Why is this shit gameplay required?
Because it's not a game, it's a digital version of a faux fireplace for old dads. It's was not created with an intent to play it, but with an intent to look at it and relax.
I seriously do not know how it's possible to play this for more than a couple of days or a week max.
I played for about that much in beta, then again several months later, and once more this week, after which the process will probably repeat.
I can understand how dads play it because they literally only play for 2 hours or so a week so they don't have time to realise it has no content, but playing any more than that is a complete mystery to me. And this is coming from someone who grinded out the same procedurally generated warframe missions for almost a year straight.

Dock in a station you're wanted at. Don't get killed yet.
Take off and let the sec outside shoot you down. You'll be able to rebuy the shitwinder including paying the 600k to wipe your record clean.
If you don't want to pay, get someone with a KWS to kill you but make sure the last place you docked is somewhere you're clean. Your bounty will go dormant and will be hidden from players as long as you don't commit any crimes (not even minor fines!) in systems where you were wanted.
After 7 days the dormant bounty becomes a legacy fine and can't be reactivated as a bounty. Just don't dock anywhere you have a legacy fine and then die because it gets added to your rebuy cost when you respawn there.
If you're pledged to a power already, you can go to the galactic powers screen and find the control tab of the power you want to undermine. That gives you instructions on how to do it.

It's odd how small Elite freighters are. Even the clipper can only carry 700 odd tonnes of cargo. A big, modern cargo ship can carry 20,000 containers. The containers alone weight a 2 or 3 tonnes each.
They should introduce the big Lynx bulk carriers. Get some more use out of that capital ship hyperspace animation.

DBS is one of the ships that has more than enough agility to keep it's guns on target pretty much all the time. It takes a bit of time but it's good practice for when you use weapons that have no gimballed variant (Rails/Plasma).
However if you mix weapon types (projectiles/hitscan) then some gimbals are good to keep everything on target.

Even little things like turning up at a station and finding one of those things parked there unloading would be a nice bit of variety in the scenery.
Having them in distress call beacons would be nice as well. Not sure exactly how their hyperspace works though, that would change how you fit them into the game.
Yeah, capital class freighters are sorely missing from the game. I heard FD want to expand on capital ships a some point, and they probably aren't adding them to the game yet because of that, but who when they'll get around to it. E:D generally need way more variety in stations and other structures in general, really. didn't one of the Dev Diaries mention something about shipyards and stuff?

Well yeah they need to give us more to do with them. All we can do at the moment is is shoot them (a common theme of ED interactions). Give them a docking pad and give us missions to deliver shit to them, escort them, etc.
Landing pads are probably full. Might be players, might be bugged AI ships. What you can do is quit to the main menu, start solo mode and try again. This kind of shit could have been fixed long ago.

Even the "small" ships in Elite are fucking enormous. What's odd is that they have so little internal space. A Type-9 should be able to carry several thousand tons of cargo.
One of the AI ships actually gets forced to take off the first time your docking request gets denied. It takes a little while before the pad is ready to accept a docking request from you though.
Yeah they ended up using that asset for the travel engine module for new stations.
They jettison the module and break it down for parts once the engineering section containing the factories and docking bay arrives at the destination.
Frontier really fucked the scaling.
It's like they upscaled everything 2-3x before adding in the cockpit chairs leaving you with weird anomalies like two meters of headroom for no fucking reason.
You should see the T9's cockpit in VR. It's around 30 feet tall with two separate floors behind the pilot seat, not counting the three raised platforms with the stairways and operator seating, and about as much square footage as two-storey house.
Yeah the ships themselves are quite big. I guess I meant small in terms of cargo capacity. Comparing a fictional spaceship to something like a Maersk Triple-E container ship is probably not fair but the disparity in loads is immense.
The only thing I can think is that this is due to the focus on VR for the walking season so we can move around our ships with a minimum of vomit inducing canned animations.

Hating on the Cobra just because dads nostalgia over it is some pretentious horseshit, but no, Horizons is not worth it. I'd wait until they actually finish some of the scheduled additions and it goes on sale for $15 again.
Early game it carries plenty of cargo for trading, has great jump range for rare trading or smuggling and fights well enough compared to a Viper, which it is both faster and more maneuverable than.
It's only slightly less effective at combat than a Viper and dramatically better at absolutely everything else.
And as you'd like to pretend is a bad trait, it can outrun anything it can't deal with.
Basically there is no reason whatsoever to not get one as a progression ship at the very least.
Then you realize that all those low end ships you speak of are totally fucking useless now that it is so easy to make 10 million in a RES site.
So no, you shouldn't be using a Cobra for any significant amount of time. And you will have a Clipper up your ass regardless.
Bought an Asp the other day out of curiosity. Nice visibility from the cockpit, sounds like a fucking propeller plane though. Also slides around a lot more than most other ships I'm used to.

