was Mistle really into her, or was she just taken advantage of younger, hotter girl?

Geralt should be able to romance Ciri, they are not related by blood and that is the only thing that matters, she would clearly spread her legs for him, and is much better than any filthy sorceress.

This game should be about player choice, so you purists out there wouldn't be forced to do it anyway, it makes much more sense for them to be together, there is clearly attraction between them. Plus we should have more fuckable females, Tomira and Rosa van Attre are missed opportunities, also a bangable succubus, Cerys and much more...

>>
>>128468262
This tbqh. There's also one thing the bookfags never mention: Ciri was jealous of Yennefer in the books because she stole Geralt away from her. She obviously lusted after that witcher dick, it's just that as a cuck Geralt never took advantage of that. The game really should have fixed that imho.
>>
>>128468353
>Fuck off faggot
You fuck off purist with your pathetic moral values, no blood relation, no incest, it's simple. Ciri is grown up now, she and Geralt haven't seen each other in a while and they haven't spent that much time together anyway, so it wouldn't be strange at all if they are attracted to each other.
>>
How tall is Ciri?
>>
>>128468586
You are sick
>>
Geralt should remain a lone witcher, my Geralt banged Keira before killing her, lied to that whore Triss that he loved her before banging her, did the same with that bitch Yennefer, the only thing missing is a revenge mission for that threesome shit they pull of. I also banged all the hookers, Sasha, Yuta, Shani and I want more whores in the next expansion. It should at least have 3-5 bangable options to make up for the lackluster main game.

As long as they are not related by blood, they could bang if they both wanted. There is nothing wrong with that, and many people had done that throughout history. It is obvious that Ciri wants Geralt, and I doubt he would say no, so yes there should be an option for that romance. If you don't like that you simply wouldn't choose it.

I don't care for objective morality much, so your purist view don't bother me. Like I said, if you don't like it, then don't choose it. In a game heavily based on player choice, romancing Ciri should be an option, I'm sure many people would choose her over immature Triss and bitchy Yen.

>The ghosts of Rozrog must have had enough affairs previous night, as they showed no signs of life. There was only one exception, in the form of skeleton wearing remainings of a shroud, who suddenly appeared behind Agloval, Mousehunt and Freixenet's backs. The prince, baron and druid however were so deeply absorbed by a discussion about politics, that they didn't even notice the spectre. Skeleton got very upset by this lack of attention, moved around the table and snapped its teeth at Triss Merigold. The sorceress, snuggled tenderly against the arm of Eskel from Kaer Morhen, raised her graceful hand and snapped her fingers. The dogs took care of the bones.

The whole TW3 was disappointing in the sex area, they said 16 hours of sex motion capture was made, I ask where the hell is it? Rehashed scenes, shaved pussies(really in 13th fucking century), less explicit, angles that hide the action, they censured their game not to upset uptight purists and feminists, they falsely advertised it. I thought it was a game for mature crowd and I get this, shame on you CDPR.

Geralt and Ciri make an excellent couple, they have more in common than Geralt and the filthy sorceress's. Ciri is young but mature enough, and Geralt has also been with Shani who is was younger than Ciri at that time. Geralt could teach her about love and sex and they could be witchers together killing monster all over the world.

I disagree, Ciri clearly has a thing for Geralt, and what he does should be up to the player, so their romance makes perfect sense, she is not his real daughter anyway.

Not really, no. Makes for a shitty story if the player decides Geralt should marry Roche and become Queen of Temeria, for instance.

>so their romance makes perfect sense, she is not his real daughter anyway.
That's not how normal human psychology works.
>>
>>128483751
Might be but im not so sure since its so far behind the front for the scoiatel... then again he didn't really care too much for nilfgaard hence why he was helping saskia. Anyway its just a placeholder that showed up for a few people after the patch its not official so we'll see.
>>
>>128484076
>She doesn't have a thing for him anymore than any other daughters that love their fathers have for them.
She definitely does, the ways she looks and hugs him goes beyond the love for her father.

