pic related is what I use.
a little description of everything, from top to bottom:
- additional trainset, kinda endgame, is better than maglevs
- additional trainset, mostly for early games (late 19th up to mid 20th century)
- additional trains for the same trainset
- additional houses and roads, changes to more modern stuff as time goes on
- additional bridges
- self explanatory, good for early games
- additional stations, very basic and simple looking
- enlarges the toolbars if you play on high resoution (fullHD and above)
- additional monorail and maglev trains
- self explanatory, adds a modern looking waypoint
- adds trams and tramtracks
- massive addition of stations and station tiles, very versatile, good if you like to customize your station or you are simply bored by the stock ones. most of the stuff is animated.
- additional road vehicles, specialized in heavy stuff and cargo handling
- additional ships
- massive road vehicle pack, goes from horse carriages to modern stuff, has both passenger and cargo truck/trams
- additional houses for early gmes
- same as Industrial Stations Renewal, but with less stuff
- same as above
- changes how rails, fences and electricity poles look
- self explanatory, changes the stock dock
- additional stations, good for passengers
- additional planes
- Massive industry pack. Adds a lot of new industries and cargo types, changes how the industry production works. This is a must have
- additional train tracks for some added difficulty, starts with small speed limited tracks and unlocks better tracks as time goes on.
also, I'm using a patchpack, which is a new .exe file of the game that someone recompiled to add some mods that can't simply be downloaded as the rest.
there is a lot of stuff in there, so here is the list
http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?t=66892#p1085300
it's mainly a difficulty mod, which means most of the stuff is there to make things harder, but there are a bunch of very good utilities too.

>>128783856
you only really need to use two signals: the regular ones and the path ones, the rest is optional and only barely useful for very complex shit.
It all becomes very easy if you just focus on those two signals and try to understand their basics
>>128761383
pfff please anon, how new are you?
goddamn thread, stop dying on me,
my whole town posted yesternight
all lost...
in CS is there a way to figure out how much electricity your city currently needs and uses?
I recall in SC4 that it would tell you how much funding something needed and you could adjust the power output of say a coal plant to over or under how much you actually need.
All I see in CS is the budget panel which I can put up or down and have no way of seeing if everyone is getting enough electricity.
>>128718737
here is previous failed thread, just for posterity...
>>128725389
now to reply the fellow anon:
> how should I lay out train tracks
I was actually thinking of having the rail underground going up on main street (will also reach further for the more distant villages)
I dislike the separation between surface train and subway, so I'll have them undergrain and build sub-train stations instead...
I'm looking to have the main bus terminal near the university as well, so it should go by there, but for the central station (one connecting to outside), will probably go in the south edge.
The terrain is very slopey, another reason to go underground too, for the other side of the river, its good plan really, but sad I can't merge both the passenger a cargo tracks.
>tfw most lines are green

It's comfy as shit, it takes a little bit to understand everything, but that's nothing that a quick run on the stock game can't solve
>>128793054
I always play for a while until my train network gets to the point where I really need 4-wide mainlines and complex junctions then I spend 2 hours trying to design an optimally balanced mainline 4 track 8 way interchange and get too stressed and give up.
>>128794224
Play bigger maps, spread things around, use FIRS so you can build a shitload of different networks before needing to go all 4lane with one, Learn to play with cargodist.
There are a lot of other challenges if you don't like going crazy with junctions and mainlines
>>128793054
I used to play simutrans a lot, but always got overwhelmed with customization options, ending up with unbalanced stuff, and trying to build the perfect map with my own cities...

Would you recommend watching a tutorial on youtube or something or just diving right into the game?
>>128800973
just dive it man, if not read documentation like any true open-saucer does!
>>128800973
there is an ingame tutorial.
you have to download it from the "check online content" button (which opens the ingame mod downloader) and then typing "tutorial" in the search box.
there is a scenario, a script and an AI to download, all to make a single tutorial scenario that will teach you the basics.
anyway, youtube has plenty of tutorials and the stock game is easy enough for you to play without that many problems if you have a basic understanding of what's happening on screen.

