It's a proven fact that most threads made before 750 have anime OPs, and most threads made after 750 have gamedev/agdg related OPs.

Strange isn't it? It's as if the anime posters have to make a thread early so they can force their memes before a normal thread can be made.

Fraps works, but it'll leave borders in your footage so you'll have to edit it.
Hypercam works, but it's choppy as fuck.
I think other programs don't have a "record this area" feature like hypercam does, even if they do unity's player is not very optimal. You'll have the cursor flashing in the footage half the time as well.
Better to just build it.

did you change this at all from demo day? I played that and replayed it just now.
I wondered what it would play like if you bounce-able when small instead of big, and you actually float when big.
So at your smallest you would be a super ball (highly maneuverable on ground), at your biggest you would be a helium balloon (only way to get altitude).

Are you married to the whole inflating thing Dobson? You normally just toggle between big and small, why not have just different "forms"? like Glover or Within a deep forest.

The biggest problem you have right now is the lack of control you give the player, which isn't inherently bad. That's the only reason Octodad is fun, and half of the fun in Katamari is trying to control your katamari, but even then you can jump and boost and stuff.
>>
>>128653127
I'll always have gamedev/animating as a hobby but to be able to live off of it is obviously preferable
>>
>>128654401
>did you change this at all from demo day? I played that and replayed it just now.
I did a few changes aesthetically but not much in terms of gameplay. Just a bit of variable changing.
> You normally just toggle between big and small, why not have just different "forms"? like Glover or Within a deep forest.
I've thought about something like this, like a way to switch between Ball and Crawl modes. Crawl would be slower but with movement that's a lot more easier to control and lets you jump around and climb walls maybe?
Going to do a bit more research and try those games out, thanks for the feedback!

I don't know how I feel about asset stores. I'm looking at these environment packs that people are using to make actual commercial games and thinking the future doesn't look too good if everyone is just reusing the same assets from a store. Back in the day, devs made entire environments and levels themselves, but these days many simply download their entire levels from environment assets on the store because they're allowed to be used in full release games. How long until nearly every game has at least a couple of the exact same boss, creatures, or environments as other games? It feels so plug and play to me, and it worries me for the future of mostly indie games as a whole.
>>
>>128655702
I'm studying modular asset creation. In some people's hands the same assets can look entirely different. That being said i will put my shit up on the asset store for sure, i wanna profit off of nodevs who think money can buy a good game.

Yes, but how long until every haunted house you go into is the same one. Every time you find ruins they look oddly familiar. The trees and outside environments appear to be from the exact same game. Hey wait, I've seen this boss in another game, and these weapons I'm using, and this inventory system. Oh wow, this is my room? It was my room in the last game I played too.

you are right, i agree but your assumption about the future is wrong

in the future there would be mega asset packs that contain over 200 3D objects just like kenny asset pack and alikes, then you could mix it all up to compose your own game

Speaking seriously about assets for a second. I can download a fps controller, animated arms and gun models, and a dungeon/outdoor level that can randomly generate different looking environment for a couple of bucks, then use it all with blueprints to finish whatever I don't understand with the code. Then just add my own flair to the game like my own models, like edit the gun model a little and change a few things. Most FPS are the same anyway, so this should be fine right? The assets are proven, so I can probably even make money on a service like Steam.

>>128659030
The little consistent oddity of a game needs to be there to feel not genetic. Of course you'd need to tweak things with some personalized shader or whatever to make it look not shit.

reposting my owl

It follows a path of waypoints around the map and I can set the rotation speed so it takes turns in a smoother way. I didn't texture it and I think I made the skeleton/mesh too poorly to have it sit like a bird and fold its wings like birds do, but it flies ok. You'll have to catch it mid-air to find either a hint towards a candy cane or a straight up candy cane (permanent speed boost).

>>
>>128659284
Because FPS games need level design cohesive with the mechanics and enemies, and just level design period which randomly generated environments won't do.
Any good FPS has something that makes it different, and I doubt an FPS controller asset has shooting of a high enough quality to make that alone be it's gimmick.
>>
>>128659030
Sure, you can make a game that way.
You can also finish a game a day if you remake tetris or pong, but would you want to do either?
Using asset store stuff is great if you can't do something yourself, or if you need it as an example to learn, but if that's the only thing you use you won't be making a new game, just a mishmash of things that have nothing to do with each other.

It is shamefully bare at the moment, but I've promised myself to do even if it's just a bit every day and post/save an image or gif of progress. Let's see where this takes me.

I've started roguelikes too many times and abandoned them many times as well. In GM, Unity, SFML/SDL and C++, Löve, XNA, Javascript, ncurses... It doesn't matter.. It's always a matter of letting a day slip by and I lose all hope.

I expect the incentive of showing progress to a bunch of strangers on the internet who don't give a shit to be a huge boost in productivity.