>Not really, no. Makes for a shitty story if the player decides Geralt should marry Roche and become Queen of Temeria, for instance.
No it doesn't, and your example is extreme, Geralt and Ciri being together is completely plausible.

>That's not how normal human psychology works.
It's not like they spend their life together, they were separated most of the time, Geralt was more of a mentor than a father to her, and it is normal for her to feel attracted to him now that she is grown up.
>>
>>128484241
>Might be but im not so sure since its so far behind the front for the scoiatel
The Scoia'tael don't have a front, they're guerrillas.

>Anyway its just a placeholder that showed up for a few people after the patch its not official so we'll see.
They don't make things like that for no reason. It may be scrapped and never revisited, but it was intended at some point.

>Don't they usually fight the northern kingdoms?
Yes but things have changed a lot since the Second Northern War. They don't serve Nilfgaard anymore, at least not intentionally. Now they're more fighting for survival or revenge than any hope of victory. And even with that wasn't the case, small mobile commandos often went very roundabout routes in the fight out of necessity.

>Wouldn't they be further north messing with their supply lines?
Maybe they're messing with Nilfgaard's supply lines? Iorveth hates them, Saskia would not want their victory.
>>
>>128484847
>Tell me about your homelife. What was your relationship with your parents like?
I killed my father and fucked my mother, but that's irrelevant.

You are clearly limited in your perception, your puritan morals are holding you back, Geralt and Ciri are not a classic family in any sense, they spend maybe a few months together, and Ciri is 23 or something, them being a couple is completely plausible and should have been included in the game. I am sure more people would choose Ciri over Y/T, if only they've been given a choice.

Yeah, resort to that, since you can't present any real arguments for your case other than, he is her father, that's bad. Fact is Geralt ISN'T her biological father and he didn't spend that much time with her. Ciri sees him as a man, not a father, she never calls him dad or something, their relationship can easily turn into romance, and you wouldn't be forced to choose that if you are so against it, but many people would love that.

Mage: Philippa, arguably one of the best and most versatile mages, also can turn into a owl and provide air support

Ranger: Milva, OP archer

Healer: Triss, great healer and good with defensive spells, not much of a fighter so she would stay behind the front line

Fighter: Saskia, thanks to her dragon's blood she is far stronger and has better endurance than any men, plus in case of desperate situation she can turn into the dragon and nuke everyone

Rogue/Spy: Dandelion, he must've picked some locking skills. Also could do the talking or scouting since no one suspects him of anything.

There's no time/setting limit, and given Milva is dead in the games lore, I placed it right before the games. As we have seen in TW2, Saskia and Phil are in good terms as long as their aims are similar. Also, one conversation with Saskia strongly suggests our dragon lady knows how cunning Phil is, so she's not that naive, either. As for Milva, she would enjoy a good banter with Phili but Saskia + Triss + Dandelion would provide the necessary stability and fun while Sigi keeps everyone in check.

According to CD PROJEKT, Blood and Wine will be better than the main game.

Szamalek points out the Wild Hunt's lack of a charismatic enemy, saying they've made a unique and memorable opponent for Blood and Wine. He also mentions that they've created a complex story that they believe players will appreciate.

Any idea who the main villain would be?

Pretty much just the witcher armor ones. The day regen one is a trap choice, it's an insignificant amount of regen.

Good but not OP good. It's situational, like all the non-Quen signs. Hybridizing too much is kind of penalized right now, although that's obviated on NG+ or as the expansions allow for more levels and talent points. But a bit of hybridizing is fine.

He doesn't care about power and influence. He likes souls to torment, and games to stave off boredom. Besides, we don't exactly know the extent of his power and influence. He provided several strange and powerful demons to the Olgierd Estate on a whim, to act as a gardener and pets.

I assumed he was a Cthulhu type alien god. Not really going to argue with you since its a pointless venture. I just think three very powerful witches and a dark lord with his spectral army could probably beat him. O'Dimm uses different methods to beat you. I dont see them fighting anyways.

