Yeah, it's easy to miss character stuff, too, sometimes. I missed Eileen my first playthrough, you need to find her in every location at the right time. Same for characters like Alfred.

Go through on NG+, you get to keep everything, the only thing that resets are key items and doors, enemies have more health and do more damage, but drop a lot more echoes. Keep a wiki and this general handy for it, ask questions.

Remember - explore everything!

It scales really well with gems, but is plain bad without it.

Without good gems, its only real use is controlling large mobs with the tricked R1s. Even then, the staminacost/damage ration is so bad that you're not stunlocking anything to death with it, it's more or less just to keep things at bay while you kite backwards. You can also kite large, powerful singular mobs with the tricked R2 as it'll stagger most things right through their poise, breaks hyperarmor and pancakes on the followup. Once again, though, the damage isn't great for the stamina cost so it takes you a while to kill things via this method. It's mostly just safe.

It has the serration bonus on its whole moveset, so it's slightly better vs beasts (I used one extensively in Ailing Loran and it was helpful). It can also help a lot vs bosses with hard-to-reach weakpoints. You can hit Laurence's head when he's standing with the standing/running/jumping R2, and the same is true of defiled amy, BLB, etc. You can even nosebop the hotdog from safe distance (though beware the charge).

It becomes much stronger with gems, since is whole moveset is blunt and benefits from adept gems, and its mediocre natural scaling benefits hugely from a heavy abyssal. Fully gemmed, it's a high-damage powerhouse with an awesome moveset. Before that point, it's just a highly versatile wet noodle.

Holy shit the beast cutter is fucking bad i switched to a +3 no gems saw cleaver and it's so much better than a +5 Beast cutter with 2 gems.

You can get the bow with a little practice and patience at level 20 (or as soon as you open up the DLC) by just running to the other side of the door in the chapel and kiting Simon with backstabs and running away and letting him reset. I used the bow through the whole game on my Bloodtinge build character, it is so choice, if you have the means I highly recommend it.

Last boss of expansion is really, really, really, really, really hard. I can't do it, everyone I chime summon dies so fast, then I try and dodge and dodge and dodge, after 20-30 seconds of dodging it finally looks like an opening for even just one attack and not get greedy and instantly get hit with a two hit instant death combo.

I am pretty close to giving up and juts stop playing and waiting for another game to come out. Helldivers come out free to play in a day or two.

I'd argue it has, at the very least, as much depth as DaS1. DaS has more build variety, but that's just the nature of the game, and I don't think that speaks to the depth of the combat system. Wider move-sets, no backstab fishing, unique weapons, it's all there.
Also, Koreans aren't as big a deal as you make them out to be. I FC with 3 27% Phys up on an Uncanny Chikage. That's not super optimized, nor super strong, and I do fine. As long as you have decent gems and a non-gimped build at the very least, you can compete.

I'd try Strength for your first build, get the Hunter's Axe and Pistol, when you unlock the DLC, make a run for the Whirlygig Saw. They will pretty much see you through the game. Pump Vit, End and Strength, you don't really need much else. But also have fun, if you see something that looks fun, try it out, but be mindful of stat requirements. Some weapons are Strength, some are Skill, some are mixtures of a bunch of different stats.

Also, exploration is the key to everything, talk to everyone, try stuff out.

Strength is just good anyway. You'll be on the offensive a lot, doing as much damage as possible. You can do parries, but they scale with skill, so don't worry about them too much. They're a back up strategy for you for now.

Remember, this is an offensive game, dodge INTO attacks, around them, rarely every away from them. Dodging is a fundamental skill you'll need to learn. Learn the tracking and movesets of enemies. Once you learn just how different it is gameplay-wise from Dark Souls, you'll get into the flow. It's a great fucking game.

Not necessarily it isn't. You can parry regardless, pumping skill does just do more damage. A parry can allow you time to dodge behind an enemy, line up another attack or back off and heal. It needn't just be for damage.

You can parry Maria, charge up an Axe R2 and knock her the fuck over when she stands up.
