The very first thing you should do on a new character is turn off the auto-skiller, because it is not smart about what skills to prioritize when, and it spreads out experience. It's better to focus on one or two things at a time, and swap what those things are occasionally, than to just slooowly level up 8 things at once.

Check in on it every floor or two as you decide what to change in your skilling.

That was lesson #1. Lesson #2 is leave closed tombs lie.

Second floor of the church and I start opening tombs, mummy pops out of one. I inspect the mummy and it says they hang out around floor 16. I start running and the mummy knocks me across the room in one punch, nearly kills me, curses me, and gives me the mummy-itch. Mummy is between me and the exit to, so I desperately light a molotov and huck it at the beast.

On the bright side, technically the mummy didn't kill me.

Trying to decide if I should go with shock resistance as an early rogue perk. Dieing of insanity was pretty shitty but if I had been smart enough to 360 from every single ghoul I saw I probably would have only had around 75% at that time.

Disallowing player Draconian colors is actually a simple one line change, there's no need to remove the cruft if you just want something functional to apply for your own local patch:

Changing the bit highlighted in this pic will change what draconian colors the game will select from at XL7.

I have doubts on how to proceed.
I have cleared Dungeon up to 15th floor, the Lair and the Orcish mines, plus the first floor of Elven Halls.

Should i attempt the Spider Nest or the Shoals next? I have a ring of Poison Resistance in my lair and various fire wands + Fireball spell (not very skilled in Fire magic though) and i can punch most monster's shit in, is it enough or do i need more precautions?

I did this some hours ago but anyway

The quest level was great, there's actually about six incubi that gave me three free levelups and four shopkeepers, one of which has a magic lamp (to wish for scales, I guess) but I eh

I accidentally put in a wand I didn't know about in my bag of holding

and apparently it was cancellation
so now I don't have a bag of holding!

But it's okay because I have the best possible artefact in the game. Still bummed out though. I'm gonna enchant some rings of intelligence/Adorment to +5 so I can consort with those succubi without failing. Also there's some magic traps in the mines I can use to maximize my pre-existing CHA.
Also I have something like
80 K/C rations and a ring of slow digesting, so I don't think food is ever going to be a problem anymore.

When trying to add a ring to crawl? I double checked enums and the relevant item properties, but for some reason whenever I go into % with that ring on, I crash and get this error.

I watched the ttyrec and saw my character spamming Magic Darts at the griffon, and the speed of the messages was too high, even at 1/10 playing speed. I have a macro to use Magic Darts.
What is the possibility that it is a bug? A macro bug?

Maybe upload a pastebin of the stuff you're trying to change, it's hard to say without seeing what exactly you're doing.

That assert looks like it's just checking if the equipment_type enum for the item in question actually exists between EQ_WEAPON and EQ_RING_AMULET in enum.h, so if you've added everything properly it shouldn't be having problems.

Have you added a new equipment_type enum and placed it after the NUM_EQUIP enum? NUM_EQUIP acts as a range bound there, so if you're adding a new type you would want it to be placed at the bottom of the existing entries but above NUM_EQUIP.

Note that these are slot type enums though, so if you're just adding a new item without adding, for example, a second amulet slot or something, you (probably?) shouldn't be needing to mess with these particular enums.

OWH is probably the easiest roguelike i've ever played, and it's pretty fun to boot.

Kinda short for my tastes but it's good other than that. I have a weakness for games like Elona+ that take forever to beat.

And if you're a runecrafter you can even set the strength of the spell yourself, you can use all your mana for one megablast etc.
Not to mention that after leveling the spells, for example fire turns into hellfire or holy fire, shit like that.
Truth be told though Furyband is also the go-to for insane melee.

To illustrate the point, here's my current Dwarf priest of Aule. Aule lets you enchant your shit with piety. I don't think this is even halfway enchanted, I don't have the skill levels for that yet.

Since there was a fan-made patch for Dungeons of Dredmor that balanced a lot of shit and fixed bugs, I was thinking of making a mod. It'd increase the difficulty of the game by buffing monsters and giving them more flavor with extra abilities. Maybe even allowing a diagonal movement system and some extra equipment geared towards rogues and wizards?