When setting a variable you use one =
When comparing a variable you use two ==

If you're using a single equals-sign, you're testing whether variable successfully assigns to true instead of evaluating whether variable is equal to true, which would require a double equals-sign.

Truly shit progress will always be made fun of. Mediocre progress will either get no response, or shallow praise below a certain reply threshold ('nice!' 'good work'), and beyond that threshold (I'd say ~4+ replies) it's decidedly 'good.' Good or great progress will always have a high number of replies, and they can be exclusively good, bad, or more often, a mix. Progress with a high volume of exclusively negative replies can, however, also apply to 'truly shit' progress.

Just kidding. All progress is good progress!

I'm doing a pixel graphics game because of development time. But to somehow justify myself to it at least I want to be a purist about it, and limit myself in palette and effects.

I want to rotate a sprite, and since the game is actually in low resolution scaled up, pixels are consistent in size, but jesus fuck it becomes a jagged mess. Is there any other approach to this kind of thing? Or should I do rotations by hand on the sprites?

If your game requires 360 degrees of motion then no, hand-drawing angles isn't really going to cut it (especially if the rotating sprite is animated). It's a choice between having pixel purity and a jagged mess or being memed at for rixels.

How do I make my character move towards the click? I already got a bunch of shitty code that barely works but is enough, this code makes the mouse "fire" a ray and then gives back the coordinates at which it hit. I only need the X and Z coordinates, as Y is pretty much useless right now, is there any way to make my character move towards a position while ignoring the Y coordinate? I tried MoveTowards, but it's pretty crappy and it haves a tendency to clip through walls and I can't find a way to make it ignore the Y coordinates.

Are you already confident with your gamedev abilities? If you're a complete beginner, 2D will be easier to learn. If you already have enough experience to make a full game then you can do 3D.

Do people naturally become more emotionally-invested in stories with a silent protagonist?

Does any kind of "effect" silent protagonists have on people dissipate if there's a big cast of supporting characters like Breath of Fire games or Dark Cloud, compared to a story where the player is basically "on their own" like Undertale/Cave Story or Zelda/Pokemon?

Naming and customization are more important than it'll look at first glance.
I'll take darkest dungeon for example. Naming your characters and having the choice between three color swaps are enough to get more invested in the game.

As for the silent character, an interesting hero don't need to be silent. If he doesn't take dumb decisions, the player will probably be okay with it.

>>
>>128677470
It's just a matter of style dude, you could go with monochromatic Dwarf Fortress tiles and still make a sweet game. I've been playing some Link's Awakening and wanted to do something like Isaac with swords. Perhaps some Dark Souls complex combat mechanics in there, but I don't know if I can pull it off.

If pen and paper role playing games teach us anything is that you're writing a game for the brain first and foremost, not just the eyes. Also that friendship has a price... Aw I miss DnD.

For now I'll make a generic realtime roguelike with a loose grid and see where things take me from there.

Heist game anon here.

Yeah, the faggot that is making a 30s Mafia strategic bank heisting game. So far the heister selection and movement works, I can move the heister around and shit with the mouse, selecting him with a click and all that stuff.

While slow, progress is happening. I still need to work on the collisions of the heisters, as they tend to phase through walls, but that's understandable, as I'm a gigantic fucking retard who "fixes" shit by causing extra bugs.

Isn't Darkest Dungeon pretty much devoid of plot?

I guess it's my fault for failing to mention it, but I'm talking about a heavily-story-driven game. Something seeped in lore and narrative, with the player driven by a story.
In that sense, making a silent protagonist is much more difficult than in a lightly-narrated Zelda clone or a sandbox game/dungeon crawler. I'm just wondering if that difficulty could lead to players being more attached to the protagonist and events surrounding them.

I was thinking about giving the characters 3 different stances that, for now, changed their speed. What should they be? Bear in mind this is an strategic game where you are trying to reach a point without being seen, but shit can hit the fan and you might need to shoot a few faggots.

I was thinking about:
Stealth: Slow, but makes no noise and you can hide easily
Normal: Walking speed, makes normal noise, good for passing quickly through areas without any guards or where you already killed them but you still don't want to be too noisy
"SHIT HITS THE FAN" mode where you just run around, guns out, shooting everyone.

I have no name for the Shit Hits The Fan mode.

It's the step by step execution mode, a kind of debugger mode. So there is only one instruction executed at the time, until you click again on the button. It's usefull to check if everything is going exactly as planned.

You are supposed to create a whole dictionary just to have a simple duo <string, something>.

I read that struct are entirely recopied each time you pass them as arguments, contrary to objects. Except if you use "ref" as in "public void say_something (ref My_Struct struct_something)", so you keep the initial struct without creating a new one.

I don't know what happens when you use Tuples, if they are considered like objects or some kind of structs.

>dont you think the creators of "Edge" might sue you? its a very similar feeling game..
No, Edge is about direct control: you press the right arrow key and the cube goes to the right.
Their other game Rush is about indirect ground control: you put arrows on the ground and cubes change directions when they see them.