- Le Corbusier
>>128827405
What's that? A roundabout where only the inner lane can join the roundabout?
>>128829261
It a main national road interchange with smaller roads.
The main highway (left to right) goes right through, but has a turning and merging lanes on both sides.
There is a smaller circle in middle that allows one coming from anywhere to make a left or U turn.
This looks pretty good for rural interchanges, but will never happen with such sharp curves...
Just bought CS yesterday and while putzing around I saw some two residential zoned square houses, so now I'm making a cute town of tiny houses and shops.
Anyone know what the smallest footprint industrial zoned buildings will still pop up? And if I ever wanted to build autism efficient are there any reasons to want to build small houses?
That feeling when you start to care to much about your game intersections that you actually read up real road engineering manuals...
>>128830396
I'm actually starting to do this now, reason is I have the realistic population mod (in vanilla game there is too few pop in big buildings)
In practice the big houses have the same capacity as small ones, so building 2x2 squares at time might give better picture of a suburban area...
Just build factory bigs, they can be build smaller, but models are ugly...

>>128831089
Yeah, I was just about to start taking down data and doing some maths just to see about population per square. But first I want to find the smallest footprints which looks to be two squares for regular residential and industrial (which does look silly), and 2x2 for commercial. If this town makes it to high density I'll also check those out.
>>128831383
Thanks! I'll definitely add this to my mods list, which I figure I'll mess with in about a week, I want to play vanilla for now though.

I'm not sure how to proceed now and whether there's still a point in making a hideous suburban sprawl.

whats wrong with suburban sprawls?
>>128880868
How do I justify having a 4x4 tile villa next to a 1x1 shack with the residential zoning
I've never seen such discrepancies in the suburbs, and it's really bugging me. Either I just leave that zone empty, or I have completely everything completely grid so all the zone tiles are always aligned.
>>128880524
>>128880232
Having your industry and commercial/residential sharing a single highway junction is going to give you massive problems in really short order. Consider buying the land tile north of your city and segregating traffic.
Segregate zones, eliminate traffic
>>128880232
dear god matey, I've seen ugly cities, but you got a talent...
>>128881170
The slow way to do it is to zone 1x1 residential in a pattern along the road leaving alternate 1x1 blocks unzoned.
Then you wait for your 1x1 zones to build their 1x1 shacks. Finally, you zone the blank blocks et voila - a full row of 1x1 shacks.
>>128881453
well I do live around Toronto
>>128881338
> Segregate zones, eliminate traffic
that's not really how it works no....
as is reality you rather have commerce right next to where your people live, they will have to travel that distance to work and shop for stuff...
Industrial too but you rather have them away from residences due to pollution/noise, every one will have to go to work and go back home, but lots of cargo come and go from industrial, so you rather have them nearby your highways, but small good trucks also go from industrial to your commerce, so its better to have your commerce near your city avenues as well, midway between industry and residence...
>>128881609
by the way zoning 1x1 block is really bad idea, I think they have only level 1 buildings... pretty ugly too...
the way I'm doing now is buildin 2 blocks as front and extend the yard as far as it goes 2x2-3-4
>>128881927
My picture is simplified. I usually mix commercial and residential zones so that there's always a commercial zone at least 1 city block near residential. Industry should be kept away from Comm/Resi traffic flows
>>128882134
though I'm thinking of having closer industry, when level/tech get up enough
I think some policies help with this too, lower noise/pollution

It's... installing the OS.... That's what it's doing... There isn't anything else it can be doing...
Hours? What the fuck are you talking about? If you're talking about raw installation time, then that depends on your PC, not the OS you're trying to install unless the OS is really fucked up.
Have you thought that maybe you're just bad at this? It's the drivers and the availability of programs that makes the difference between the 2 OS's, not the fucking installation process.
>>128897196
Windows 10 will install in under 30 minutes with full updates and all your drivers.
If you have already signed in to a windows 10 computer and use a microsoft account as a login, it also syncs all your contacts, universal applications, settings, backgrounds, themes, etc
If you can't figure out UEFI booting with windows, you're a fucking idiot
Steam OS is an OpenGL client with filters and predesigned settings for popular OpenGL games. It still suffers all the driver performance issues that all other linux distributions have.

