Say that to Hotline Miami. You can make amazing looking stuff in Game Maker. A good dev can push its limits.

Oh my god, this is unbearable

I'm an artist first and foremost. Pixel art has an innate appeal because it's made through - and runs on - efficiency. This is assuming the person is good at it, though. Indie shit pixel artists don't give a fuck about creating good art through limitations. If you look at anything the Pixelation / Way of the Pixel gurus do, it's always fairly timeless.

I do pixel art because it's the medium I most enjoy, and I do it at a professionally competent level that is actually focused on the technique involved. Dismissing pixel art as "retro minecraft nonsense" just shows such a lack of understanding about it in general.

And yes, I 3D model as well. Both are excellent graphical mediums. (and yeah, 3D also thrives off of efficiency)

I guess that's true of anything where you get experienced enough and are working in tricky enough things. The GM issues have always seemed slightly more bullshit and less workaroundable to me, but maybe that's personal bias from not having worked in it for so long.

Still, I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anyone starting out. I used to tell people flashpunk but now that flash is dead I just don't know.

Every engine fucks up old code as they make it better over time. The only other solution to that would be shit like Java where a lot of the API is depreciated classes they can't get rid of because programs written decades ago need it.

The reason Game Maker gets shit on because before GM:S it was a toy.

Cosmic Break was primary an arena shooter with lots of players, but it had a persistent lobby, some group pve modes, and later they added raids. Through either pve or pvp players earned mech parts and cash, which could be spent on mech parts or mechs. Players also constructed mechs with those parts. The metagame was pretty deep as the amount of fine tuning mechs could have was a lot.

For money players could buy anime girl mechs. They weren't better, but they looked like anime girls. Players could also throw their life savings into the gacha mechanic and eventually get the super gundam. The super gundam was OP, but I never once saw a single player with it.

The pve had story, but they were episodic and fairly short. There was also a level editor which could be used for private pvp matches.

The game was really popular on /jp/ for a while. That was a lifetime ago.

I mean things are pretty great right now, having both unity and ue4 shoved in our faces for basically nothing is like being some sort of weird harem protagonist. It's fantastic. But I'm not sure I'd feel well recommending either to someone new.

I guess the important thing is just that you start somewhere any keep at it without being afraid to learn new things.
>>
>>128078878
I'm talking about things like the engine throwing random uncatchable exceptions from systems that aren't even being used like the skybox in a game that doesn't use skyboxes. Then you upgrade the engine to a version where that is fixed and suddenly the additive loading is completely broken.
>>
>>128079381
But Stanley Parable is the best walking simulator. Not that that's saying much, but still.

As far as I can tell they do affect you some how but nothing towards being more cognitively performant. Pretty much placebo and if it isn't so close to doing nothing that it doesn't matter.

There is a proven brain drug and that is amphetamines; speed/meth/adderall. It makes you remember more, think faster, more focus, more motivation.
>>
>>128079283
I liked the stanley parable but I felt like there was a lot more they could have done with the idea
>>
>>128079434
That sounds pretty terrible, I'm glad I haven't had those issues. Unity upgrades are definitely iffy though, I appreciate them pushing stuff out before it's super tested but the degree of breaking is maybe a bit much.

Sprite. But the one on the left is cheating a little because I copy/pasted some parts of frames like the connecter at the end of her tail, as well as other body parts like the head or hands. But I had to redraw the lineart for most of where the body connects so some of it is still traditional animation. The coloring is all handpainted from scratch for each frame (I don't recommend doing this, took me like 2 or 3 weeks just to color this idle because I had to go back and repaint so many corrections). Hey, this is by that same guy that wrote the ECS implementation article I've been following. He really thinks there shouldn't be a state stack? I hate this mindset. My problem with Bethesda games is that there is not enough walking. As in everything is so cramped together like an amusement park so no matter what direction you just start walking in you'll immediately run into some kind of ride or attraction. I hate that. I should be walking for hours before I find anything useful. Not every 30 seconds. Maps in Bethesda games are way too small and the content needs to be more spread out. Not every location or vault or cave needs to be easy to find.

Same with Mass Effect games. 1 was perfect where you could ditch the Landmaster and run around on a moon or planet's surface for hours and have no idea where you are. They cut the best part of that game out for filthy casuals who like being rewarded for doing absolutely nothing. Part of the fun was getting lost on alien worlds where stumbling into some hidden base was hard to do. It's like people hate freedom and immersion. wtf modern gamers?

oh, no worries then, you'll learn with time.

you can of course use require() to load stuff from other files (example: make a new file called "utils.lua" with the contents
local util = {}

function util.IsString(a)
return type(a) == "string"
end

return util

then in main.lua just write something like:

oh and by the way, almost every gamedev job in my city is Unity related these days.
>>
>>128087161
Scripting experience may be useless, but it'll still make a game faster than an enginedev. If you actually want to get into the game industry then it would be worthwhile to at learn how to actually program, although some places are starting to use Unity and Unreal themselves.

