Marth is mediocre at best. He has fallen from grace since his Melee and Brawl days with a gimped sword range and end-lag on his air attacks. He can be mained but not without a lot of effort.

A stronger alternative is Ike who has been buffed like crazy and yet still hits like a truck. Cloud doesn't have a counter but is more like the previous versions of Marth than Marth himself is in 4. No counter but has the neutral, range and general feel.

If you want to try someone who is super reactive and different, you could try Little Mac.

He isn't a sword user and has mediocre range, but he has a counter and has a god-tier ground game if used right. Issue is he falls apart completely as he fights high tiers and is almost unuseable against Sheik and ZSS. Granted the last part applies to most but Shiek vs Mac is probably 9:1, not even the heavies have it that bad. 10/10 on the fun scale though.

In high level play she is disgustingly strong and renders Mac almost unplayable. Between her and the others, most of the cast is rendered null.

And to be honest, if you want to play Marth, play Marth. If you learn what you're doing and make smart choices you'll do just fine with him, and he's very good for teaching fundamentals and basics. Unless you're aiming to become some super pro who plays in all of the big tournaments, it's really not worth prioritizing playing a character that is high tier if you don't want to play them. Marth isn't even that bad, just nowhere near his glory days.

I wouldn't call myself good but Greninja loses to all the top tiers really hard and a bunch of high/mid tiers too Sheik, Pikachu, and Fox are a nightmare. Rosa can be managed but will never be pleasant to fight against in general. Yoshi and the plumbers are slightly less nightmarish but still fuck you up in the neutral and combo you to oblivion. Even Ness is a struggle because his everything is twice as quick as your everything. Basically counterpick to Sheik any time your opponent is good and/or using a good character.
Also I'm not good so feel free to not believe me, but your experience will probably be similar.

Smash bros is a gateway fighting game of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of hitboxes and characters that aren't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive item faggotry and DI. The normal FGC member can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad.

However, these very aspects that try to smear over the shit of its core make it a breeding ground for aspie, unsociable underageb& faggots who engage in every kind of faggotry both online and in the real world. The cartoonish characters all trying their hardest to look fun, the one button special moves, peculiar, colorful clothes, the whole trophy faggotry and everything about the Nintendo world fuels their escapist fantasies, while the wacky character backgrounds, emphasis on air dodging, and overall easiness of the series make it fit just right with the casual drives of your average preteen and his sense of unwarranted self-importance towards the world. Exactly the kind of shit that makes little kiddies and underageb& retards eat this shit right the fuck up.

Smash is basically THE series to attract the most hated fanbase known to EVO, which is why, regardless of individual opinions, it is the responsibility of every fgc member to troll the fuck out of this game and everyone who likes it, and ensure that no smash threads ever encourage the newfriends to show their faces here.

Melee players want to enjoy Brawl and Smash 4 too. But they feel slow, they don't feel as involving, less responsive, and the dev team is patching out anything they think is too strong because they think it'll get abused as opposed to letting people figure out ways to counter it, which is one of the things gameplay depth stems out from. All Melee players want is the core system from Melee, which is a game casuals and competitive players can both play and enjoy, but more content, which is why Project M gets love too.

The other fighting games you mentioned have the benefit of being traditional fighters. The traditional FG has mechanics native to the genre that immediately give it the potential for depth and carry-over of fundamentals, and with a dev that understands that, the games are generally fun every time, even if they're different from eachother. SF3 and SF4 are very different games, Marvel 2 and 3 are very different games, and Blazblue has been improving every single iteration in terms of core mechanics. This is the difference that Smash holds, where the games after Melee have those core mechanics stripped down and simplified, and as a result lose both their depth of play, and satisfying feel.

For those uneducated, when we talk about options, we're talking about character/movement options, not game modes, not little stupid things like event modes or trophy collecting or smash run. Cool things you can do while actually playing the character, which makes the game very dynamic and fun to play. This is the reason Brawl and Smash 4 get dropped so fast, because we know just from playing it, because we play smash so much, that they wont have the same gameplay value.

We arent fooled or led aside by extra flashy icing, sparklers, huge candles, spinners, and fireworks on the cake, we want the cake itself to be good. A dry cake is a shit cake.

Its incredibly low. At 0% it doesn't knock you around at all making dash attack or grab follow ups. After that, up to 100%ish, Its usually agood link into a forward air for like 16-20% damage.

Its nice that everything Duck Hunt has can stop Aura Sphere (and any other big charging projectile from Samus, Mewtwo, and Wii Fit Trainer), though it takes like half a second to charge a new one to full at that percent so I guess that's not saying much for Lucario.

Is it just me or are people really overhyping Cloud in terms of tier lists?