>>128898787
>>128897869
installing linux (ubuntu or similar) is straight forward:
>check, keyboard, mouse, internet, partition, username, install
I got a recent all-in-one pc for my farther, it came with win8, if you followed the OEM setup windows it self took 2h to start (thats a pre-installed setup...)
then I went I tried windows 7, because, that’s what he liked... couldn't get efi booting to work, simply because almost none of the installation media come with it... got it to boot, mouse and keyboard wouldn't work... because the f*ing usb drivers weren't working....and thats not 3.0 usb portsno fucken usb driver for fucks sake...
then after the failure with win7 we decided to settle on win10, the fucking update process took 3 hours at least.... as it also did on my gf new laptop... so don't fucking say it is a breeze...
Windows may have some positive points, but its installation process is definitely not one of them...
>>128901148
>>128901682
Did they change the name of the industries on FIRS2?
Because I am still playing on the second to last version of the patchpack which is only compatible with FIRS1 and they are called fishing grounds and harbours and you connect those two to make a profitable fishing route.
>>128900980
One tip: don't go crazy with trainsets, most of them are not really made to work with each other and you get crazy price fluctuations between trains from different sets.
Also: disable inflation, always disable inflation on every game that is not 100% vanilla
>>128902220
I remain...
>>128902409
yeah, sanbanks it seemed it was just a pixel hunt problem. Do you enable breakdowns? I find them very annoying. They just make a mess of my networks.
>>128901972
I suppose you are playing with the newer FIRS, which has different names apparently, anyway I have this for fishing.
On fishing grounds you have to actually click a specific tile (the highest one on the north corner) when setting orders, even if the actual "industry" is spread across multiple tiles.
so try clicking around if you can't set orders.
A screenshot might help, if the problem persists
>>128901972
Pic related, the greenie thing circled red is your dock.
I used to play without breakdowns, they were just plain annoying, but from this patchpack's notes, I'll try them out
>>128902409
They're called both, seemingly
And I never mix trainsets, don't worry about that. Didn't think about the inflation thing though, will do.
>>128903263
Thanks anon. And I had a micro-stroke (and forgot how to play for 10 minutes) and was believing ships could dock on the fishing dock ahaha.
>>128903263
Wait nevermind, sandbank is the harbor's name, it's still fishing grounds
>>128903007
Nope, no breakdowns for me too, even if the patchpack I use has some new cool breakdowns which are slightly less annoying (trains get variable damage and they slow down instead of stopping, with variable speed penalty depending on the damage sustained), but they still make a mess so i turned them off anyway.
I just upgraded a good bunch of my trains, which caused a slight delay in the delivery of stuff to a station, which in turn caused cargodist to panic and throw yellow and orange lines all around the network.

>>128932464
>how do you got a bigger UI, mine was tiny...
there is a mod to get from the ingame downloader called "BigUI"
>does exchange between transport ( A->B->C ) happens automatically, why is there a exchange option?
Can you show me what you are talking about? It might be a feature I never use so you might have to refresh my memory with a screenshot
>what the timetable, got nothing from that...
the timetable is supposed to make your life easier if you want to have scheduled departures/arrivals at stations or to have your vehicles spaced equally on their route, useful for passenger services.
basically, it measures the time it takes for a vehicle to reach its destinations and the time it spends at a station to make some sort of travel plan for all the vehicles with the same orders to follow.
have a read at this, it's kinda complicated to explain here
https://wiki.openttd.org/Timetable
>>128933671
>exchange between transport ( A->B->C )
I meant like for, passanger wants to get to C, he takes a transport to B then another to C,
I think there is a option of this for cargo, unload button
>>128934538
I think you are looking for the "transfer" order.
with a transfer order any passenger or cargo is unloaded at the station and it stays in that station until something else picks it up, even if there is an accepting industry in range of the station.
anyway, if you play with cargodist enabled for passengers (settings>environment>cargo distribution>distribution mode for passengers. Manual means cargodist is disabled, symmetric/asymmetric is enabled) you might not need the transfer order as every passenger already has a destination set and they won't leave any station until they reach it, so you can get away with unload orders too in this case.
so your typical order list could be:
Vechicle 1
station A: normal order or full load order
station B: transfer order
Vehicle 2
station B: normal order or full load order
station C: unload order
>>128935417

>>128978776
Same thing here in Finland. The effect is furthered by the fact that most of them are pine trees. When the wind blows through them, you can almost imagine them to be monster-sized fields of wheat.