>>
>>128087285
Unity is a bubble.
It's written on a non-standard, castrated and outdated fork of C# that the developers themselves stopped maintaining a log time ago.
One day the engine will start showing its age and there will be no way to update it due to the inherent flaw of being written on a depreciated language, then Unity will crash and burn.

Dunno about unreal though.

Only hire interns when you need a lot of really basic stuff done. They tend to require a lot of supervision, wasting the time of people who can get more done. One senior developer is worth more than 10 interns.

It would need to go to a different state. The solution isn't technically a stack since you need to insert elements. A concrete example of this: a tutorial state pops up and halfway through the state in the background changes to a different game mode.

>>128090790
>It could be but generally I wouldn't build that into the tutorial directly.
So the tutorial is basically interrupting whatever is going on in the background? You'd have to have some way to say "show tutorial message, then go to battle screen", maybe by using a coroutine or, more generally, passing a continuation to the tutorial message. It's a bit convoluted, but I don't see how it would be any different with an explicit stack.

>Basically something a designer sets up through whatever tools you made for them that would be running in the background and happens to set it to go to the battle state next.
Again, not sure how an explicit stack is supposed to make this easier. The way I envision this working is that there would be a chain of responsibility for handling events, from the top of the stack to the bottom. In my system, that just means calling previous.handle(event); with an explicit stack, you have to have even more external logic.

>Wouldn't you end up with a bunch of extra states being referenced that you will never actually return to or am I reading your method wrong?
No, it's exactly like an intrusive linked list. When a state with a "previous" state is finished, it simply changes to that state by returning it from the update method. Like how removing the first element from a linked list just means redirecting the head to point to the second element.

>So the tutorial is basically interrupting whatever is going on in the background?
My personal experience is that these kind of things happen all the time and designers like it when shit "just works", whether they set up a queue at the very beginning or want to set the battle halfway through. So I've had to be able to support a lot of weird situations.

>It's a bit convoluted, but I don't see how it would be any different with an explicit stack.
With the "stack" you would insert the battle under the tutorial. It doesn't matter when you do it or what state is currently on top as it will only come up when everything over it has cleared. The tutorial does not know the battle exists and the battle does not know the tutorial exists. The system just handles which one has control for them.

>No, it's exactly like an intrusive linked list. When a state with a "previous" state is finished, it simply changes to that state by returning it from the update method. Like how removing the first element from a linked list just means redirecting the head to point to the second element.
So for this example where the intended sequence is: map->tutorial->battle->game would you pass the game state into the battle's constructor? If the state it should go to at the end is not determined until halfway through the battle (maybe based on the result) do you change its previous state to point to the game or are you allocating another map on top of it?

* Game got easier as I got upgrades, rather than finding ways to challenge me now that I had new shit

There's plenty of stuff I'm not mentioning that I enjoyed though, so, yeah. I basically beat it in two sittings.

>>
>>128092267
Okay, I'm starting to understand the situation. The state changes you're trying to do aren't controlled by normal game logic, they're scripted specifically for the tutorial, and the tutorial isn't something that just comes up and interrupts whatever's happening so that the player can read some text.

I admit I wasn't thinking of this kind of situation when I designed the system; it was designed for games with very simple and consistent logic regarding state changes. Though as I think about it, what you're looking for could still be implemented very nicely by writing the state logic using continuation passing style, which is essentially a generalization of the "stack" it is now.

Maybe I'll write a follow-up that talks about that. I like continuations, though implementation details can be hairy...

Step 1 think of the game you've always wanted to make. Now cut the scope of that game in half. Now cut that in half as well. You're now considering making 1/4 of your dream game. Now cut that in half. And cut it in half again. Now you're considering making 1/16th of a "game".
Step 2 throw that out the window because you're never going to make even 1/16th of a game. Ever.

The shape of thing wing is such that as you go forward the air will move slower beneath the wing than over the top. This is caused by the larger distance on the top of the wing (from the convex curve).

So basically the same amount of air is spread over a smaller area (the bottom), and a larger area (the top). The air over the smaller area will therefore be more dense (higher pressure) and the air over the larger area, the top, will be less dense (lower pressure).

The question you want to ask yourself is WHY?.

Speaking of experience, you will learn a lot, but can you REALLY dedicate 4+years to a hobby that doesn't even include the mechanics of what works and what doesn't?

You should stick to a prebuilt engine, run with this idea of a game you have, find out how much work there actually is in design, gameplay and mechnics, then try to make some prototype.

If you need it to run efficient, then make your own engine.

