I tend to think that 3 should stay holed up in the (properly fortified) room while 2 roam/set up watch at key areas outside of the room, be it a key stair well, ceiling breach spot, etc. The roamers slowly work their way back towards the room as the attackers do the same, always looking for flanking opportunity.

Defense strategy is also dependent on operator selection though.

Well there's a big difference in gameplay considering the destructible environment. A good tip would to be always aware of your surroundings. What can and can't be destroyed. You can use so many things to your advantage.
One thing I like to do if breach through floors going to the floor below, and sneak back up the stairs to get behind enemies. Also on defense check cameras when you have time to, on offense make sure you take out cameras

Only reason triangle trumps red dot is because the sight is centered on the tip of the triangle, instead of in the middle of a blob. Gives you an actual point to work with instead of a "dot" that usually covers their whole head. Holo is technically the most precise, but it's ugly and gets in the way. Acog is the absolute best once you get used to it. If triangle still seems like shit try doing a couple Thunts by yourself with the Acog to get the hang of it. Headshots start pouring in once you get used to the zoom.

Currently my favorite defender. Great weapons and speed for roaming, but his gadget isn't so great since it's basically useless on the hostage game mode when no one either picks Fuze or uses it on the objective room. Smart Thatchers also throw their EMPs on the wall outside the rooms with gadgets in them to avoid his ADS.

Also, does anyone think lurking next to a trapdoor that isn't reinforced in the room above the objective is a good idea? I've been doing that lately to fairly good results, but I'm only in silver

Not until they actually fix the matchmaking so that you can't get matched against premades if you're only solo queue.

It should be like League of Legends where 1-2 person premades will get in the solo queue, but anything more is a separate ranking system.
