dark Events above all else.

If you're asking for an either or, I prefer Implacable. It lets you pull off some flanks you otherwise wouldn't be able too, or lets you get into position to pull off another flank.
It provides a lot of flexibility, which I really value. Bladestorm only really helps keep angry bugs and Andromedons away.

Implacable is like hit and run except it doesnt allow you to shoot twice. Since hit and run is one of the best skills in long dong, i would recommend implacable. Bladestorm is like a really shitty version of the 4 tile reaction ability in long dong. A really shitty version.
The timer feels really constricting at first, but there is something fun about barely marking it out of the mission zone by the skin of your teeth