That raises a ton of questions that the Witcher universe will likely never get to, and in a way that makes the setting worse. Nah. When the honeymoon feelings wore off she'd end up boring him. They'd probably fight a lot too. Their world views and priorities are really incompatible. Geralt is a cynical individualist, Triss is an optimistic populist. Geralt rebels, Triss conforms. Triss dreams, Geralt condemns. Plus they have few common interests. In loose terms, yes, I agree. I thought you meant it literally though. I've seen a lot of people mean it that way so it's hard to tell. Though to be fair, Lucifer kind of adopted the folklore characteristics of a common archetype that predated him, in the form we see making deals at midnight at crossroads.

The only question I have is, if Nilfgaard takes over Redania and Novigrad, will the persecution of mages and non-humans at least get somewhat better. The Nilfgaardians seem to be all about progress and civilization, so you'd think they'd put a rein on the Eternal Fire cult.

Not to mention that the way the all the other city states look at Velen as a hellish backwater are completely justified given the way they worship a bunch of monsters straight out of The Wicker Man.

Mages, somewhat. Though they'll basically all be highly monitored and expected to be state servants. They won't be summarily executed simply for being mages, but try to do anything on their own initiative and they may end up being drawn and quartered. Nonhumans could go either way.

Oh he was bringing civilization and progress by purging society of parasites and subversive elements like mages and scoia'tael (all nonhuman are scoia'tael collaborators) against the brutal unfeeling hordes of the south (who are themselves a race of elves).

Nilfgaard is bringing society and progress by putting mages and nonhuman in their place, establishing order, taking the governments of the unwashed barbarian Nordlings from their incapable hands, and destroying their barbaric superstitious religions (which is most of them). And by tightly controlling trade and industry, of course.

>destroying their barbaric superstitious religions

After some of the shit I saw in Velen and Skellige, I kind of agree---and this is coming from an actual religious person, no a fedora tipper.

The Velen worship of the crones is basically all about human sacrifice---what do they think happens to the war orphans they send on the trail of treats? Let them fend for themselves if you don't want to take care of them, don't send them to be eaten by witches.

Even the Skellige religion that has a lot more going for it (even the thing with Skall was a misunderstanding and they probably changed it after) is pretty messed up when you consider they let Bran's daughter burn herself to death---I don't care what they're traditions are, someone should have stopped her.

Then there's all the excesses of the Eternal Fire cult that just killed everyone who didn't fit their code rather than just expelling them if they didn't like them.

They have many, many more religious cults than those. This is a thoroughly pagan society Nilfgaardian soldiers attacked even temples of Melitele, a entirely peaceful fertility cult that provides healers and midwives.

Skellige is basically its own thing with little ties to the north or south on the continent.

The Eternal Fire cult is a relatively new phenomenon and the war is fueling its reactionary rhetoric. Plus Nilfgaard encouraged these purges and gave Radovid the excuse he needed to cause chaos and internal divisions, as well as to rob the North of its mages. So they share a great deal of the responsibility.

That part of Velen is weird and all the outsiders fear or scoff at their beliefs.

>one of the recent cash-ins?
Road Without Return appeared in "Something Ends, Something Begins" novel of short stories, which came out before he wrote the actual Saga.

Sorceresses can't have children in general, so I think he indended her to be a druid or something like that from the very beginning.
>>
>>128532025
>he Witcher world is equivalent of what, 14th or 15th century Europe?
More or less, just without a lot of gunpowder.

>Why are they more backwards than the late medieval period?
In some ways they're much more advanced. Their knowledge of biology is far in excess of anything humans in the real world had until the 20th century. But the answer is because the civilization you see in the Witcher world is post-apocalyptic, founded by a bunch of refugee human colonists after the Conjunction of the Spheres.

>>128532076

Something big happened between Act 2 and Act 3 that was never shown. It's probably cut content. I really hope an Enhanced Edition comes out at some point.

