What does /rlg/ think of a roguelike-ish game where instead of controlling a single character to get to the bottom of the dungeon or whatever, you're the dean of a school that trains/teaches people (for a fee) to dungeon dive?
You put them through whatever classes you feel will help them, pay for whatever equipment you think will help them succeed and you send them down to whatever dungeon. If they die obviously you lose all the in-game weeks/months/years you spent training them and all their equipment, along with a hit to your reputation as a school that DOESNT send people down to their death. When you send someone down you play it like a normal roguelike (I'm thinking sil-ish except less lotr), except with whatever equipment you gave the character before sending him.

You would collect whatever shit is in that dungeon (You would have a weight limit/inventory space limit based on your strength/what you have on you) and hopefully bring it back up to display in your collection for fame or sell for money to outfit and train your students. Before sending them down, you could put them through a month of weightlifting to increase how much they can carry or swordsman classes to raise swordsmanship. Along with hiring whatever randomly generated characters to teach, you could also hire any students you decide to graduate to be teachers. All npcs like students and teachers have an invisible talent level for each skill that affects how quickly the skills rise and their max cap.
>>
>>127961039
It's probably still worth wearing right away. +30% spellpower is *very* good. The aggravate, while definitely impactful, is manageable and the spellpow is great. Later if you're lucky Athena will drop her spear or something, for another +30%.

Really nice find! Sure not as good as Gandalf's staff but still fucking powerful as fuck. 30% is BIG
>>
>>127961039
>>127961296
actually according to the code it's even higher item powerlevel than Gandalf's because that 30% is ABSURD. Gandalf's gives force brand but this gives spells-fucking-rape-brand

If there isn't a FoTM going on, you can start discussion of most games pretty easily here. People just default to Crawl and more recently PCB when there's nothing else to talk about, since there's always people playing those.
>>
>>127962924
mostly just unlucky. Also you might have herbs of sustenance which are also good food (and other herbs are small food as well in a pinch).

Sil has a lot of good skills but of course the nature of increasing cost within each category the more you have already in that category means you can't get everything you want usually.

>>127962990
Sil 1.3 was released and finally we got around to remembering to put it into the OP.

also armors that penalize your accuracy by more than 1 and also penalize your evasion are rarely worth it except as swaps against archers.

Worm masses are gone in 1.3, they were a holdover from Angband. Cats are a bit iffy, there's like one or two lines in Lord of the Rings about the cats of Queen Beruthiel, a Black Numenorian. I think there may be more references to them in Unfinished Tales.

How do you get good at roguelikes? When I play a roguelite, I can always do okay. But as soon as I jump into one of these games, I always feel like I'm way out of my league. Even when playing Brogue and DCSS I feel like I'm just constantly fucking struggling and never sure what item is better than another, how scared I should be when facing a certain enemy, etc. I've read the pastas and such too.

But, for example, I'll watch online play for DCSS to try to learn some tricks. And by the first few dungeon levels, they've got weapons with some sort of resist or brand. Me? I'm stuck with a fucking busted ass weapon I started with, whatever armor I spawned with, and get killed.

I need the ultimate retard's first roguelike. Because even Brogue and DCSS which I hear are easy are even kicking my ass hard. And I want to get good. Every time I play and watch them it's so fun and I love them, but then they bend me over and fuck me in the ass like a two bit whore and spit me back out.
>>
>>127966601
Play online and post a link, people here will guide you.
>>
Add something fucking wild and/or stupid to a roguelike

For example:
Actions are measured in energy units of kilocalories, and the nutrition you gain is, too.

The game measures all your vitamins and minerals, if you don't eat a balanced diet while dungeoning your character progression as you level up suffers slightly.
>>
>>127966601
post screenshots of your character's stats/skills/equipment when you get into a risky spot. This lets you get advice and also forces you to take your hands away from the keyboard and *think* before taking your turn.