>If you need it to run efficient, then make your own engine.
You can do efficiency in pretty much any engine. For example in Unity if you need to write your own pathfinder you would write it in C++ and create a DLL. I would say doing your own engine is more a matter of flexibility as you are not bound to the limitations of an engine and being able to fix issues yourself without having to do extremely risky engine upgrade.

Visual studio is literally shitting the bed. Sorry. I meant to say the damage part. Let's say I swing a sword in a game. How exactly do developers handle the part where you have to find what enemies you can hit and so on.
>>
>>128097682
Do you mean like hit detection? 3rd person typically tests the enemy's hitboxes against the hurtboxes on the weapons. 1st person typically uses hitscan from the camera for melee weapons unless your game is melee combat focused. The best formulas for the hurtbox method often include hitscans to prevent wall penetration but depending on your collision that may not be necessary or can even make it worse.
>>
>>128097989
At the most basic: Hitboxes. Body has a box, weapon has a box, you do a simple check to see if the two overlap at all.

In 3D you can do the same with cubes (and depending on the situation, spheres).

I can't figure out any decent collision detection for the player against a tilemap. I have a collision map its checking against but every method I try to use has bad problems (like clipping through the tile before it gets put back on top)

Draw+artfag here.

If you're looking to do pixel art, learn a few drawing basics. They can be learned in (I shit you not) a week. Learn value, the importance of value scales, and rendering basics (rendering a sphere is a classic beginner exercise) After that, focus on basic perspective (understand eye level, one point perspective and two point perspective, mainly eye level and how it works, since you'd be amazed how many people draw the inside of a mug even if the rim of the mug is at or above eye level).

After that, the knowledge for pixel art is largely specialized and can be pretty well absorbed from the wealth of info on pixeljoint.com. it would be helpful to have a stronger art background, but the appeal of pixel art is also what makes it so simple: single-pixel lines, limited yet cohesive color palettes, ease of adding meticulous detail, well-documented guidelines, and (my big thing) not having to fuck with any sort of brush settings or brush textures.

Value scales will help you a ton since pixel art has a huge focus on vivid, tightly-packed color, and understanding value scales will help you ease into color theory and help you create better shades and tints for your palettes.

First determine some standards for the smallest collision you are going to support. Before you move your player you should use a raycast to check if the player will collide BEFORE moving them. Depending on the order you do horizontal and vertical checks you can also end up getting different behavior so if you want to make it really robust you check each one in small increments.

>>128098141
Elder Scrolls is especially unplayable when you realize they are using hitscan for everything. You can hide behind a tiny fucking lamp and a guy with a greathammer cannot hit you.

What's the difference of bottom vs pbottom? because you're using inconsistent statements there. If you made it <= then the bottom is meeting the top and can't go bellow it I guess, and I don't know what you're going for by making it &&, if you don't understand it means that it will only hold the player on the platform if they are both true statements. Try changing it to ||
>>
>>128099276
>The way I've been trying to implement it is to move the sprite and then check if it collides.
This is the first mistake pretty much everybody makes. Raycasting is where you check to see the first collider that a line hits. So in your case you would do a raycast from the corners of the character in the direction of their current velocity. You could also do things like check the entire box each step of the movement, which is not efficient but is easier to customize and make the player react to collision however you want to. The last time I implemented one of these I did something like:

>let minSpeed be the smallest collider size
>move box min( (sign(vel.x*dt)minSpeed, vel.x*dt ) in x direction
>move box min( (sign(vel.y*dt)minSpeed, vel.y*dt ) in y direction
>repeat them in that order
>if one of them hits or reaches the full velocity you stop moving in that direction

the pbottom and stuff is the position previously. I use it to see what direction the player was coming from so I know which side of the collided object to set its position to.

While a grounded state is useful, the main problem is his collision detection algorithm moves first and then checks for collision. That's why when his velocity is higher his character penetrates the floor completely.

in UE4, is there a way to know if a certain object has left the screen while the player is moving?

In the collision function its setting the sprites absolute position, not moving it. That only happens in the update function its called from. The velocity is changed in the functions and in the update function the sprite is moved with velocity*delta.

Actually I was moving the collision function around to see if it made a difference. I should put it after everything is moved again.

You misunderstand my original post: >>128100748
Change the velocity, not the position, in the collision function. Remove the normal velocity from the velocity vector until the object just touches the surface. Then update the position.
>>
>Currently have it like that senpai but it still acts weird
No you don't. Check for penetration on where it is moving to not where it currently is/was placed last frame.
it goes:
>Use velocity to figure out where your character is going.
>Check for collision there (ideally your check covers the entire path your character is taking).
>If it collides then you move it to the first position it would be moved to before it would collide.

>Actually I was moving the collision function around to see if it made a difference. I should put it after everything is moved again.
This might make it look likes it working but you will still have penetration issues.

There should be some function to check if an object is within the camera frustrum or not. Or you could perhaps check if it's being rendered or not, as UE4 have frustrum culling that would also detect when it leaves the screen.

