Merit is purely for commanders.

the 180 packs have the same chance at commanders as the 10 at a time packs (Gold versions has better chance at higher ranked commanders.. but merit version is same as 1 at a time.)

Get a DD, get commanders for speed, enjoy the fast. Become a honey badger of the seas.
The captain system is complicated but extremely powerful. Its also the longest grind in game. All captains are swappable between ships of all nations and tiers and classes. All captains are aquired with merit or gold. There are about 5-6 captains you can get with merit that cost more than others for a guaranteed result. The rest is a gacha style RNG drop. With duplicate captains giving you qualification points to upgrade what captains you have to higher tiers.

Hopefully french will be the next nation

You mean ship speed? Could get a ship beyond 40 knots, but speed is pretty subjective..

I've heard the commanders described in terms of mobage, you have to roll for new ones and some are pretty rare, failed rolls give you points to upgrade your current commanders with but it takes a lot of points, I prefer the system to wargaming because they're shared between ships and they're more interesting to minmax. Some of the effects are pretty strong but seem like they would take a looot of money to acquire, even with luck, so I doubt anyone will have them.

British DDs focus on guns and depthcharges. The tier 9 having 11 of them. The end game British DD is essentially a cruiser with its amount of firepower while having a very weak AA suite.

Burger DDs are the middle ground having a nice mix of both, but will lose in a straight up gunfight to British DDs but can defend themselves much easier against planes.

IJN DDs are torpedo and AA focused. They have good stealth, but their guns will start lacking quickly compared to Burger and british DDs.

Though thats not a bad thing, since there is spotting exp and assistance exp.
It is completely viable to sit on the outside of someone's view range and provide targeting data for BBs and CAs. This will net you large amounts of exp and make you 2nd or 1rst place on the scoreboards almost every time.

All DDs can bully submarines easily and ruin their damn day. Or CVs if they get close or BBs as well.

DDs are multirole assault recon that can do the job of every class except CVs.

AA matters a hell of a lot.
If you ignore AA you WILL die.
Almost every cruiser and BB has controllable scouts and shit. Even subs have controllable scouts. Hell the entire IJN sub line are submarine carriers.
If you want to ignore those and get spotted that's your death.

As a carrier, I am tempted to tell you that yes it is safe to ignore using your AA.. you'll be totally fine!

But since you're a part of VG.. AA matters, proper usage can and will save you.. it is definitely not a meme.. and if properly applied, can stop entire waves of attacks.

I've been playing mostly US subs (just unlocked the cachalot at tier IV) but keep wondering if German or jap would be better. I tried jap up until tier 2 or 3 but didn't like the mobility when other subs force a fight. Are German subs the best?

I actually had a game the other day in my Midway. We won against Dark Judge.
The fact is, at end game its going to be CA and CVs/BBs. Subs and DDs are going to be wildcards.
Nothing wrong with Ducky Pride Worldwide, but she wont be effective against a tier 10 battleship with support. Its just how it is.

You haven't faced a good British DD at tier 8/9 have you? Its guns shit all over IJN DDs. The only thing IJN DDs have on it stealth and AA.
At high tiers the main problem botes are DDs and Subs. British DDs fuck over subs and other DDs with metal spatulas.

The only downside is that British DDs have really bad AA, so they can be scouted relatively easily by CVs or BBs/CAs/Subs. With a team in unison though those downsides really don't matter.