You probably also have some tactical habits you should change in terms of exploration patterns, pulling one monster at a time away from a group using a ranged attack, etc. Lots of little things that accumulate to huge change in terms of resources burned etc over the course of a game, stuff that applies across all roguelikes.
>>
>>127966739

You need to pee or shit.

If you're shitting yourself during a fight, you will have to shit on your own armor, and after the fight take it off and clean it all up, which takes several turns and requires water and cleaning items, unless you want to risk an infection.

>>
Any way of forcing NPCs in cata mid-play?
I'm feeling pretty lonely but I don't wanna restart.

I guess I could cheat in the skill points to a new game but that'd be pretty awful.
>>
>>127966601
You could try starting with One Way Heroics. It's very forgiving.

ToME4 on normal is also pretty easy.

Or you could try playing Elona+, although that game isn't typically played with permadeath. Elona's gameplay is markedly different from what's typical for the genre though, so it isn't the best representative example.

As the other anon mentioned, you could also try playing a strong melee combo in DCSS and posting in the thread for help whenever you get into trouble. Crawl is one of the easier roguelikes once you have a handle on the game's mechanics.

Brogue is probably one that you should save for later. It's a very well polished game with straightforward mechanics, but its food clock is tight and it's not very forgiving of misplays. Great game though, once you've gotten gud.

Also, do you guys normally descend quickly or do you take your time on each level?
>>
>>127966601
You should just not worry about sucking, for starters

Try DoomRL too, it's the ultimate retard's first roguelike and yet it counts as a real roguelike that people here mostly won't laugh at you for playing
>>
>>127968390
it's probably crap because it's a broken sword base type

probably

I take my time, but the best player descend quickly so they have as much time available for 950' as they want. I just watched one good player make his way down to 950' way way before the mindepth forced him there (he didn't dive but he didn't dawdle either), got some items for a while, and then (again before being forced to) went down and easily killed Morgoth with just a +1 accuracy 2d5 defender longsword. He was a noldor but still.
>>
>>127968613

>>
Is there a roguelike-like game that's kind of like cataclysm (as in sandbox), but high fantasy?
Something like Sil but not dungeon crawling.

I kind of want a sandbox RPG but in the ascii type since it leaves a lot more room for customization and it's more fun for me that way

sorry for request
>>
>>127968715
Dwarf Fortress?
>>
>>127968390
I'm not good at Sil but my relatively successful stealth Edain runs usually just dive relatively quickly while trying to grab some loot or attempt a couple of stabs for more exp. If I'm doing an elf or dwarf I usually take my time in hopes of a forge, although I'm starting to think relying on a forge is not a good way to build a character.
>>
>>127968791
No, I mean with character customization.

You play as @, not wee-men
>>
>>127968686
I'm guessing the gauntlets are either "of the forge" or "of the swordmaster" or whatever they're called. IMO just wear them and hope they're not bad...

And if they are bad, well, test the staff. You want to test staff on a stair (in case it's summoning), ideally while wearing a cursed item (in case it's sanctify i.e. remove curse), near a closed AND an open door (for opening/binding), near a monster, with an in-ided item (if it's identify), and with a chargeable item (in case it's recharging)

Hygiene and cooking minigames. If you neglect your hygiene you get charisma malus, and if you fuck up your grooming you get a malus to self-esteem/confidence. Cooking minigame involves assembling all ingredients and tools and can take place in several stages (example: preparing a cheese sauce that is a component for your baked macaroni). Different from C:DDA cooking in that you don't use a standard recipe, but can combine/prepare any ingredient(s) in anyway. Must be needlessly complex

If you're ruling out dungeon crawling as part of your game you're not really looking for a roguelike anymore. Even the most sandbox roguelikes like Elona+ still feature dungeon crawls as a significant component because, y'know, Rogue.

the damage average is low because you're probably getting very very few blows per round with such a heavy weapon

It would get better as you got super high stats, and also if you were a class that used its weight

That weapon can definitely do pretty high damage in the right character's hands

This. Adventurer can become OP, but it takes its damn while to get there.
It isn't weaker than any other class, but it isn't stronger either, unless you get to the late levels/are playing with no level cap (like the infinite dungeon).

