Reminder to add unskippable animations for actions that are done often. This will help pad out your game's playtime.

Example:

Pick up item - 1 second pick up animation
Open door - 1-2 second door open animation (you could increase this in tense games by making the door open slower)
Death - 3 second death animation, 3 second fade out/menu fade in time, 3 second score add-up time, then 1 second "restart" button fade in
Loading - Add an extra 5 seconds to the loading time even if it's already loaded

Those should help get you started with making your game longer

Progress: Got some more maths right and did the unit tests for them. Next up is making it all efficient.

After will work on my ECS system a bit more. Kinda hard to work it out without adding singletons, though. Then I should be done with my engine and finally get to do the art. Been reading up on loomis and learning heaps.

this is something i'm worried about. making an adventure or rpg game you'd want at least 8 hours worth of gameplay. when you think about it, that's a shitload of content to make.

Make a game you like about things you like. Post a demo on V or VG and hope it gains traction from there.

You know your getting some form of traction when people naturally want to share your demo without you saying or they start waifu-ing your characters/requesting drawing of them in draw threads or on Tumblr/Fur-affintiy/DeviantArt/Etc.

The most important thing about the first step is praying that the things you like or find entertaining is the thing everyone else feels the same way about. And if not, how you can present it in a way someone who wouldnt, would like it.

What the fuck? Literally all Unity users will tell you to use raycasting for ground checking for performances and then you're telling me that it's expensive??

>Raycasting against a mesh collider is really expensive.

>>128527598
Oh god another unity tutorial babby.
How long till you start posting your shitty rolling sphere videos?
>>
>>128527598
expensive is relative
you can fire alot of rays per frame and it will still take a barely measurable amount of time
just do what they say and if it drops your framerate to 1/3 go do something else

Lots of different ones
The most popular are
3d: unity and unreal
2d: gamemaker, with construct 2d pretty far behind
2d has "frameworks" as well that do less work for you than an engine does, such as love2d or XNA or haxelflixel

usually 2d is strongly recommended for beginners

If a game is good, I'll keep it, but it's no easy task making a 2 hour good game.

Try making your game 2:30 that why they can't refund.

Refunds are a good thing for the consumer and should be welcomed.

LISTEN UP YOU PRIMITIVE SCREWHEADS!

This is a collection of random shit I've done in game maker over the years. It is my firm conviction that beginners, or some of the more braindead retards on here, should look through this as there's a bunch of content and tricks to using game maker that I've accrued over the years. Off the top of my head, there are:
- dialogue boxes
- perfect platforming mechanics (and simple too)
- stealth mechanics
- top down shooter gameplay
- various implementations of inventories (array-based, object-based)
- about 1/4 of a decent puzzle platformer (called Phil.exe)
- a random level generator that saves rooms from 1 game maker file to a folder, then in another file collects those cells into a 100-cell (or something) grid
- other procedurally generated content
- a hamfisted extremely basic raycasting proof of concept using the 2D drawing functions of GML (extremely slow)
- art assets you can use
- tile based collision detection (vs. object-and-sprite based collision detection that you'd normally use)
there's a readme file with a couple of other things in there as well.

Need an opinion on a system for a standard RTS attacking mechanic.

I'm trying to implement a War3/Dota style Orb/UAM/On hit effect when a projectile collides with a target though I can't seem to come to a good conclusion for how to implement it for a networked game.

Right now what I've got are functions within the base unit class to handle each individual on hit effect's debuff though I feel like this is silly as it leaves me with a giant if-else or switch-case tree.

Since the game is multiplayer I'm limiting myself to 32 debuffs by using an int as a bit array (so like a value of 7 is 0b111 which the code would read as the first 3 debuffs being active simultaneously on the object).

I'm wondering if there's a way to avoid the if-else or switch-case tree entirely or optionally pull the on hit debuffs from another class entirely.

Like what I've got now for example just seems colossally retarded even though it works.

networking arrays is a huge pain in the ass though since they need to be encoded on the sending side and decoded on the receiving side, I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible for network traffic by sticking to int/float/string which are handled automatically by the built-in API.

What I'm more interested in though at the moment is not the 32 debuff limitation but how to not have a 32-element switch-case or if-else tree in my base unit class.

I might be able to get away with creating an OnHitEffect class and just having a bunch of inheriting classes for each effect which I create prefabs for and instantiate as needed.

Yeah this seems less retarded as I can just override the base ApplyHitEffect function from the parent in each inheriting class with whatever that specific hit effect is supposed to do.

The character controller component is something that lets you do movement without rigidbodies that automatically handles sweeping movement against geometry, you still need to implement your own actual controller on top of it.