Sapkowski has said the books are entirely their own thing---that is, he doesn't view their adaptation of his work as valid in the first place. I think this is a good thing, as they're free to use or discard anything in the books as suits them (including not killing other Witchers).

Which is why the games aren't canon to the books. The books are still canon to the games, for the most part.

>as they're free to use or discard anything in the books as suits them (including not killing other Witchers).

But the answer is because the civilization you see in the Witcher world is post-apocalyptic, founded by a bunch of refugee human colonists after the Conjunction of the Spheres.

I should have clarify I meant the sociological/cultural progress. You are right, their knowledge of genetics, biology and medicine is pretty advanced for a quasi-medieval society but this type of information is reserved sorely for mages. Well in game you go around a lot of stuff that book witcher would never normaly have done. One of that is killing the dragon as well. But to make game more nonlinear you have a choice either to go the way of a true bookish Geralt-witcher or try to do your own Geralt. That's about that.

Nevertheless, I think the games should be viewed as at least a different timeline. The author has already made his contempt for it clear, so they shouldn't feel beholden to him (and from what I understand, they aren't---for example, Avallac'h characterization is supposed to be quite different, as is the Eredin's motivation for kidnapping Ciri being to save his world rather than just use the power for his own evil ends, whatever they might be---though admittedly, I haven't read the books, so this is only what I've heard about the differences from those who have.)

Interesting question. What I found most puzzling is how Nimue's society does not differ in anything contrary to Geralt's, even though they are like, centuries apart?

I guess the world is frozen in perpetual late medieval setting, just like ASOIAF.
>>

Yeah with fantasy it's usually the opposite. hyper detailed, spergy world building; shit themes and characters. The Witcher is like bizarro-fantasy. Which is funny given how fantasy kitchen sink and reliant on folklore the setting is.

Feudalism is a lot better than what preceded it.

Nevertheless, I have no desire to debate the relative merits of Medieval society to classical or Renaissance society on a video game forum

Except mages are pretty costly, and as all living weapons, depend on physiological causes , meanwhile when invented and if common, gunpowder and guns should be cheaper to make and easier to use in combat.

They usually do a pretty good job of making it so Geralt could feasibly go either way. Sometimes they fail spectacularly, but usually it's at least believable.

>>128532525
>Nevertheless, I think the games should be viewed as at least a different timeline.
They are, since Sapkowski has already written stuff set later than them that conflicts with the game narrative.

>The author has already made his contempt for it clear,
Contempt is too strong a word. He praised them actually, it's just a combination of "I am the only one that can truly write Witcher stories" and "I am a 60 year old Polish guy and videogames are strange and new".

> so they shouldn't feel beholden to him
They're beholden to him entirely voluntarily. They like his work and seek to emulate its tone and content for the most part.

>and from what I understand, they aren't
They're a pretty faithful adaptaton mostly. There's few big changes, despite what some nitpicky purist spergs like to whine about.

> Avallac'h characterization is supposed to be quite different,
Not at all really. He's always been a subtle shake your hand while stabbing your back type.

>as is the Eredin's motivation for kidnapping Ciri being to save his world rather than just use the power for his own evil ends,
In the games its both, in the books its just the latter. The games accelerate the White Frost timeline and that's pretty much the biggest change. He's still an entirely self-interested asshole either way.

>though admittedly, I haven't read the books, so this is only what I've heard about the differences from those who have.)
They get exaggerated a lot. Purist fans do this with every adaptation. Also read the books faggot.

Yup, I don't know if we should praise Sapkowski for that or complain he's not ambitious enough to combat his flaws and polish his magnum opus.

>The middle ages were pretty shit. Feudalism/manorialism is a retarded social system except during societal collapses, and it never goes away easily when it's no longer needed.

Too bad there are few if any fantasy books set in post-ancient regime societies. Unless you count steampunk set in Victorian times as fantasy.