Speaking of the infinite dungeon: is it possible to come out of it with a "telport to anglvar" (or whatever that archm, age town is called)? Or are you stuck there forever once you enter it?

I'm talking about the Infinite dungeon acfter the campaign, but i'm intersted to know if this is the case also for archmages created in infinite dungeon mode.

Once you enter the infinite dungeon (iirc you need an addon to make it actually over level 50, otherwise it's capped I think) you cannot leave. EVER. You simply don't have the talent.

so i am playing an ogre sun paladin on TOME.

i got the ogre racial ability that lets me hold a 2H weapon + shield, suffering a "50% less damage proc on your *offhand* weapon". this would let me unlock and use both 2h weapon skills and shield skills for maximum fiery justice. in theory.

i have the passive ability(Weapon of wrath) that adds fire damage based on % of my hp lost on every attack and i have the passive ability(shield of light) that let me do a free shield attack for 45% shield damage everytime i do a normal attack.

unfortunately pic related happens.
my weapon of wrath was supposed to hit for 158 damage on the main attack and possibly a smaller amount on the free shield attack. instead the log tells me i have only hit for 40 fire damage during the entire turn.
40 = 158 * 0.45 * 0.5 -> it seems like it's coming from my shield.
if i deactivate my shield of light i do around 80 fire damage, meaning my main hand damage is reduced by the ogre passive even though it's supposed to be offhand only.
if i remove my shield i litterally hit for 160 fire damage, almost doubling my damage per turn?

is this supposed to be a bug? is there any way to solve it?
fuck this build.

The bow metagame at start was nerfed pretty hard. You barely did a fraction of the damage you did and much worse accuracy. And perception no longer gives ranged bonuses because being able to hit a target more than 20 tiles away with 14 per, 14 dex, 8 marksmanship, 7 rifles with a tricked out minimum accuracy penalty rifle triggered them harder than a firmly erect big black cock with a tiny hat on the glans at a feminism rally.

if you get an archery book so you can craft fletched wooden and fletched metal arrows and have the str for one of the better bows it still bends over most towns. It's ironically kind of easier now despite the nerfs cause you can carry 300+ arrows in a shopping cart without having to sacrifice enc for storage or be hurt by your max carry weight. Later in the game you'll transfer to a repeating crossbow or pneumatic bolt driver and chew through hulks

>>127982462
No, dungeon level is off of level of recent dungeons cleared and rand encounters/jobs are off of fame. The only remaining use is getting to doctor gavella as a mutant before gaining any slots so you can be a 27 slot mutant

It was until they book locked the recipes. You can kill everything up to a hulk with a fucking nail board and take zero damage doing it. Then kill the hulk with your pitted corners or checkboard of shallow pits. You can punch hulks to death without an art. But be able to make an arrow that does more than a rock of damage without needing a semi-rare book? Over the line!
>>
>>127999016
Rip throwing endgame 22 piercing damage stack of wasp stingers. Too soon.... Felt like a motherfucking boss strutting into town with -4 torso enc, -2 leg enc, then firing barrages of wasp stingers before deep fisting everything that lived.
>>
>>127999027

Nah, that's how it started.

>>127999192
You just walk through houses to lose it in the collapses or train it through bushes until you make it to a forest to slow it with the occasional hit until you can beat it down. Also works if you get clusters of bushes

So I'm playing a ninja demigod in PCB and I was looking at the ladder entries for them and quite a few seemed to have taken Ambidexterity for them which I didn't really get since Ninjas can master dual-wielding anyway.
How does the stabbing shit work?
I was thinking that if I went with weapon versatility I could be doing huge stabs with any kind of good weapon that I find.
Also since I'm a demigod I guess I'll have pretty good device skill by the end so Demonic Grasp is a must take at 40.
Any tips and thoughts would be appreciated.
Really liking the stealthy ninja playstyle so far.
>>
>>127999530
Ambidex lets you get additional bonuses beyond your TWF skill cap iirc.
>>
>>127999731
Alright thanks, I went with that then.
I'll splat before 40 anyway so who fucking cares, really.
>>
>>128000057
Of course you'll splat with that attitude.