Actually yes. Here eucaliptos go to paper manufacture. Other things are used for furniture and construction. So the next dlc is called Snowfall...
Skylines - Snowfall confirmed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D16RJNPRFxQ
>In Snowfall, the difficulty heats up when the city cools down, thanks to a new in-game temperature reading that will have residents bundling up for warmth when the weather outside is frightful. Cosmetic weather, composed of rain and fog, will be added to Cities: Skylines as part of a free update, along with other features to be announced soon. Players who own Snowfall will get to face new challenges such as ensuring that their city infrastructure can handle seasonal heating demands – and, when the snow starts falling, that the roads can stay clear. New snowplow services will be required to prevent traffic from freezing in place, while new all-weather trams and expanded public transit options can help residents and visitors alike get around town – and visit the new winter parks and landmarks available in Snowfall.
Snowfall will include:
>Now is the Winter of This Content: Rain and fog for existing maps, plus a new “Winter” map theme with snow and all of its challenges
>The Streetcars You Desire: Expanded public transportation options, including easier management of existing lines – and Trams, a new system demanded by fans
>World Warmth, Too: Cold weather increases demands for electricity, unless new water-based heat systems are in place
>Plowers to the People: Build a snowplow depot to keep traffic flowing during winter weather, and employ new road maintenance systems to keep your streets in shape

I already checked all the possible one way issues and there are at least two clear paths that the fire engines could take but still nothing.
I have the same problem with the police station also.
What can be done?
pls respond

no idea what you talking about...
but the game is awesome, you're playing it wrong...
play it as the ruler living his life, there is now 'winning', some say its even funnier to play to lose...
can't find available waifus to marry, wtf... there are like hundreds of options...
hard is to find a suitable one that can provide good alliance nearby.
And even if not, marry the lowborn, who fucking cares about prestige, just don't die a virgin...at least in game

>new map type instead of giving snow to the default maps
This is the exact same mistake the European Set had.
>>129094378
Maybe that anon picked a ruler with modified religion. With the interaction distance limitation in place he could well have no one to marry.
>>129094196
fine looking layout mate...
is the driving hand left?
you might try switching it, or maybe switching the rotarys to counter clockwise
either way, don't worry too much, services can reach much further even if it isn't showing green...
>>129091045
>those puns
Also, for everyone saying 'this is content light' remeber that After Dark was practically content-free and yet nighttime alone is enough to save the entire DLC.
>>129094196
humm or maybe that sharp curve left into the unserviced road is not getting a turning lane...
in which case changing the rotary would also fix it...
>>129094743
Plus it's only $15 and goes on sale constantly.
>>129094743
Nightime was a free update though
>>129094840
Yeah exactly.
That's my point.
The DLCs are bullshit but they usually have one killer feature that makes it not a waste of time even while the rest of the DLC is. This is how Paracocks has always functioned.
It's not that exciting, but I think we should wait and see what rain and snow look like in game before calling it garbage. I feel like rain will send the comfy-metre through the roof.
>>129094378
>play it as the ruler living his life
Well apparently rulers lives consist of watching the years fly by at 5x speed because all options to make changes in the country are greyed out, too expensive or denied by other rulers. I can't even declare war on a lowly independent baron without a Casus Belli. I'm the fucking King, I declare war where I like, I don't need a reason.
Who's supposed to be stopping me, the Medieval UN? Who is stopping me declaring wars with my levies already raised and ready to strike?
I just don't understand why so many constrictions placed on the player in CKII so I never got into it.
>>129095613
>Who's supposed to be stopping me, the Medieval UN?
People simply refuse to obey your command.
There's no such thing as an absolute monarch, because monarchs rely on others to carry out their orders. You are perceived to lack legitimacy to prosecute the war and so your commands are not obeyed.
QQ more.
>>129095613
>Who's supposed to be stopping me, the Medieval UN? Who is stopping me declaring wars with my levies already raised and ready to strike?
False difficulty.
>>129095613
>just don't understand why so many constrictions placed on the player in CKII so I never got into it.
Because Medieval politics were a huge bitch, and it's hard to simulate that in a game with out arbitrary rules.
Honestly it sounds like EU 4 might be more you're speed.
>>129091045
>"Winter" map theme
Does that mean that there won't be any real seasons, just nonwinter maps (which are just what we already have) and special winter maps where it's all snow, all the time?
>>129096223
Exactly. It's pretty much what you can already do now using mods. Just a retexture of everything and with a few additional ploppable buildings.
>>129094606
Traffic's on the right, it doesn't really matter though because all the roads are one way two lanes so at times it might look like it's on the left.
If i were to reverse all the one ways the road would become green yes, but the one just right of it would turn grey instead. I might check the turning lane thing but the rest of the city basically repeats this layout so it shouldn't work there as well but it does...
I wanted to test this layout to see if i could shed traffic as much as possible, there isn't a single traffic light in all the city so i hope everything will be flowing smoothly.