>>
>>128532576
>Yeah with fantasy it's usually the opposite. hyper detailed, spergy world building; shit themes and characters

This is why Sapkowski and Pratchett are my favorite fantasy authors. They both care about good story more than world building, and the fact that they are both auto-ironic, make fun of tropes appearing in other fantasy settings, and stories don't take themselves too seriously.

They both didn't even bother with making a map of their universum until fans asked them badly.
>>
>>128532812
>Too bad there are few if any fantasy books set in post-ancient regime societies.
My favorite fantasy series is set in a quasi-antiquity or classical type culture.

>>128532831
Yes, that does, very rarely, happen. Never for male mages, but it has been recorded for sorceresses a handful of times.

>Isn't Geralt's mother one of these rare cases?
It's strongly implied in the saga and Sword of Destiny to the extent that it's all but stated.
>>
>>128532839

>You don't need gunpowder when you can have hell on earth and acid rain just snapping your fingers.

Except in the books mages have to take time to cast spells. And it's pretty exhausting to use magic for a long period of time. Mages in the games are pretty OP, yet they die like rabbits. Ironic.

>The things Sapkowski excels at are, I think, more important than some Robert Jordanesque exhaustive treatises on the physics of a magic system, for example.

I agree, but i's glaring that the world he envisioned in short stories is different to the one depicted in Saga.

I really like crazy detailed worldbuilding but it's no substitute for writing chops. I'll sperg like crazy over muh Morrowind lore but a novel by Michael Kirkbride would probably be unadulterated shit. There's authors that can do both, but they are very rare.

Yes and no. Most of them trigger fast once you've already drawn on the Power. It's the drawing bit that's rough. They'd have the prep time to turn into artillery before any set piece battle, easily. Conventional artillery meanwhile also requires time to set up and is meant for set piece battles, so really not seeing the need.

>I agree, but i's glaring that the world he envisioned in short stories is different to the one depicted in Saga.
Yeah it's really blatant. Which makes the angry complaints about inconsistencies between the books and the games kind of funny. The books aren't even consistent with themselves.

How many mages do serve in armies, though? We know pre-Thanedd there are 1-2 in each court, usually as advisers, healers or tutors. We know 20 of them fight at Sodden, but it was a deciding, a matter-of-survival battle to end the world. Are we certain they would be utilized in petty wars and regular combat?

>Yeah it's really blatant. Which makes the angry complaints about inconsistencies between the books and the games kind of funny. The books aren't even consistent with themselves.

People should just accept them as kind of alternative, differently numbered Earths are in DC or Marvel universes. This is why I am amused by how many people insist Ciri ends up with Voorhan Morvis, as he is said to be the next Emperor after Emhyr, where in reality everything can happens in the games lore, including Ciri reigning with a completely different guy. Speaking of, Voorhan died like 10 years after he became an emperor, meaning Ciris' reign would've been short as well.
>>
>>128533570
>Are we certain they would be utilized in petty wars and regular combat?
In numbers, probably just in major wars. Which the North had few of, before Nilfgaard. That's also the case with expensive early canon, too. One or two personal mages may intervene in smaller wars, though I imagine the Council and Conclave did their best to prevent that. Once it collapses, you see stuff like Vergen.

> This is why I am amused by how many people insist Ciri ends up with Voorhan Morvis, as he is said to be the next Emperor after Emhyr,
I don't get this. He can be the next Emperor without marrying Ciri. That was Emhyr's condition, not his. Plus the books basically end with Witcheress Ciri. The logic isn't internally consistent.
>>
>>128533049

Surprisingly, this is what actually made Tolkien so well known. Most of the world-building stuff exists only in material published after his death like the Silmarilion or the Appendices.