My game is about indirect AI control: you create an AI which controls the cube.

No matter what, I should contact the Edge guys to show them my game, just to be polite. So far, Zach Barth (SpaceChem, Infinifactory, TIS-100) told me it was neat and Factorio guys said it was an interesting game.

By the way, you can download the game right now (Windows, Linux, Mac), so feel free to try it by yourself:

Pff. That's just the pleb story. You need to find all the secret solutions in all levels to get the true story.
You will have to avoid all stars and never respect any instruction to get the true ending. Pic related, avoiding stars in the very first level.

>oh, ya im not exactly sure about how that stuff works in c# in particular unfortunately (internally)
Except if you are doing an ultra long 1 second loop, you usually don't have to care about that kind of stuff.
What matters is to avoid memory leaks, especially with textures and strings.

Don't do 500 times my_string += "this stuff", rather use a StringBuilder. But you will rarely do this kind of stuff, except if you are outputing txt files somewhere.
On the other hand, loaded textures / materials have to always be destroyed, or else they stay in the RAM.
I don't know if you are using Unity, but it's the GameObject.Destroy () method.
(of course if you destroy a material in use elsewhere you will have problems)

Unity has a very tricky way to handle materials (each time you directly access the material it creates another instance), so things can go out of hands easily.

Yes, it's a temporary UI. Because no matter what amount of effort I put into it, everything will be scrapped to be redone (games changes, new art, etc). And I already scrapped 80% of the work I did previously on interfaces.

You don't need to reblog or like other peoples stuff, you don't need to answer random questions people send you. You can use Tumblr as just a blog.

Try setting y to y+1 in your left/right movement code (where you are checking condition). I think when you are jumping and you land you are at y+1 now and left/right is only checking for base y anon

Well I'm not saying that hopoo should release his own game in open source, but many people are asking 2 things: Bug fixing (especially in multiplayer) and mods. I never worked with GM but I bet my ass that the engine is the major obstacle here.

progress! i finished a tile system that has multiple layers, so i can have different sprites behind and in front of the (blue rectangle) player character on the same tile. it's also all independent of the actual collision tiles

now i have to write something to read tile maps + room data from a file. and also implement doors and some way to move between rooms...

>>
>>128694064
that's alright, just know that pixel art has the same foundations as any other art
it's painfully obvious when someone is using pixel art as a crutch, just like when someone is drawing "in their style" as a crutch
>>
>it's a meltdown episode
>>
>>128694410
because i am mentally ill and insecure and arikado was making a better metroidvania than me and the artists i tricked into working with me
but that doesn't matter now because my shitposting and cancerous behavior has caused my artists to leave me and everyone here saw IRC chat logs of me being a psychotic little cunt who wanted to be agdg's darling
now i just sit in a corner and mumble "danny" to myself and other anons here all day like sourcefam

Read hopoo's tumblr if you want more details, but let me give you a basic rundown. About 6 months ago Hopoo hired someone to fix up RoR, and they did, there's way less bugs than before. But regarding everything else, Hopoo's said that he'd have to build everything from scratch again because the game wasn't designed to get content updates, and had started that he'd like to either do a sequel or remake sort of thing. And finally, Hopoo said that GM doesn't support mods even though it does, so idk

Two people dislike the character sketch... This bums me out, as I like it, but I never trust my own taste over the taste of others in such matters.

I AM gonna keep the logo as-is, though. Look at the logos for MLB, NFL, NBA, etc (which it's meant to imitate), you don't see a lot of hard corners on the outside.

>>
>>128694573
Yes, things in the background should be smaller. Having smaller bricks as the foreground and bigger bricks as the background actually makes me see it kind of weird and inverted, like the background is supposed to be popping out.

So make the background bricks smaller and the foreground bricks bigger. It doesn't matter if the bricks are the size of a person, it's a video game with extremely basic graphics, no one is going to care about bricks vs human size.

The other side of the argument is that the backgrounds should show more detail, because the foregrounds/platform should be very basic because all the player cares about them is that they are bright and solid so they know where they can stand.
>>
>>128682098

in some places yeah but there should be a mechanical cleanliness to the authoritarian areas.
>>
>>128695402
Zoom in. You're clearly 1 pixel into the platform.
Most likely, the vertical collision isn't correctly accounting for vertical speed.

That's because I literally traced a render of that pose with the paintbrush tool in a bunch of mouse strokes.

It was a sloppy, scribbly effect I really liked... but it's obviously not a preference shared by most, so I'll probably drop it.

I can see that, I wasn't going to rush straight into it. I meant that more like "I understand that it is difficult but I'd like to create it anyways"

Any attempt I have at pixel art I'd very much do drawing before hand, especially for scale. It helps that the game I'm doing is a very simple multiplayer one rather than something big. There are probably going to be about 2 or 3 characters tops.