Download Industry Quadrupler
you get a .dat file you just drop into your <install>/plugins/ folder so instead of factories employing 20 people they employ 80, making the game much more realistic
you can do the same for malls and commercial services, add info overlays, or just unlock rewards and reduce global crime if you want.
it's a lot cleaner than the other option which involves installing major patches, but the latter offers much more substantial differences

what "gameplay" could you even add to a city builder?
aerial, the bit in the top left on the peninsula is gonna be a fishing town a bit like tilamook or something with a lighthosue
>>129102842
Actual city building, perhaps? The game is a good transport simulator and nothing else, all the other issues are solved instantly by thoughtlessly plopping down the required services. The simulation of anything but traffic is a joke and money might as well not exist the way it prints itself. The game is so easy you have to actively fight the mechanics to develop areas that aren't filled with luxury villas and skyscrapers.
>>129103168
>Actual city building
which entails what, exactly?
>>129103582
A proper simulation of land value that takes more into account than the brainless checklist of school-clinic-park, an education system that does not fill your entire city with PhDs the moment you place down a university, a crime system that isn't a binary "is there a police station in the area" check, proximity to different zone specialties and wealth levels as well as traffic having a significant impact on development of well-off and commercial zones, regional scale relations and trade with other cities and most important of all, money actually not being in endless supply.

While it's true that normalising the layout makes it more intuitive and easier on one's sanity it also makes it impossible to drive in somewhat straight lines across the city, adding quite a bit of travel time which would then probably cause more traffic.
Also, regarding the autism, i'll try and defend myself saying that i didn't model the terrain nor the outer ring of freeway.

It's not a living city though. The immersion is non-existant when compared to Simcity 4. In Simcity 4 the neighbourhoods had their own perks and grew at their own paces. You had shithole neighbourhoods, that slowly evolved over time, and over time you would get the first sky rises to appear. It would take work and it would all happen organically. Not to mention you had a whole ton of different quirks (The unlockable shit was actually fun, not just random buildings, like the mayors mantion or the army base for when you struggled) and disasters to play with. In C:S you just place some highways, zone it as HIGH DENSITY, and boom, high rises. That's it. Not to mention the retardation of the newest DLC, with people going to school at night or other dumb shit.
Also C:S feels way more autistic to me. The messing with traffic and lane arrows to get around the retarded AI is a lot more dirty than Simcity 4.

SimCity is probably a better game, no doubt, but what gets me with C:S is just that, the people. it's what got me hooked with Tropico too. it might be admittedly shallow as fuck when it comes to development and progress, and in a lot of other areas too, but it's a pretty good vehicle for a sort of "garden game" where you just let shit grow and admire it.
and it does feel pretty organic at times too
>create new housing district for a planned industrial project over natural resources
>have to re route highway and shit
>traffic gets fucked
>city core has to be dug up, widened, and in general un fucked
>many old local businesses are flattened due to construction, and since the area has grown since their establishment, they are replaced with mega malls and bullshit
>unincorporated satellite community is responsible for the destruction of cherished small time store and diners across town
it definitely has its moments
and I said it before, watching a dude take the bus to the train just straight up arouses me

>>129161082
It actually is fairly practical. Most water systems utilize a small network of re-circulation pumps to maintain pressure. If you've ever seen weird, fenced-off sheds that's usually what they are.
In fact most of the piping used to deliver water to most of your city probably isn't any larger than an inch or two in diameter.

yeah, my city doesn't really need it either.
I just feel for the car-less long distance commuters I guess
also you don't want to take a bus, or, god forbid, multiple buses across my city if you want arrive before dying of starvation
I have sketched out my neighborhoods. Building the foundation for the waterfront downtown area is key project right now. But that farmland is gonna have 2 go soon as we start filling up.