How are the submarines in this game? Do they play much different from everything else? So far this game just feels like World of Tanks with botes, and I fucking hate World of Tanks.
Also are there any other game modes besides the goddamn neutral capture zone one? The stupid thing gets captured way too fast. I don't like seeing "VICTORY" or "DEFEAT" flash up on the screen with more than half of both fleets still up. I want to sail a bote and shoot at other botes, not sit in a circle like a faggot

Ramming in this game is based on displacement. What happened was that your ship had less displacement and size. If your ship is smaller you will do much less damage and probably die.
Also its why IJN subs are good at ramming. They are large subs with huge displacement. Their best strategy is often to ram enemy German and American subs. And they can often just surface and ram DDs above them because they are larger and will get the kill.

the furutaka is pretty fun. i'm currently grinding it and it seems to be a nice platform for dealing damage to BBs

but you'll get more focusing on CAs and CLs instead. you could try focusing DDs, but they're a bit hard to hit

I went with CL at tier 5 and I was dissapointed.

Considering how good CAs are higher I feel Aoba was a better choice.

And I was playing it run and gun back then so I probably did bad.

As a CL, you need to hit other CLs and DDs and submarines and the occasional CV. You simply do not have the firepower to effectively fight CAs and BBs.
You can wolfpack with other CLs and bury a BB or CA in munitions though.

Cl*** comparision from a DDfag point of view

On the average game you'll see BBs sticking far behind the clusterfuck zone (there are still some individuals going balls deep but don't think this is viable tactic when being alone). Considering they're the most blind cl*** (probably on par with subs) with massive range and best alpha damage from main guns they're kinda forced to play like this.
Talking about blindness, every BB has a safe 3.5km fuck you zone. That means once you enter that zone without any clue what the fuck is going on you'll end up dead in less than a minute. But outside of that zone BB is literally blind and cannot really see you. By writing "cannot really see you" I mean doing nothing just sitting still and just looking at him (you might want to look at concealment mechanics for more info because that's too much of explaining).
BBs are somehow forced to be a teamwork based cl*** because without any support (or being a dumb fuck and going solo everywhere) from other cl***es you wont perform to yours fullest potential and as you said, be a backbone of a team.
tl;dr: Dont you ever dare to go/stay alone or I find you and perform bukkake with torpedoes.

Literal counter to BBs, most of CAs and CVs if you're in a 1v1 situation then you might win. Rock, paper, scissor type of cl*** that can get fucked by anything with depth charges/torpedoes. They're that guy who peeks behind a corner last to see what is happening. Really struggle to spot anything even while surfaced and after submerging they struggle even more.
I don't want to talk too much about it because I might hurt feelings of some people. I hope some SS fags will expand this topic from their point of view.

Oh boy. I'm gonna keep this short because I want to sleep and DDs could be really a separate post. Eyes of the fleet, earliest counter to other DDs and also the most effective counter to them. Most mobile cl*** on the battlefield allowing them to be anywhere where needed. While being the cl*** with the best view range they also have the best concealment.
Mixing this two elements together (and using braincells), you are able to kill everything till out of ammo/death/loose/victory. Love your destroyers and they will love you back.

Dont forget commanders with 10 percent more damage, aiming power and penetration. With the right commanders the Atlanta is an absolute monster of a t4. Anything that's not a BB will get shredded quickly.

I assume it's the exact same as AP but with way lower pen and a bit more damage if it pens, so it could only be useful in gross overpenetration scenarios (bb vs dd).

In wot the system was, if AP doesn't penetrate, it does no damage. HE was AP but with way less penetration and a bit more damage if it does penetrate. And if it bounces, it did a bit of damage too, so it was mainly used if you can't penetrate at all, to at least scratch the other guy. Since AP also has that effect here, I don't see a reason to use HE.

For BB's against DD's(Some CL's) under you, it aint bad. But for most ships against most ships, it is a little too risky in my opinion

That is: Better to get ensured/likely damage vs chance to deal 'more' but also a likely chance to deal less against more armoured targets.
Speculations:It would seem HE also has a better chance to deal module damage/crits should it pen. I believe HE as a whole is still a work in progress

I believe it can also start fires but have not used them often enough as non-BB to provide information.

Just had an atlanta vs atlanta duel where I did 140 with HE vs 80 with AP. And got fairly reliable pens since he was being all "lmao full broadside for max deeps".
