Pretty sure it's this shitty meta. Stunlocks into burst isn't fun, and there's little skill involved. QM can't be our savior because people spam meta shit there as well, and we just end up with the same issue. If not, then it just becomes a game of "who rolled the best comp?".

It really is atrocious. Look at how often Riot was putting out balance/hero patches when they were really growing their playerbase. They would put something out every two weeks, even if it was just a small balance tweak. Hell, sometimes they would even hotfix certain issues. That Tychus bug of going invisible on Towers of Doom is something that would have made Riot temp ban him. They slowed down their patch cycles eventually, but if you don't want players getting bored you need to shake balance up often enough for a solid meta to not come into existence like it has now.

I'd honestly rather Blizz act like Riot and put out heroes and patches every two weeks even if that meant certain heroes became completely trashcan tier. Hell, right now 31 out of 46 heroes have losing win rates, I can't see how they can make it worse unless they try.

It has some reasonably popular alternate game modes like Arena, Assault, Siege, etc. Its Dota-like mode, Conquest, is probably the worst of the bunch, with poor matchmaking and a really obscure but stale meta.

So HotS used to be my go to game, I would come back home after a long day, duo queue for a couple of hours and hopefully come out positive in MMR.

What other games are people playing that fill this void? I'm playing old games like KotoR and ready to jump back to playing diablo 3 (2.4) next week.

I really want HotS to succeed because i find Dota to be too much for me despite playing it for so many years.

I know bronzemane is coming out and not optimistic at all.

Warriors are the biggest offender at the moment. As somebody who rarely wants to play any Warrior that isn't Rexxar, it's fucking retarded having to go against Muradin and shit as the only Warrior on each other's teams. alright. well first off Transformers Universe (TFU for short) was made by Jagex Games Studio, the same people behind RuneScape and FunOrb, the latter of which was left to die without any word on it. Originally said to be a Transformers MMO, they instead went the MOBA route.

There was only two modes, team deathmatch and control points. Games were 4v4, but with no class limits. Your team could be 4 of the same mech if you wanted, and that became highly encouraged later on as balance became worse.

First off, leaver penalties. There wasn't any. People were often so afraid of their KDR being damaged (an ill-advised account stat) that as soon as they felt their 'team' falling behind they'd just leave. Leaver penalties were added for a short while, DC'ers complained and they were removed again.

There was no Versus AI for practice, and the tutorial only showed you the controls, and not any sort of thing useful in PvP combat. The only AI was unrelated enemies (the terrorcons) and only faced either as an idle hub time-passer or as a sole, repetitive PvE mission. Capture points was poorly done and whoever got the first point usually won from momentum. Going as 4 of the same 'ranged assassin' was the ideal strategy, usually Overclock. Team deathmatch, was never balanced as said before. Lose opening skirmish, two people ragequit, 2v4 for the rest of the game. No chance.

'Items' were in the form of consumables craftable outside of the game. They were also buyable with real money, making for what was not direct P2W, but you had a definite advantage over people who did not bother with stat-boosting augments.

Now for the main thing. Balance. First off, it was commonly known that many of the younger and more inexperienced players favoured the Autobot side (they wanted to fight alongside Optimus Prime just like in the movies!) while older players (edgy teens) went with the Decepticons. The Decept players were ofc more experienced and usually easily beat Autobot teams. Jagex took this as "Autobots are too weak/Decepts are too strong" and repeatedly nerfed Decepts, despite many of the better players agreeing Autobots had a clear advantage in higher level play.

Speaking of higher level play, matchmaking was awful. Downright awful. It either took ages to find you a game, threw you in a game that was already being stomped (usually your side, you replacing a leaver) or with/against clueless players.

Anyway, balance. Jagex opted to only introduce more and more proficient damage dealers after a while (Post-Flatline and Sparkscape for anyone who played) Sparkscape itself had incredibly high damage and strong AoE healing at the time.

Healers and tanks got nerfed, but damage dealers only got stronger and stronger. Stealthies got introduced, and just like Nova, had the absolute highest sudden burst in the game. Then came Macro and Firebreaker, and all hell broke loose. Both capable of instakilling anything the second their shields dropped, games became 4 Macro vs 4 Firebreaker, or as close to it as possible. Both of them almost directly outclassed other mechs, and were unchanged until the game was shut down after a few months of no meaningful updates apart from one more Auto and Decept.

Basically, it was hyper offence bullshit where unlike HotS, going tank/healer wasn't mandatory or even close to advisable.

The paywall was pretty harsh. Buying a new mech cost an absurd amount of relics (in-game currency buyable with real world money or VERY SLOWLY obtainable in-game) and 3 mechs for each side were locked behind Founder Packs, which cost as much as £400 IIRC. It also just so happened that for a while, one of the £400-pack exclusive ones, Astraea, was a weapon of mass destruction compared to the others, at least until powercreep rendered it obsolete. There was no sell-backs if you decided you didn't like the new mech (no try mode either!) or if it got nerfed a ton a month later. Usually when it wasn't the issue and other things were (see also Conduit, Decepticon's version of Morales who Autobot players were too retarded to focus down.)

Reskins weren't cheap. They cost a ton of relics, and were little more than colour variations, with 'new' skins taking an absurd amount of time to come out due to Jagex's incompetence.

One thing I forgot to mention for ages was Jagex's refusal to potentially think of it as an e-sport if it got popular, which, well, it certainly won't when there's no incentive to git gud.

Anyway, through a combination of the actual MOBA part being shite, absolutely nothing to do (no daily challenges either.) and Jagex being way too slow to act about anything, they eventually announced the shutdown when it became clear they weren't going to make any money off it.

This was all in the space of 2-3 months. And there's a very real chance of the same thing happening to HotS.
