It's a new ability skillset, like Dance or Thief.

The starting abilities (coming with the Palom and Porom event) will be

-4* Dark Raid (dark-elemental physical attack on a single target, also increases the user's ATK by 30% and decreases the user's DEF by 30%, buff is its own ID so it stacks with others)

-5* Bloody Cross (inflicts damage on the user and deals 2x dark-elemental physical attacks on a single target)

Two more abilities come with the Kuja event:

-4* Memento Mori (inflicts Doom on the caster, self-buffs MAG and deals a dark-elemental magic attack on a single target)

-5* Negative Aura (deals two dark-elemental magic attacks on a single target, power is boosted if user is under Doom status (standard cast is 3.0x the potency of Fire, boosted cast is 6.9x the potency)

Kuja's a 5* Darkness user, of course, but a bunch of other characters will get updated, too (all of these have 5* Darkness - I've listed them in game synergy order):

Starting out, you may not realize that the way the system is set up, Balthier is the slowest at using guns, and Fran is the slowest at using bows.

There's nothing tangible you can permanently miss. There ARE a bunch of scenes you can miss by not going places/talking to people before doing other events, and lots of alternate scenes, but none of that really affects your game.

The ONE thing I can see that you could miss out on is a subquest reward (that is still a rare drop/steal if you miss it)

-becomes available after getting Dawn Shard
-complete the first events in Nalbina BEFORE you reach Mosphoran Highwaste
-if you don't complete the first events in Nalbina, quest is "lost" after you defeat the boss of Mt Bur-Omisace, meaning you also fail in two scenes associated with the quest (one scene in Nalbina, the other in Archades)
-can complete it after you gain access to Archades
-the reward for quest is Salamand Halcyon, which you can otherwise get from Salamand Entite (steal or drop)

Salamand Halycon is a Bazaar item you need to trade in for a Late-model Rifle (Arcturus).

They removed a lot of the bullshit for IZJS. You can even control guests and espers now. Spawning chests requires 1 screen zoning, instead of 3. You can buy all the gambits right away if you want. Quickenings dont use up all of your MP anymore. No damage limit...

...and my personal favorite change is the L1 speed boost. what a godsend.

Does anyone know if the sprite sheet for adult Rydia has been leaked? I remember reading a long time ago that it was available, but I can't find it.

I'm planning on trying out the model switching thing and as Rydia is my best mage (due to Quistis whip being the only mage weapon I have) I would like to model change her to her adult version. My artistic skill is below zero so I very much doubt that I'm capable of creating a sprite sheet on my own.

I'm sorta worried about choosing mismatched classes now... If I try to go with what seems thematically appropriate, (eg, Vaan as a thief, Penelo a... white mage? etc.) will I lock myself out of learning certain abilities? They get one job for the whole game and can't switch. Going with thematically appropriate classes is not a great idea if you care about optimization, but it doesn't make the game unplayable.

The best class for each character depends on how you want to play the game and what you expect from each character. I can tell you that Machinist and Time Mage are among the weaker classes in the game overall and that Red Mage, Samurai, Monk, and White Mage are the strongest in the game.

The biggest thing is probably just not choosing two of the same class, because the way it's set up, characters that share the same job board will have to compete for Esper licenses (because only one character in the same job can access the Esper section at a time).

Everybody has some licenses they'll always have, regardless of the job you pick.

How do I get kids aged 8-14 to be interested in Final Fantasy if they have never played a RPG before? When I first got into FF I was pretty young. I was already into nerdy stuff, both fantasy stuff like LotR, and sci-fi stuff like Star Trek; so when I realized FF was combining elements of both, (robots and time travel in FF1, aliens in FF4, and so on) that really made the series stand out and I became a fan.

But like someone else already said, some people just aren't into the fantasy stuff or RPG gameplay. Different people like different things.

I do think as far as younger kids go, FFIV is a good game to go with. It's got a relatively straight forward plot that's easy to follow, but it still hits good emotional points, betrayal, redemption, romance that doesn't get too mushy. It's a good story for kids who are young enough not to recognize the cliches. Later games (VI, VII and beyond) seem more written with teenagers in mind.

Why does type-0 have such quality qts? There isn't one bad egg in the bunch. Compare it to any other FF game and there's always some shitty girls mixed in with the good ones.

Continuing my Final Fantasy odyssey- I had a hard time finding leads again after the volcano. Turned out an NPC that was sleeping before woke up and talked about a cave to the north. It was the only place I could see nearby on the map that I could get by ship anyway. Though there were two caves, but the first was boss statue-guarded.

Then I really had to wander. None of the nearby NPCs seemed to care that I had this stone, even if they talked about it. It was back in the elf town with the sages I had already forgotten that said they'd have something to say later who told me to go back to the desert.

Kind of just want the player to wander around, I guess; it was a conspicuous spot I hadn't been that I could reach, but there weren't any glowing map points. Oh well, then I went flying and found the new places I could reach (a lot of stuff way out from where I can park) and talked to dragons and got a rat tail and POWERED UP. Seemed like a good place for a break.

There's only three versions of the game that use the daily charge system instead of the MP pool:
Original NES version
Wonderswan Color version
PS1 version

PS1 is best because it fixed the bugs in the NES version and WSC was never released in English.

PSP Anniversary Edition redrew all the sprites to be high-res, kept the bonus dungeons, and added 1 more bonus endgame dungeon.

Mobile versions are based on Anniversary, with touch controls and new bugs. I think Android doesn't have the bonus dungeons.

There's a 3DS port of Anniversary Edition with added 3D effects that came out with Explorers in Japan.

On several separate occasions I've played FFXIII up chapter 12 or 13 and I always end up having to stop for different reasons. I want to played FFXIII-2 and Lightning Returns.