I wish coding had some sort of autocorrect feature, or recommendation, or something. So if I want to do something like "left click enables the swing sword animation and if it connects it deals damage" and it would help me out.

Considering my five year old is breezing through kiddie coding games, this is a far less inflammatory statement than it seems.

This is only if you are using dragndrop though. GML actually requires some work to learn if you have absolutely zero coding experience.

It's pretty easy to pick up but not RPGMaker Ruby-lite easy. So it's not quite retarded kid level.

What do you guys use to make sprites? Will ___Paint___ suffice?
>>
>>128545064
You don't have to.
There are a bunch of ways to do grounded check, so i'll try to elaborate according to what i've used so far. I bet there are better ways though:

raycast: You place a null at the bottom of your character and you fire continuous raycasts. If it's within [arbitrary value], then your character is grounded, and you can jump.
This method has some caveats, but it kind of depends on your level. You may want to set up a debug to show raycast length, so if your character gets stuck somewhere without being able to jump then you can check that debug length and adjust your [arbitrary value].
You can even cast like 4 rays off-center from your character if one ray doesn't prove enough.

collision check: You can check if your character is in collision with something, using things like "oncollisionstay".
There are multiple ways to handle it, but at it's simplest form you just set grounded to true if your body is in collision.
This won't work well by default, but it's a good start. It won't work because you will be in collision with walls as well, so you could climb walls with this implementation.
You can do multiple things to fix this.
You can tag walkable terrain as "ground" or something, and only set grounded if you are in collision with that.
You could also check the normals of that surface, so if they're within ~15 degrees of the "world up", then you could consider them ground.

You can also combine the two methods to some extent, it's really up to you.
>>
How do you guys do animated backgrounds? I'd like to have it in my game.

Asprite or Photoshop

In photoshop, use the pencil tool and layers.
Open the canvas navigator on the side so you can see your sprite at a realistic size as you draw.

Asprite and other specific spriting programs let you edit a frame while the animation plays. This saves a lot of time.

The same reason no one makes a game about women. People whine on Twitter all day about the inclusion of minorities and underrepresented groups, but what happens when a game dev actually takes that risk?

Those same people turn around and endlessly criticize how "X portrayal is wrong," "Y portrayal is insensitive and inaccurate," etc. etc.

It's a losing fight. You're better off chasing an audience that doesn't have a perennial cactus up its ass.

The GML documentation has very little information on arrays.

I want to make a simple level builder with nested "for"s for my x and y coordinates, and then import the level data from a script.

I can't find a way to assign values to variables in the form of array = {0,0,0,0...}, only array[0] = 1, array[1] = 0, etc. I don't want to just initialize it, I need different numbers on each variable, so I can't make a straight loop.

Surely there is a way to do it right? it's such a basic fucking piece of functionality.

I started a new project.

I'll be able to reuse a heap of assets though and there's no open-ness to the concept, you'll fly straight from station to station for trading and you'll never leave your ship. No combat, no exploration. Just trading and ship management, and waiting.

Lets see how long this one last.

Never used GML but saw that it seems you can set arrays from strings, so couldn't you make levels using those instead? So your example would be

level_data = "0000000000
0000000000
000"

Would make it easier to load from files too, just slurp the content of the file into an array and you're done.
>>
>>128555626
Maybe do something like

i = 0

array[i] = (value)
i++

Hey enginedevs, what part of 3d graphics is computed by the CPU and what part by the GPU?
In the animation of 3d models for example, does the CPU or GPU compute the new vertex positions?

Making a non-networked game is kind of trivial desu, as long as you aren't trying to make anything too crazy. Being an artist is not entirely single-faceted though, as you need a bunch of different skillsets.

the issue too is the amount of programming skill you need to make games is fairly trivial

It takes just as long to get "good" at programming and math as it does to get "good" at art but for 90% of games that are made here theres absolutely no reason to get that good, unless you're a programmer for other purposes too.

I'm not willing to buy wacom because they're shitheads.

I got a free ipad a while back and i decided to buy a wacom pen for it. It cost about 100-150$ and it was absolutely fuckin' useless, barely any apps supported it properly, the accuracy went like 1cm off the tip if it was off-center from the screen.

The pen essentially looks the exact same way as the pen you get with better wacom tablets, i asked if the ipad pen was compatible with the wacom tablets, they said no.

Being a good artist is definitely related to your personality though. Some people just don't have very vivid imaginations and visual senses to be able to put down anything they think of on paper. Sure it takes a lot of effort to improve as an artist, but there's no doubt someone can be born with a head start.