Viper's maneuverability is shit and it can't stack armor/scbs and chaff/hs like a Cobra can. It's objectively worse at combat in spite of that being its focus.

Pitch and roll on the Viper are worse, though yaw is better for what it's worth. Also vertical thrusters seem to be stronger on the Viper since it slides a lot less when pitching.

Have you? The Viper MkIII's pitch/roll/yaw are almost as bad as a Python. The MkIV is actually worse than a Python. Lateral thruster authority is bad on both Viper models too.
Collect rocks, shoot robots, steal data. There's one kind of rover with one kind of weapon and no real upgrades, and the bases you can attack are all pretty much the same but different sizes.
Blue range pitch rates look worse for the Viper IIRC. It's significantly faster in the blue zone but the Cobra's pitch speed improves by a larger margin in the blue.
Engine pips also have an effect:
Viper with 4A shield has 126 hull + 179 shields = 305 total damage capacity
Cobra with 4A shield has 216 hull + 124 shields = 340 total damage capacity
Cobra is less impacted by additional mass due to base mass already being high and having a bigger engine
Cobra gains more armor from bulkhead upgrades
Cobra can carry better shield cell banks and hull reinforcements
Cobra turns better and is faster than a Viper even while weighed down
Armored Viper with one class 3 shield cell and stacked hull reinforcements has 545 armor and 754 total shield capacity
Armored Cobra with one class 4 shield cell and stacked hull reinforcements has 1320 armor and 824 total shield capacity while still being faster and more maneuverable than a completely unarmored Viper
And the icing on the cake? The Cobra has power left over for shield boosters if it wants. The Viper doesn't.
There was a lot debate about Viper vs Cobra before the DBS and Vulture came along and rendered the Viper completely obsolete.

I've run two PAs before. I had to shut down life support when HPs are deployed in order to make it work though, so max 25 minutes in combat.
Not really practical for PVE but in PVP it'll surprise most opponents. I've taken out player ferdies with relative ease using that setup. By the time the realize they need to run the module splash from the PAs has killed their drives and half their other systems.
I just got ED (not Horizons) on PC and I am really enjoying the look of what I can do. I managed to get in to the game but then did my usual panic and wanted to quickly dock again because I could see people waiting for me to kill me.
So imagine I am a chimp trying to play.

Negligible impact to its flight model given its base mass and C4 engine. Even completely loaded down with HRPs and military armor its mass is far below the optimal mark for the engines

You aim your mouse somewhere, accelerate and you fly at it. Then you just have thrusters to pretty much instantly move up/down/left/right.
You can use sticks/whatever but it works off the same principle

If it's illegal where you're taking them, if you're scanned, yes you'll get a bounty, and probably a fairly hefty one too, since it's 87 of the fuckers. But yes, you can get scanned then turn in the mission and pay off the bounty, so long as the mission doesn't specify that getting scanned will fail the mission.
Alternatively you could skirt around the edge of wherever you're going till you line up with the entrance then scoot along in silent running mode. Grab yourself a heatsink, too. Careful not to fuck up and crash cause you could asplode without shields.

I just started and I'm really confused as to what I'm supposed to be doing right now. I've been flying around in super cruise scanning shit and trying to check out signal sources and stuff.
I've found a bunch of wanted dudes, but I can't interdict because I don't have the thing to do it.
Why do signal sources never turn out to be anything? And what should I be doing? Should I go pick up a mission from a statio or what? Somebody told me to hunt bounties from smaller ships around signal sources, but nothing is ever there.
if you are looking for mobility and versatility in hardpoints, what ship should I look for? the faster the better

It works against human players. If you're interdicted by a human, what you should do is silent running, fa off boost, turning back and boost again. That will make them lose you. Heat sinks are targetable and will show your position. Terrible if you're not within the visual limits

Tried it once. It was pretty durable, not very agile at all, and had enough firepower to lay most ships out.
If you're looking for something good, but don't want to cheese with a Vulture, you could do worse than the FAS.
The FAS can utilize 5 weapons, 2 med points, 2 large points, and the ship itself. Its shields are absolute dog shit, but the hull itself was forged in the heart of a dying star. Decent hard point placement, and with proper equipment and handling can make for mad dashes, but its not a dog fighter. Using the FAS to the max requires getting used to toggling flight assist on and off for more tight maneuvers. Once you get used to that it can easily punch well above its weight class while taking relatively little damage.
Also, the thing is a guided projectile. Ram every goddamned thing with it. Wear the scraps of Anacondas like you are Buffalo Bill.

Authority interdicting you? Submit and do the same. You'll be out of range of there scanners.
You'll need: An Asp with A-rated thrusters/ power plant/power coupling.