Here's a handy guide for learning it faster.
The y/u and /b/n keys are your up-left, up-right, down-left, and down-right diagonals. Fairly easy to remember because they are positioned above or below the home row appropriately. And obviously the one of the left is your left diagonal, the one on the right is your right diagonal.

The home row ones are your cardinal directions. Then H and L are the leftmost and rightmost of your home row keys, and make you go left and right respectively.

The main pair that takes some practice to remember is the j/k pair for down and up respectively.

So most of them are pretty easy to remember abstractly, and after a little practice (like an hour or two at most) it will feel natural.

Lava Orcs are actually really annoying to re-add because they were added into trunk and then changed, and then patched out over many commits.

And then a bunch of stuff to do with races and racial muts was shifted around since they were taken out.

I edited zombies in my own game to be much more dangerous so that I couldn't tab them to death with a knife spear. I also messed with their LoS so that stealth would be more viable but I ended up getting frustrated. Messing around in the .jsons is kind of rough though. The formatting is odd and a lot of the tags are monster specific for some reason. Its much easier to just add or remove items and edit monster stats rather than give them new attacks. I wasn't too impressed with cult of personality, but I think getting his cyberdemon summon is the only way I could have killed him, so maybe all you advocates for it had a point.

The odds are different in poscheng of course, and the semi-randomized-speed means you can't fully avoid the possibility of a double move as one can in vanilla.

Maybe I could have shuffled some things around to get more speed, though I'm not sure I had anything higher for the weapon slot. Guess I should have tried to work the +7 speed boots into my gear and found a way to get rNether and 5 chr elsewhere.

Makhleb is very, very good throughout all of the game. He gives you ranged invocations, demon summonings, and health on every kill that scales with enemy HD (I think). I wouldn't recommend abandoning any god tht early in the game (especially Oka and Makhleb).

Yeah. Troll is powerful enough to do that. When you get to the Lair, sprint to Lair-6 and burn magic mapping if you have it. Repeat through Lair-8 to find the entrance to Slime, which usually has an altar. Jivya altars also are very rarely encountered in the main Dungeon as well as one Temple layout. Enjoy your free Slimy Rune when you hit 4 pips of piety.

I think most don't *hate* it but the reasons for not liking it in my mind are:
-annoyingly long animations, agonizing as compared with lightning speed classic ascii roguelikes (which I recently learned can be put into superfast mode)
-horrific mouse-only inventory management. The classic roguelikes using keyboard to instantly access inv items is super nice in comprison. Also while we're here, fuck DDA inventory management with a megahuge scrolling list.
-related to above, lugging around tons of crafting shit
-Strictly better to navigate with the mouse as compared with keyboard to avoid accidentally walking into traps etc. For all that traditional roguelikes can be hard for novices to learn the interface, they are fucking fast and powerful for accustomed users that are quick typists, with play often happening from the home row typing position
-Tons of very forced maymays to be totes funnay for novelty entertainment or marketing purposes. This actually doesn't bug me all *that* much but it does bother some others heavily.

So really it's that, despite having pretty graphics, the UI/UX is actually WORSE for me than the classic roguelikes. It's slower, mouse-bound, and less powerful.

I still as I said earlier very much enjoy seeing content posted by others, but I get really annoyed with the inputs necessary to play it myself.

I've found 2 games that seem to fit my preference, but I don't know which one is better. Catacomb Kids or Vagante.

If anything. Vagante seems to have a much more competent update cycle and has offline multiplayer, close to getting online, while Catacomb Kids seems to have literally had all it's updates be l8 and the game isn't really complete at all. Though they're both pretty damn steep in price (13 bucks for an early access Rogue-lite) so I'm still on the fence.

yes in those games, real-life-time tempo matters...waiting to review the situation just lets it degrade. As you probably realize abstractly, if not yet instinctively, in roguelikes, burning a turn wastefully serves the same function...giving up tempo and letting the situation worsen.

yes. in vanilla nethack blessed scrolls of genocide wipe out an entire class of monsters (liches, mind flayers, water monsters etc) and uncursed only a single exponent of that class. In dynahack blessed scrolls act like uncursed ones and uncursed ones act the same way as PCB's genocide scrolls, select one type and delete them from the floor (taken from unnethack, which is a harder variant of nethack). They are the rarest scroll in the game and take a lot of charges to write with a magic marker.