And if you don't believe me, re-read the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (okay, you can skip through like half of Fellowship where they're just going through the forest). W.H. Auden wouldn't have praised these books the way he did if they didn't have well developed, interesting characters. I think, and I admit its just an opinion, this is why Tolkien will always be the gold standard by which all fantasy books high or low define themselves, either in embracing it or "deconstructing" it like The Witcher or the Game of Thrones books.
>>
>>128533791
I wouldn't call Tolkien's characters particularly complex, though it still beats most fantasy. He has damn good prose though and knew how to tell a story. That said, the sooner fantasy finishes dumping their obsession with cargo-cult versions of LOTR that miss everything that made it work, the better. It's almost done now, but man it was bad in the 90's.
>>
>>128533872

They aren't complex, but they feel like real people (in his novels). The complex characters in the Silmarilion are all presented at a large distance, because its written like a history, not a prose account.

And the North in general yes. The war was part of that though. She wanted to be where Vilgefortz was after Sodden. To do that, she has to author a great victory against Nilfgaard. Vizimir wanted to avoid the war, and had already persuaded Foltest to leave off. The whole plan was about to collapse. So she killed him.

The magic is not consistent despite Sapkowski's wish to present it like some sort of science, craft, or art, per Yennefer's quote. Take for example Tissaia who instantly defuses the magical shield in Thanedd who took years of time to be created by dozen of mages.

>Due to that book-mages aren't built for battle at all. That's why a lot of them died during the first war with Nilfgaard.

Yeah, most of them are more interested in conducting experiments, political schemes, or attending parties. No wonder ex-soldier Vilgefortz become their leader so quickly.

moar from tv tropes

>Roche gets one in the Reasons of State quest. After you slay Radovid, he reveals he's part of a secret treaty to surrender Temeria to the Nilfgaard Empire in order to have peace—leaving Aedirn and Lyria to their conquest as well. Dikjstra promptly arrives, quoting the Witcher equivalent of Hamlet, and orders him (and Thaler and Ves) killed because he intends to ascend to the Redanian throne and continue the war. Geralt can leave them to their fate or kill Dijsktra to protect them. The decision has been hotly debated with some believing Geralt would never abandon a friend, while others think Roche's actions are a betrayal of The Quisling proportions, which the Witcher would never abide.
>Geralt, of all people, gets one from fans in Reasons of State for his uncharacteristic choice of leaving Roche to die if he chooses that option. Since Geralt is not a blank slate, that means it's in character for him to choose to do so. Is it because fans are meta-gaming, because he wants to preserve his neutrality, because it's not his fight, because he hates Nilfgaard, or because of other reasons? Fans have debated many reasons why Geralt would do such and come up with numerous answers.

Fair argument for once.

Actually, The Road With No Return was written in 1988, before the first short stories novel appeared, and originally wasn't supposed to be a part of Witcher cycle. Hence the inconsistencies.

Vrans, introduced, The Road don't appear in any of the Witcher books, for example.

>but you don't claim that CDPR would something as dull as GOOD / BAD choice, do you?
It's a bit more complicated than that, but only a bit. The point system is meant to represent your overall parenting, but when you know the simplistic math of it, it starts looking really binary. The real reason you can get some "wrong" is because you're only a completely crap parent if you're arbitrary, unsupportive, and controlling, which requires three or more strikes.

So an emotionally stunted Geralt that sucks at comforting people (which is canon except where Ciri is concerned in the books at least, because for some reason he's the world's best dad from Brokilon on) can do the "bad" choice at Kaer Morhen, but if he still gives her confidence with Philippa and lets her vent her anger or grief, he's not a bad parent, for example. Similarly, one that's a bit cautious bordering on overprotective when it comes to Philippa might accompany her to the meeting, but still be good at bringing her up when it feels down. So she still survives.

>The dude doesn't want to sell to elves and freaks. Of course he could have gotten dandelion to do it or something, but they're in a hurry and there's only so many options they have the time and money to script.

It was a stupid quest in the first place with no real consequences whatsoever. Even if you disagree and Ciri's pissed of for no reason, nothing happens. You still get to beat that elf, but who cares?

>It's one of the least dangerous capers Geralt or Ciri ever pulled.