Wanna do powerplay shit? Its basically just a flavored theme of the above three, but yeah whatever. Can unlock some other specific areas to shoot other shit at I guess.
Wanna explore shit? Get in literally anything with a jump range past 20 and an advanced scanner and just go fucking anywhere it doesn't even matter. Expect to show back up in civilized space a week later and only make maybe 2m credits for all the 4 3 2 1 you've had to listen to.
There i've just listed literally everything there is to do in this game.

Get ASP Explorer and upgrade it's FSD to maximum and then get fuelscoop and as much cargo racks as possible
you can get with the A5-FSD to Robigo within 18 jumps on the fastest route
I don't know the letter for it, if you find one and scan it (or its already explored) it displays as "white dwarf", they're tiny and pull you out of FSD when its not even filled 1/4 of the screen

I'm pretty good at space/flight sims, so I've done okay in combat just with a sidewinder, but I went to eravate and got instantly interdicted by a vulture who shredded me in about a minute.

What are considered the best ones? I heard there's ones where you don't even have to leave the station, is that right?
I recommend last hitting ships in high res sites with your sidewinder. I made 700k then bought a vulture like that. Wait for the cops to stomp em til 10% hull then get you boot in too and pocket the bounty. If your in the starting system go to kremain.
Missions are shit. Totally shit. So shit they even made them worse every update. Made them more complicated and made elite ranks gate them. Fuck missions serious. I like missions but elite dangerous missions are just straight cancer. AVOID.

What's stopping you from just abandoning the missions at Robigo and selling the slaves back to them. There's no fine as far as I'm aware, and I just did it since I got scanned. I assume you lose some rep with them, but if you keep doing it what happens? Do they stop giving you missions? Surely there's a countermeasure to this sort of thing in the game somewhere?

This is the most British game I've played in a long time.
It's nice to look at but had all the depth surgically removed so as to not offend anyone while also trying to instill a sense of nostalgia. Meanwhile the mods and the dadpolice continually reinforce that complaining about the fact that there's a big black man fucking your wife in the back room would be terribly racist and that it's just okay as it is.

kremain is a system near lhs 3447. like 2 jumps in a sidey. also res sites are in the rings of planets like saturn. They only show up on the right panel where you see stations when you get nearish them.
Got a Hauler explorer with an ADS and a DSS, and 4.7 Mili to work with. What's my next step? Should I start working on a DBS/DBE, or an Asp Scout? Or wait until I can comfortably fit an Asp Explorer?

Pretty similar to what I'm using and it's working out ok for me. I don't know if you need that many fuel tanks though. I just have the two 32T tanks and combined with a few quick passes of some of the stars throughout the trip whilst waiting for FSD cooldown it manages me fine. You could probably knock off the last 3 internal compartments at least but that's just my opinion.
How do you find dealing with pirates and sys auth?
Just evade and if that fails combat log before you get scanned or shot at?

honestly the DBS is the best in its category
you can get better shields than the Viper with boosters, which you can actually mount because you have more U points, the same amount of dakka, better agility in a package that gets 420 armor with military armor
and you get 20+LY jump range even with full cargo hold
well worth the 500k over the Viper
I've made 2+million with it by bounty hunting in HiRES just today and at oen point even just held my own in a frontal engagement against a Clipper
I know the DBE turns less but dat large hardpoint tho

Pirates are an irritation, but generally a hell of a lot more preferable to security. System authority are an absolute ass. It's all scripted though so you can generally just guage it by what you see it the messages window. When I see red sys auth messages I ensure that I don't let them get behind me and try to jump out of that system as soon as possible. The safest thing to do is try to avoid interdiction at all costs, and if you ever see interdiction detected, kill the process. The second safest is to always submit to interdiction, then boost away and jump out, but doing that without sheilds can be a bit of a risk when it comes to pirates. Also sys auth like to drop in whilst pirates are attacking, which can cause them to literally spawn right in front of you and be completely unavoidable. A lot of it is up to preference, you might decide it's worth having a cheap sheild module for insurance against pirates, or you might be comfortable without one.

Where does Robigo get all these slaves anyway. You'd think, being an isolated mining facility in deep space, that they'd need slaves transported to them, not the other way around, let alone such vast quantities of them. Is it some kind of breeding platform? And what's more, who is willing to pay 2-5 million credits for for simply trasporting a dozen or half dozen slaves? Considering that delivery would only be a small percentage of the actual sale price, that would mean each individual slave is worth as much as 10,000,000 Credits. Who is paying that much for slaves and what exactly is special about these slaves that they would be worth so much money?
I personally can only think of one kind of slave that anyone would pay so much for, and also one that would require such effort to conceal from the authorities.