>>playing online
>For what purpose other than stats?
It simply plays better. I started offline too and thought the inventory on the right is absolutely indispensable. Turns out it's not; while it helps, I prefer the windows and menus in the online version. Not to mention the enemy display on the right which helped not to die like an absolute retard a few times, and of course spectating + chat.
>but I have no friends who would watch me play some boring ass roguelike
Me neither, yet I still watch people and get watched sometimes. It's fun. Also you can get over not having a mouse support within an hour, which is how long it takes to get completely used to P, R, T W and x.
>>
>>128002660
Forcing you to open menus to use your consumables is better than having the inventory since it gives you a brief pause from the action which will make you less likely to play as fast as you can. Very helpful in the long run.
>>
>>128002645
Well I think it's less about the attitude and more about the drinking since it's Saturday night.
However I've been playing roguelikes for like 20+ years already so losing a character doesn't faze me much anymore.
>>
>>128002660
All of this is irrelevant if you are playing on console. Except getting help/advice from spectators.
>>127995724

you should try to get over your dislike for ASCII since after you do, you'll realize that most, if not all, tiles are absolute turds. Especially Tome's.
Poschengband is a fun still maintained *band-variant like ToME used to be.
Maybe however you should go for Sil or Furyband since they're closer to ToME if that's really what you want.
Just play Sil, it's so fucking good.

It doesn't work like that, there was a game on the ladder that tried. You still get a big penalty for wielding a non-ninja weapon. That said, you can't master all of the appropriate weapons so it might have some use.
>>
>>128003520
adom, it has cute tiles too
don't use its donator options to change the difficulty

reset agro after noise or getting seen so you can down a whole pack of cultists

Except that's the case if you didn't get imperceptible? You can usually kill half to 3/4 then get the rest with a calm mind or keep your distance and stealth right past them. You're probably opening doors or using a noisy weapon. Stuff outside dagger stabbing you just shoot or avoid. You don't have to kill everything and pretty much anything you can't daggerstab is just draining your bullets/consumables anyway. If you took treasure hunter and +carry weight stuff, good ammo management lets you get the benefits of being able to avoid 3/4 of the fights you don't want to and have almost the same accuracy of a war vet

Poschengband feels more enjoyable without the wilderness. I am worried though, how balanced is it to compared to the full deal? I guess you are left out plenty of chances for bolstering stats and getting items.

Also, when did Mindflayers get ESP?

well rogue and monk are pretty good for it imo but if you're not enjoying it on rogue maybe go with a Beastmaster. They're the gotta-catch-em-all riding and pets class that is only allowed to take Trump.

Or a monk as you first thought, since it's quite decent. The other anons are right to point out the handiness of lategame healing powers of course.
>>
>>128018981
Well it's literally mostly summons and some utility, so. Can be fun, sure.
But if you want to go summons I'd suggest picking a Q instead, since you get full EXP from the Q's summons kills.
>>
>>128018795
Beastmaster maybe? I've never played one, but they can only pick trump so you'd think they'd be good at it.

Of classes I've tried, probably ranger. Note that riding and archery doesn't mix well at all so you'll have to pick or the other (at least early on).
>>
>>128019210

well, to clarify, riding is trained fastest by hitting things in melee, but archery while mounted is very good.

Final power: 10d13+588 mana storm. For comparison, my staff of mana storm does 425. Also, nether immunity, levitation, a couple points of speed and passwall. Pretty good.
>>
>>128019732

>>
>>128020747
How many storms can you cast with your mana pool?
650 average irresistible is pretty great. Still using Kaschei?
>>
>>128020858
It's a -20. If you've already hit skilled and you're in the earlygame it's not too much of a problem. And then it's trained enough with enough stats and launcher bonuses later that you do good enough
>>
>>128020934
It's 37 mana at 8% fail, so at best 16 without restoring mana.