The learndb has hand axes listed at 7 base damage and maces at 8 base damage, so since it's 1 point of base damage for every point of UC, they probably become equally viable somewhere around 7-8 UC if you don't have claws.

First off, that's ALL ROGUELIKES, and I'm going to answer it like that instead of just for DCSS.
And second it's very rarely true.

Once in a while, an extremely rare while, the RNG actually just kills you out of nowhere despite ideal play from the moment your character spawned. But this is enormously rare in most RLs. There's almost always stuff you could have done to avoid the situation. Sometimes one turn ahead of time, sometimes twenty turns ahead of time, sometimes a thousand turns ahead of time.

In cautious exploration patterns (not moving slowly outward from a stair, then pulling back to your fighting-prepped terrain in case you woke something out of LOS, then going further along, slowly spiraling out from your closest safe cleared area with stair) can stop a huge portion of bad things from ever having the chance to occur. Being accidentally wasteful even much much earlier can spiral into a death. Let a monster melee to steal your potion 17 floors ago? Spend a bit too much cash on item X and not have enough for item Y? Ignore that a monster can roll its best spell or dam every round? Act like unexplored territory near an enemy was "probably safe enough" to not drag your fight to good fighting or escape stair terrain? Spend a single turn taking a footstep towards danger because you were too used to moving at a certain pace and didn't stop immediately on seeing your Pikel Sigmund Gastronk shitty story nobody cares about? Act like teleportation is not in fact risky? Neglect to check multiple down-stairs from the above floor to have "core-drilling samples" of map and spawns? Forget you only had 2 remaining <thing> instead of 3? Not calc for some monster affecting your resources (stealing items, draining mana, whatever)? Neglect to do some effect that more value the longer it's been active (e.g. buff, summon) early enough? Open the door from melee range instead of at range, or not at all? ETC

You should try to make and watch recordings of your games.

I was thinking of smashing a bottle of paralysis in his face and then just polymorph into a green slime and watch him get slimed since apparently he doesn't have free action and no monster resist slimification. Since he's wearing a GDSM and a shield of reflection I cannot finger of death him or even polymorph into a black dragon and disintegrate him, since she's female and I'm female too. I cannot polymorph into a nymph/succubus to steal his gear (read, his shield of reflection so I can disintegrate him and his Amulet so I don't have to do it twice) and I can't kill him in melee since he's got luckblade, that is a 10% vorpal, draining, cancelling long sword.
But being slimed only counts magic cancellation and he's wearing DSM, which gives MC0.
Is it a viable tactic? I'm playing my dyna guy through SSH so I can't make a new character and wizmode as I would in local.

Item weight was meaningless on any actually good character and only served to make lives of shitty characters like DE even more miserable. You only need to carry enough consumables to escape/survive one fight, and you don't need 30 Str for that.

Really all that permacorr meant was that you ended up scumchecking cloaks and aux items so you could have spare +2s to wear if you wanted to do slime.

In practice, sure, you could ruin something if you bump moved into an oklob, but it feels like those have autoexcluded since at least 0.6 so it's not like that happened often and if it did, you weren't paying attention.

The only annoying permacorrosion was from that one lair vault that had all 3 > inside of an oklob vault, and that didn't even exist in old-oldcrawl.

This isn't a flavor removal but it actually did make the game easier, despite the developers thinking that cTele made escape too easy.

More randarts are unusable than before due to the negative properties. Due to the diminishing returns on stats, even a ring of dex+10 is worth like 4-5 EV.

It didn't, the correct play was just to assume every enemy weapon was distortion or electrocution on the off chance that it actually was a weapon of distortion or electrocution. Doing this gets annoying after about the 500th time, so eventually distortion will get you. Perfect example of fake difficulty, something you're supposed to do but it's so boring that you don't, and then something bad happens.

I haven't played Pakellas but I doubt he's better than Trog or Fedhas and the mid-late game was trivial without evokables anyway.

Actually, inventory management is difficulty. It forces you to make decisions on what items you actually need, so you can't just have some sort of infinite bag of holding with all of the shit you want on you at once. Will you need this armor or another set? What potions will you take or leave behind? What items? These are questions that force you to think about the dangers still ahead and pick the items you think you will need.