Shit's terrible. Easiest way to turn me away from something is to coat it in moe dick-pandering bullshit.

Characters that are supposed to be cute and endearing shouldn't have to try so hard. They should just be well-written, natural, and well designed as something not blatantly meant to cater to a 700 pound hamplanet.

some components are more important than others. gameplay is more important than story generally, and a good hook is more important than both. good hooks can be cute anime girls, a good premise (crypt of the necrodancer), or just lolsorandum (the dont kill your baby game, the goat game, and so on). if you dont like games with cute girls thats fine, but not liking it because they're not well written characters is a shit reason, most characters in video games arent well written, it doesnt fucking matter,

>>128103017
why are you talking about lolis? my post talks about gameplay
>>
>>128103017
Nah, most people give a ton of fucks about the characters in their games, and basically only play vidya to look at cute girl characters.

Maybe not necessarily loli characters, but there's still a definite bias towards things with QTs and Hot Shawties in them. Just look at FF and what's gone down with that, the whole franchise is pretty much about Lightning now. VNs are more popular than ever and make up a huge section of games on Steam. Even in genres that should be immune to it, games live or die based on waifu potential -- AC: Infinity died on launch because it didn't have enough meme bitches in it. SFIV is only popular because of characters like Poison and R. Mika coming back with super slutty costumes.

The fact that you can possibly get by without story in a game doesn't mean a game wouldn't benefit from it.

Story also doesn't have to appear in the form of in your face cut scenes and shit. You can build the story via your actions, NPC events, world flavorings, etc. Giving context to your experience is a lot more fulfilling than every game just being a straight game-mechanics experience.

>>128103674
There is literally no reason not to give up.
>>
>>128103461
this level of pandering only exists in shitty korean mmo's that no one have time to play
you are discussing about art in games and since you can't do it there is no reason to talk about it
>>

>using old technology
Yeah, those cardboard sheets and headless nails pulled out of the recycling bin are SO MUCH better than anything new.

Usually all you have to do is ask. If your game is half decent you can get some really good musicians with really good deals (only pay after the game is released, etc). Music guys are thirsty as fuck.
>>
>>128104025
>Usually all you have to do is ask.
I'm getting extremely triggered by this.
It's like people telling that you can probably find an artist by just asking.
>>
>>128103976
>sourcefam is the one shitting up the thread about pandering
sorry but we won't validate your fucked up morals, we're honest devs here.
>>
>>128104161
>It's like people telling that you can probably find an artist by just asking.
Literally all artists I've found and worked with was because I asked them. If you have a proven track record of progress and you can actually make a game you can find many good artists to make games with by just asking. If it works out or not is another story that depends entirely on how you manage that relationship, how fast you work, etc.

If you already implemented good game mechanic - it usually "just ask"
Same with the musicbros - show them your game and ask

Best track anyways.

>>128104161

Well technically that's how it starts with any business transaction, you ask, and then talk out a payment arrangement.

>Clicker heroes
>Actual release in July 2014, less than a year after cookie clicker when Idle games still were pretty hot. It have since then established a huge playerbase and reptuation that moved over to steam when that version came out.

>Sakura clicker
>Released out of nowhere with no hype, practically unknown, in 2015 when idle games are less noteworthy.
>despite the unfavorable position it still gets 1/4th of the amount of players of clicker heroes because it have tits and a pretty face.

The image is actually a great example why you should put anime moe tits in the game and marketing material.
>>
>>128104293
No.
>>
>>128104281
>If you already implemented good game mechanic - it usually "just ask"
I haven't tried this, usually I approach people and say we can make anything we want. Usually artists also wanna have input in how the game plays so coming to them with something already done and saying "wanna work on this?" decreases your likelihood of people saying yes.

Why would you move to steam to play a flash game? Sakura clicker is part of a videogame series and had an established fanbase, it still got outskilled by a reddit flash game lmao
>>
>>128104293
Absolutely not
Show some dignity. Follow only people who interested you
>>128104370
>Usually artists also wanna have input
Well, they still can agree to make art for your very good game mechanic.
>>
>>128104461
>Well, they still can agree to make art for your very good game mechanic.
Yea, but IMO it just starts off on the wrong tone. The most important resource when making a game is motivation, and the likelihood that someone is going to be less motivated when they work on something they didn't really have input in creating is higher.
>>
>>128096619
Looks greatfam. Can you post moar combat? If you only have like one or two punching animations that's fine. Just beat the crap out of that kobold or whatever it is.
>>
>>128104272
your posting is too obvious, maybe you should find somewhere else this is an amateur game dev thread, we make games with love and not with dishonesty and pandering

Though some really underground games made it there, like Battle Kid 2.

You have your chance, anon. Just make a good game and people will speedrun it without you asking.