You should regenerate enough to cast one-two extra times before running out. You'll fail 1.36 per mana pool on average (assuming you regen for one cast). Still, assuming you fail 4 and don't regenerate any mana, that's 7800 damage per mana pool.
Nice anon.

Sil is great. Read the manual that is in your sil folder, it's 100000% essential for making informed choices.

Bushes are suprisingly nasty, but they don't dodge so you are best off fighting them with your highest-damage (and by extension often lowest-accuracy) weapon you can find.

I wish the windows fonts for sil weren't so awful, but I play on cygwin anyways.

Yeah, get git for your system. msysgit or cygwin are good solutions for windows.
Then clone the repository.
Then git log --grep until you find the commits which changed the local tiles interface.
Then git revert them.

If you find the commit(s) in question, I could probably just do this for you, but without git you wouldn't be able to keep updated with trunk and obviously downloading new builds would not have the changes.

If I understand how skills work, I don't think it's very useful at all. Lucky gives +7 to device skill. Even for warriors, the absolute worst (non-berserker) device using class, that lets you use devices as if you were one character level higher. Wow.

+2 stealth is more useful, as most classes don't gain stealth with levels, though nimble gives +1 and doesn't completely shit on your stats.

I'd rather take something that boosts your stats, freeing up equipment for resists/speed/damage.

Is it because of the unique school? What kind of spells does it get at high levels?
>>
There's only one faggot here that keeps bashing Tome4.
Don't get me wrong, it does do things wrong, and the tiles are ugly, but it's still one of the major modern roguelikes, and it's quite a challenge if you don't play normal or nightmare with min-max combos.
>>
>>128049007
>What kind of spells does it get at high levels?

The true power of Engrish.
>>
>>128049007
Good luck getting anywhere with a hex mage. My experience is they fall off hard around level 20 once your 10 damage a turn stinking cloud not longer cuts it.

Well, that and they seem like you're supposed to melee with them, but you have mage-tier combat skills and stats.
>>
>>128049018
I could just as easily say there's only one person here that likes ToME4 and you can't prove me wrong, why even make such a stupid post? Oh right- you're a ToMEfag.
>>
>>128049372
I'm thinking of going full fuck-off ballistic and making a mage of Daemon/Armageddon.
Actually I'm definitely going to do that once I'm done with the tonberry.
>>
>>128049007
No it's not because of the unique school. It's because of the discounts on mana costs that high mages get. It used to also be the increased spellpower and devicepower for high mages, but that was removed, and now they instead get a small amount of extra spell damage (not power, which is %) per level.

So basically it's because a full mana pool of a high mage results in significantly more casts of their endgame offense spell. A regular mage gets some versatility, but it's almost always stuff you could get from devices anyways.
>>
>>128049372
Do you know what their highest level spells are like? As you said I've never gotten anywhere with one because I'm terrible at the game.
>>
>>128049661
But i can? Literally check IPs.
Also the post wasn't about Tome haters vs Tomefags, Tome is just a roguelike as another, not the shitfest haters make it look like, but neither the best roguelike or better than classics.
It's just different, sometimes for better (difficulty, longevity, class variety) sometimes for worse (ugly tiles, bland music, higher difficulties are batshit crazy)

Sil 1.3 MAXIMUM CRUTCH build to bring you well into the midgame and beyond

This build is EASY and STRONG.

Noldor, House of Fingolfin, 3/3/5/3
Put 8 points into evasion
4 points into melee
2 points into will
1 point into song.

Go Flanking then Dodging for early abilities. Read Flanking. This is your HUGE CRUTCH POWERHOUSE that allows high mobility fighting in the middle of rooms. You'll almost never "bump" directly with a monster again, unless they're blocking a corridor. It's better to keep moving adjacent to them instead.