As a programmer, I know anyone can pick up Unity or UE4 in less than 7 days if they actually applied themselves. A beginner artist would still be struggling with Loomis faces in 7 days.

same thing with art, there are plenty of good 2D artists that make quality sculpts without training because they have "touch" for it

>>128564352
I don't know man, it really depends on what you want to be your end style. You can look into sculpting or you can do low poly like you are now. I'm not sure about your base mesh, but a lot of lowpoly is about texturing.

no, what i did was this. i looked for people who got the most commissions and followers, or posted works from other good artists and i contacted them. i told them i would make some fan art for them for nothing because i liked the stuff they were uploading. at this point, my art was pretty good quality. they agreed, because they have nothing to lose. it was basically a gamble, but some of them ended up posting my artwork along with the others. i got massive exposure doing this in very little time.

3d human modeling is definitely a tough subject, it builds upon other skillsets, like being able to draw a human on paper, knowing some anatomy etc.

i did that shit too. i was stuck for the longest time. then i changed the way i learned. i suck with lines, and i always have. constructing things with lines has never worked for me, and because pretty much any book on drawing teaches you to learn by constructing your drawings with lines and shapes made of lines, i was stuck for years. when i changed the way i drew, i improved at an amazing rate, at least for me anyway. i'm better at thinking in forms, not with lines. so i do good with sculpting out of forms basically. when i started drawing with shapes and silhouettes, by using larger brushes and then simplifying the drawings after i had the right proportions and shape for everything down, i found that i could make things the way i wanted. if something isn't working, and you're truly trying, think outside the box and find a new method of learning. maybe it really can't work for you, but i don't believe it. anyone who can make shapes and learn which shapes to use to make proper anatomy of whatever they are drawing, and learns the bases of all artwork such as perspective and values, they will improve, period. if they don't, they are holding themselves back on purpose.

Sure, I already tried to add some clothes and all but it all turned out too constant and too generic with no shadows whatsoever. Not to mention that I suspect my steam lines are not where they should be.

ive been programming seriously for 7 years and i cant pick up an engine and learn it in a few hours, let alone be as productive iwth it as with what i used right now. lots of people learn slower or faster depending on how their brain is wired. denying this is foolish

I am a pro programmer and engines slow me down too, Its a different skillset than programming in my opinion, the UI and workflow of a designed engine isnt neccessarily easier to trudge through just cause you know how to program, just the programming part is.

around 3 years of serious drawing. if you don't count the tracing or doodling i did as a kid. a lot of that time was spent learning how to learn properly if that makes any sense. i also put a lot of time into it. not learning as a hobby kinda time, learning to do it as a professional, because i had a passion for it and wanted to do it for a living. if you learn properly, and study wisely, you can do it in much less time. you can draw for 10 or 20 years and if you don't draw to learn, or learn effectively, you can still be at a child's proficiency. i've seen it many times. true artists never stop improving, they die of old age as amazing artists still in the process of improving.

Already doing that, but it returns some massive numbers (GetInverse just calls glm::inverse() on the matrix).

glm::vec3 View::ToWorld(const glm::vec3 &p) const
{
return (GetInverse() * glm::vec4(p, 1)).xyz();
}

>have been drawing for 2 years now, still can't get basic anatomy right.

Play around more, don't try to draw the same thing constantly. find reference pictures and decide you're going to draw a hand in this and that pose and try it.

Ask for advice and people will tell you grind art like it's a fucking MMO, it's not, play around and change things up. Try block shading and hardbrushes. Try to draw faces that take up the whole paper. Put on a phone timer on 30 minutes and draw something from start to finish in that time. Skip lineart and just colour.

Somewhere along the line you'll pick up something that clicks better with you.

also to add to the art thing, don't learn or draw if you're overly distracted. use music if you need to and set the mood. i find that i can focus and draw my best at night when i am relaxed and not hyper bouncing off the walls.

>>
>>128570320
>tablet?
Learn to configure it properly. The default everywhere is opacity on pressure but it's a shit setting for lineart.

Tablets are somewhat overhyped. It's comfrotable to draw with a pen grip but that's about it.
>>
>>128570823
Overhyped? How else do you do digital art? Am i misusing terms?

>I only use nails and wood
>steel is a meme, give it 5 years
>>
>>128571128
If everyone insisted you needed to weld EVERYTHING EVER whenever working with metal, yeah, I'd call that overhyped too.

In fact, tablets are like Arduinos are to electrical hobbyists. Useful, but way overhyped and not necessary for most people. They're also not as useful for learning as you'd think.

How else do you draw on the computer? With your mouse?

Yes, it's not particularly hard and it forces good habits like good line quality because you can't sketch and chickenscratch with a mouse, which you can and would do with a tablet.
