Free Friends 1 was my first editing project, or the second by other standards (but it was the first one that I completed and released).

The art is definitely the main draw. Some games ride on VA star power, some bear the weight of their franchise, others write a 50+ hour story, and some games just showcase some fucking kawaii art (and kawaii art of fucking). I'd say FF1 falls into the last category myself, but even so I found the light side/good route to be surprisingly nuanced.

Why? Because the COMMON route, aka before you get to make any choices, involves you, the teacher, raping one of your hopelessly naive students. The light side route covers just what kind of circumstances might drive two people with such a traumatic, negative event in their history together back into each other's arms in a different light, and just how they move past that one event to find happiness together. It's a tale of love, forgiveness, and redemption by the time it reaches its conclusion. It won't win any Academy Awards, but it'll probably hook you in far more than expected from a "stereotypical cheap nukige". Pic related, I honestly hnnnnnng'd at the line in question, and I consider myself a pretty difficult person to affect in matters of the heart.

The darkside/corruption route feels far more formulaic, to be fair. It's unlikely that either of its "good" (for certain definitions of good) or "bad" ends will be anything new to you, but if you're into that sort of thing, you'll probably enjoy them purely for the fact that someone had the balls to write such edgy stuff with nice art assets anyways. That the writers pack two relatively polarized stories in the same package though is a nice bonus. If you insist on playing the "whole thing", I do recommend going down the darkside route first and saving the lightside route to end your Free Friends experience.

I'll also say that the upcoming FF2, which I also edited, has slightly better writing (not just because I got more experience; the writers definitely got better too!) in both the story pacing and porny bits. If it suffers anywhere, it's that it feels much more contrived than FF1 in terms of scenario. The hero and heroine aren't just teacher and student, they're ALSO brother and sister? Despite the overall higher quality of the writing, that hung over me like some kind of specter the entire way through. If you can fully turn off your sense of disbelief though (something I have some amount of trouble with, which is probably something I should get over) I'd recommend getting it when it comes out too.

If you want to pirate them, I'm not going to stop you, but if you do I do ask that you consider buying them afterwards if you sincerely enjoyed them. Or at least buy one and pirate the other if you think the price we ask is a bit high, or even just hold onto your money and buy the next MG release that interests you. Sale count/total revenue isn't even a question of profits; high sales numbers overall, even on "unrelated" licenses, show Japanese devs as a whole that they stand to profit by allowing their games to be localized.

Kami no Ue Mahoutsukai is really good so I recommend it to just about anyone who doesn't mind a lack of action plots.