Other than Flanking/Dodging, put *ALL* of your exp into increasing your Melee skill and your Evasion skill (NOT abilities!) for a very long time. If you're not sure if it's been long enough yet, it hasn't.

Yes I know you want more abilities because they sound cool. Shut up. Get more Melee and Evasion. Yes, they're really that good. They're literally the two numbers that directly say "kill things" and "don't die."

Still alive? Excellent. Continue to pump melee and evasion. Are you sensing a pattern yet? Good. Disregard the Lore skills, we have other things to do with that exp. Maybe snag Finesse, you'll need it later.

Once you're casually wrecking shit at 550' or so you'll want to pick up Zone of Control. This is your anti-"moves erratically" technology (read: CATS). Get Finesse as prerequisite if you haven't yet.

Around 650' you can pick up another melee ability, perhaps Charge (works with Flanking).

Once your new cruising altitude is, say, 750", branch out in Will (to resist negative statuses), Song (mostly for Slaying). You'll need 18 total will plus a source of Free Action or 8 total will and two sources of Free Action to be immune to Morgoth's slowing song, and you'll definitely want Song of Sharpness. Remember singing makes noise.

Get Sprinting before 1000'. Othewrise you have some flex with lategame exp but don't get any Smithing or Archery.

Enjoy flanking/melee/evasion and good luck.

Yes and no. Fingolfin Noldor get a huge leg up in terms of exp as compared with Edain Men because of the extra stats they start with. The Men really won't be able to get the high melee/evasion and melee abilities and evasion abilities and will and song of slaying (and maybe some perception perks) as laid out in the guide there.

That said, Edain can definitely build around flanking.

That Noldor Brawler is a bit confusing. I'm also terrible, but I find that Hardiness' 1d1 bonus when i get it really isnt worth it.

I gotta put 18 points in it for a 1d3 defense bonus? How is that helpful vs. the investment I have to put in it?

What melee skills should I be supplementing with?

>I gotta put 18 points in it for a 1d3 defense bonus? How is that helpful vs. the investment I have to put in it?
The 1d3 defense bonus really isn't worth it at all if that's all you were getting for that investment, but you need hardiness for poison and crit resistance abilities, and you need one of those to get the final constitution ability at the end

Turret has its own light source and always explode when you kill it in melee, you can't exploit darkness to shoot turret outside from its sight range.

If you remember that light exploit, the last version you play must be 0.A stable or lower.

I suppose I should be happy to hear that they're making the game less stupid, but on the other hand, cheesing it has always been the only fun part about the game.

>Implying
Mage is great since the game is unbalanced towards melee, and mages get free staves on top of that.
You should eat one piece of food per floor, and that starving means something only on the first 4/6 floors, after that you'll be mainly using healing pots. Always use your MM wand for gnolls early on, and if you waste an upgrade scroll use it on it only once, so that you can reforge it on a better wand later on. If you've already killed the second boss with it, the Warlock class is the best survival class in the game, healing and -hunger on kill is stupidly good. For escape you have your wand, very few things can survive 6/12 damage early on, or return to a corridor and abuse LOS to get guaranteed double hits with your starting knuckleduster
Remember, unidentified pots/scrolls cost less than identified, and that there's usually one or two healing pots in any given shop
>>
>>128107327
It's one of 6 effects, chosen randomly.

* Earthquate + AOE disintegration damage
* targeted lightning bolt
* AOE sound damage
* AOE gravity damage
* AOE fire+ice+lightning+acid damage all at once
* targeted triple boulder throw (shards type damage)
>>
>>128107608
So it literally does something random.
First time I cast it was
>your hands crackle with electricity!
And it seems to have fired a lightning bolt or something similar.
The second one was
>you fire a storm of boulders!
And at the pointing direction it fired literally like five boulders or so
>>128107771
Oh hey, yeah.
>>
>>128107857
But yeah, can't see myself using that. The randomness and the high SP cost when I already have to cast resistance true and stoneskin before every endgame fight, then spend SP on casting Double Attack...
I think I'm just gonna drop the book altogether.