Maybe, but it's reckless and stupid for someone like Ciri who should stay out of spotlight and Geralt who is one guard's reprimand away from being burnt at stake.

Wonder why games never touched upon Ciri being a reckless, bloodthirsty bandit. It seems more like a wink to fans than loudly saying, 'you know, Ciri used to be a criminal'.

>She went to a place to repay someone that helped her out when she was struggling and her dad hauled off and punched him

Them helping her in dire situation do not make them immune to criticism. Geralt has every right to call them on their stupid actions that could cost his daughter's safety.

She's not in it all that much. It's touched on a bit there, and with Whoreson Jr. But I'd have liked more. They were probably afraid of turning off newfags from her character. After what happened with Yennefer, they may even have been right.

>Geralt has every right to call them on their stupid actions that could cost his daughter's safety.

When she goes to revisit him in Novigrad. She gets pretty vicious with the guards. Something like "I'll cut you up so bad even the girls at Crippled Kate's won't have you." And she clearly enjoys the fight. She still has the bloodthirst.

>I'd rather have Geralt tell her how foolish and childish is to romanticize the life of a circus performer.
I'd have liked that option too, though I can understand why she feels the way she does. She's not looking at it objectively though. I mean right at that moment they're in a horrible situation.

It makes more sense when you realize she's already decided to do the White Frost thing by that point, so is pondering her immanent death.

Philippa's not suicidal to attempt to mindfuck Ciri. She's not in position of power compared to how it went down with Saskia.

>Geralt was being a huge dick and he's in a life or death situation. He got worked up. I don't blame him. You saw the charred corpses, didn't you?

He got his ass handed to him. He should either try to persuade Ciri on her own or ignore Geralt knowing he won't be reasoned with.

This is how I interpreted it as well. Makes sense, and Ciri's in her early 20s, of course she would romanticize the life of free men (according to her).

>either in embracing it or "deconstructing" it like The Witcher or the Game of Thrones books
Comparing Sapkowski to Martin is really harmful. They are on a whole different level.

The entire "deconstruction" by Martin revolves around putting as many swear words and violence into his work to make it look "gritty" and "realistic". There is no nicety, no humor, no play with the reader. This is why - as I said - I find Sapkowski much more similar to Pratchett, and they are both my favorite fantasy authors.

While I agree they're not that similar except on a superficial level I think you're doing Martin a disservice. Your criticism applies to the HBO show based on his work though. Martin's deconstruction actually revolves around the complex moral and motives of his primary characters. He also portrays a very shitty medieval world, which was novel in American fantasy at the time. But that amounts to more than swear words and violence. It's systematic, casual oppression of the lower classes and the inherent flaws of the feudal system on display. American fantasy often romanticized it.

Of course by now, that's not very novel, his prose is purely serviceable, he's lost control of the story, and the HBO show has turned into soap opera schlock. So the fantasy nerd love affair with GRRM is fading.

There's this thing that happens when something gets mainstream and popular where it becomes overrated and underrated at the same time. To people with little experience in the genre besides this thing it's the most awesome thing ever. Diehard grognards despise it as pandering entry level trash. Often, neither of these are remotely close to the truth. I've read piss-poor, overrated fantasy. A Song of Ice and Fire is not that.

>He's right though, middle ages were better than antiquity in many ways. It got rid of slavery, in the first place.
Slavery was rampant in the middle ages. Not that that means anything. Some slaves were better off than many serfs. Depends on where and when. A slip of vellum saying "I own you" lying around somewhere doesn't change that this Greek scribe from 20 AD has far better food, housing, medical care, and education than Otto von Bumfuck the Lord High Stableboy Munster. The period after antiquity is characterized by tremendous loss of social organization and economic collapse. It's not better in any way.

Plus, you know, there were slaves in the Middle Ages. Including in Europe.

