Just for the sake of discussion, where/how do the recruitable characters fit into this game's story? My first impression is that it's kind of like Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean and/or Fire Emblem where they just pick them up along the way and then they're just "there" and they barely have any impact on the "main" story.

Please correct me if I'm wrong though

Sounds about right. There's story characters, and the rest have their own mini-episodes that take place in between the main storyline. You can "recruit" them (read: draw from gacha), but won't be able to complete their story until you pass certain points of the main story.

The gacha characters are basically characters who drop their responsibilities to come adventure with Gran and the gang but aren't necessarily always on-board the ship with him. A good example is in the Mad Max midget event Zeta and Baza drop in to help rescue Beatrix with Gran's crew operating separately. There's also characters like Vira/Noah/Ferri who you can pull in the gacha but canonically you don't meet them until you pass them in story mode after which you can actually do their Fate episodes

This is just from my perspective but it's worth a shot, especially if you liked the old school Final Fantasy games (this game gave me FFVI) vibes, and that's because they recruited two key staff members who worked on FFVI and FFIX, also Nobou Uematsu composed some of the game's songs as well and you can definitely hear his "style" in them.

But probably the biggest reason that I played this game was because Hideo Minaba worked on the game's art and I've been a fan of his work since Final Fantasy Tactics

The apparent low rate is only part of the complaint. There's also the compu gacha complaint about needing both Anira and Anchira for their fate episode, and the misleading representation complaint about Beatrix's abilities.

The Anchira gacha rate thing is just statistical rubbish if you asked me. It took me $3500 to get Rosetta (and $3000 with no Anira) but got monkey after 6 rolls yet no one is complaining about the other legfest which to me was rigged as hell.

I hate how the second battle of EX Ifrit is actually harder than Ifrit himself because the gargoyle fuck requires actually having an LB4 Baha support if I don't feel like taking a bunch of damage from it.

My fire team is an SR team, so I really don't care much for it. But I figured I might as well grab a few Ifrit weapons and maybe max out the summon for the sake of the future.

It just takes so much more effort though, the other two I just kill EX in a total of 5 turns from stat to finish, for Ifrit I need an LB4 baha to do that speed, and I rarely see those in my supports even with three or four on my friend list.