Fuck I just realized the seawalls look like shit at that zoom level.

don't put a traffic light at the end of a freeway for a start?

>Highway Engineering for Dummies: What not to do; third edition
one of my only good expansions
>>129164929
got bored of that save.
here's the new one
>>129172968
I don't understand how to efficiently get traffic into my city though
it starts you off with that retarded road design right off that bat, I don't see why I can't merge the two 3 lanes into one six lane.
remember when we didnt have night time lights
fuckign disgusting
>>129174875
well from what I can tell, you're turning a 3 lane one way road into a four lane, two way road that doesn't really have anywhere to go in the opposite direction
might as well start by making it one way all the way down, and the other one one way as well but in the opposite direction. that's a good way to start it flowing, but to unfuck the bottle neck, you can't have stop lights on the intersections, which you do with that handy dandy traffic mod I don't have, or with some cs voodoo road magic no one truly understands
saved
count the dicks in this picture
the state of this thread though
So when was the new dlc out then?
>>129108516
>How the fuck do you half-ass a tram?
Limit trams to roads, no off-street trams, trams share bus stops, trams share traffic light phases. Basically reskin a bus and put tram-track textures on the road when the tram route is drawn between tram stops.
I hope none of this is true though. I'd like to see the trams of CiM2 at a bare minimum.

>>129182620
are all three lanes actually functional?

Nah, it's just for show
But doing one way roads is good enough on ottd
any good banished mods?

Realistic Population and Consumption Mod
Yes or No?
I'm really damn angry about the new Expansion. I want more content for the core game not a single snow only map.
>>129195228
they probably have a big more stuff to show, just in the trailer alone I saw trams, that could be fun.
>>129173180
Because of your crushing incompetence in road planning?

>csl is a traffic management game
Except commuting doesnt even matter
>>129146769
Thats because sc is set in the 1970s or something
CSL is set in the 2000s, and frankly you can actually just build highrises in the middle of nowhere if you want to.
Nothing says a city must grow "organically" in the year >2010
>>129145717
>ottd
>its super fun as a model railway simulator
>the best way to play is still using planes only
Why are planes so op? I can have like 4 airports with planes zoomig between them carrying only mail and passengers and have the game run on auto and just watch the dosh roll in
>>129145717
Because muh curved roads
srsly, sc4 would be perfect if it had curvy roads and shit, but no it isnt perfect becausse of this
>>129200087
But it does have curved roads. Vanilla doesn't, obviously, but mods have added curved roads.

>>129200030
OpenTTD is not about money, you can earn mad dosh extremely easily regardless of the vehicles you use, unless you use patches that introduce maintenance costs, infrastructure costs, make building and terraforming a lot more expensive and add a lot more limits when building near cities (but you never go bankrupt anyway unless you actively try to do so).
Sure you can plop airports at the corners of the map and watch the planes fly until you get bored, but honestly what's the point? You are not even playing like that.
With trains and trucks you have to constantly micromanage them, plan tracks so you don't end up with gridlock or traffic jams, optimise stations so trains can flow easily, balance the cargo produced vs the capacity of your network and stuff like that. You never just spectate the game when playing with trains.
I guess they added planes because that's still an important feature to have in a transportation simulator, but trains are the core of the game.
You can probably do the same with city building games: build a small town, make sure everything runs and then just hit fast forward until you get bored, but you are losing on a lot of gameplay like that.

SC4 with curved roads just for anon >>129200389
>>129200614
Train systems arent that hard to do though, you just build more tracks next to the ones you already have. Ill admit there is some simple.joy in trains
But roads vehicles are boring. Traffic jams basically never happen and if they do its at the stop so therea nothing you can do anyway
>>129166504

I'm down to start a new MP game if you want, it's been ages since the last time I played MP so I don't even know how to set up a server