>And while it is true that in late middle ages the situation of the "lower class" was pretty shit, there was a really high amount of equality in its early stage and up to the XIIth century.
Economic quality is irrelevant in and of itself. People are all poor as crap. Wonderful. If you're talking about legal or political equality? Don't make me laugh. Outside of a few specific areas it's not true at all.

It's not even about the worldbuilding, it's about style of writing.

Martin just... describes the events. Without any literary treatments whatsoever. Also focuses on a lot of negligible aspects like character's clothing, which is just plain boring. I couldn't get past the first part of GoT because this is how painful reading his prose was. 15yo Christopher Paolini made me more invested in his story.

Sapkowski is the exact opposite in terms of writing. He can masterfully mix the substance and fluency of action. When describing characters, he only focuses on their most important, iconic aspects. Geralt has white hair and unpleasant voice. Yennefer has violet eyes and smells like lilac and gooseberries. And that's it. Rest is left to our imagination. And there are jokes and analogies on every page.

>15yo Christopher Paolini made me more invested in his story.

I'm not even saying they're equals as writers. I'm just saying this comes off as ragging on him far more than necessary purely because it's main stream.

>Geralt has white hair and unpleasant voice. Yennefer has violet eyes and smells like lilac and gooseberries. And that's it. Rest is left to our imagination.
Actually in her first appearance Yennefer is explained in excruciating detail but this serves an important purpose in showcasing the disconnect between Geralt's thoughts and his action, describing his instant attraction and fascination for her. It's description, but purely in the service of characterization.

Well that's a total bullshit. Sure there was a time of disturbance during the travels of the tribes, but everything settled down before IXth century.

No, I've meant the law equality. The low class citizen or serf could easily become a steward or even knight if he was enterprising enough. (though again, mind that I'm talking about early middle ages, it all got more complicated after XIIth century).

Actually horses go fast when a war goes hot. The army will be confiscating a ton of them as draft animals, the rich will be buying them up to try to leave the area...the prices will rise very vast and the supply will become very scarce. Those may well have been his only reasonable chance, given he needs to leave ASAP or get Radified.

No, it is rather obvious that Christian states are in the center of attention when discussing Middle Ages, and 99% of Europan states were Christian in the late period. So no, no legal slavery.

>Sure helped a lot during the Hundred Years War
What does Hundred Years War has to do with anything

>"Nuh uh" and pop history
Funnily, it's all your arguments seem to revolve around. And it's the pop historians who follow the "middle ages was backwards and horrible" trope.

>By those standards, so could a slave in Rome or Athens
Not at all, because he was a slave. That's what differs slave and a free person. I mean, sure he could be eventually freed by his master and THEN advance in the social ladder, but freeing didn't depend on his will, did it?

I don't like Yennefer because she is very selfish, she only cares about her own goals. Triss likes helping people.

Jesus Christ, I will make it clear once more.
1. Slavery is prohibited by Christianity. 99% of European states are Christian at that time.
2. In the early middle ages, peasants and craftsmen enjoyed much more rights and law equality than in the late period. So no, no "muh serfs were modern slaves" meme.

Full middle ages: XIIth-XIIIth century

Please don't post until finishing your primary school history lessons.

Also, I show me where have I written that the modern form states existed at the time.

Yennefer is high maintenance, she likes to nag Geralt about smallest things, no wonder he got fed up with her bullshit and escaped from Vengerberg. Even if Geralt ends up with Yen in that cabin, she will drive him crazy and he will eventually escape again. Triss is much better for him.

They are angry at Trissfags because they obsessively like a character they now shouldn't be with Geralt, for some reason they can't accept this. Not only that but CDPR listened to trissfags and added more Triss content and that hurts them even more.

To be fair I don't like most of the added content, but Triss really was very sparse in the last act. I mean if you're gonna do wrong you might as well do it right.

Triss is more beautiful than Yen, she has prettier face, better body, has cute freckles... but that's completely subjective, each person has different tastes. Yen is also beautiful, and so is pretty much any major female character.

Yennefer is not a good person, Geralt deserves better than her.
