I actually don't like the direction they are taking Vahlen in xcom2. Making her into some generic psychotic scientist doesn't actually mesh with her original character at all. She never does her praise lines for successful missions unless all of your soldiers make it home and specifically has lines about being surprised how callous the aliens are and being genuinely shocked by the first terror attack. This is another one of those cases where the typical XCOM MAY MAYS ("break los", "assaults w/ arc thrower") will just hurt your play.

Give your snipers Ghost Armor when you get it, not Archangel, and keep them low on the map. LOS bugs and generally poor design means that usually, it'll be easier to get LOS on enemies from the same level than one above.

Don't be afraid to move your snipers around; the Overwatch Bug can be abused to let them move and go on overwatch, and enemies will freely move if they don't know they're being overwatched from outside their own sight range, scoring hits from your sniper between turns, pretty much every turn.

Don't try to set up ITZ chain shots by flanking, it'll take too long. Just rocket/grenade things to soften them and remove cover, and then take the shots with your sniper. Double Tap sucks and is useless and gay compared to ITZ. It doesn't even work half the time.

About Supports i agree a bit, In EW they had only Smoke and Healthpacks, but if you get not wounded during a mission this was a useless ability.
The biggest advantage of the specialist is, that his drone-actions only use one action point, so he can hack/heal/buff and than shoot in the same turn, this is awesome.

I don't think Assaults are so awesome in EW.
The problem is, that they can only kill one opponent at a time, and "run and gun" is too important for them. The Ranger can always run and gun with his sword and one talent give him the ability to move again, a other one to get another turn after a swordkill. So you chain up kills after kills and destroy whole groups.

But ok, the Ranger stealth tree don't look very impressive yet, i hope we will see more soon.

The Ranger have something like Lightning Reflexes. He get a new ability where his movement don't trigger any amount of overwatches.

It just refers to hiding behind high cover objects so aliens can't see you or move and see you. When aliens can't see any of your troops, their AI acts a bit wonky. I'm pretty sure it is true. I don't think they react to overwatch out of sight range because they don't think it can hit them. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not. Also, aliens will usually refuse to move into positions that would flank themselves if someone could immediately shoot at that position. They can't do this unless they know at least somewhat where troops are out of los. They usually know where all of your troops could shoot in the immediate moment without moving.

In LW they have the best psi progression in the game and free medkits + support grenades are a great load out. You should never use their gun when they get to a decent level.

You can make great LW medics with high will, decent mobility troops that are useless for anything else because they don't take fire or shoot their gun. They psi buff and debuff or do the same with support grenades. When your guys get hurt they can heal even with a full loadout of support grenades.

On the strategic side, everything should be geared towards getting satellites. That means always going for rewards that give engineers. Always. At all times. You need to be pumping out satellites and the sat control buildings as fast as possible. If you have to sell loot on the gray market to do it, then go for it. Satelites are the only consistent way to manage panic, so pump out as many as you can for your sat limit and then launch them at the end of the month on countries that are maxed on panic. For research go for lasers then carapace.

As far as the tactical game goes, make sure to move one person and then have everyone follow directly behind them (congo line). This is too make sure that you only activate pods with your first soldier and have everyone else ready to react. Overwatch when no aliens are activate. Abuse explosives as much as you need to to keep people alive. Half cover is only for hunkering or getting flank shots on the only remaining active alien. Even then its risky. Stick to high cover at all times. Train up a sniper as soon as possible. They suck in the beginning but ramp up to insane 100% accurate death machines. Meld is nice, but never blindly rush towards it. You can replace troops, but you really can't afford to drop missions.

The airgame is somewhat fun in OG XCOM and it's a ridiculously easy way to simulate that aspect. Why the fuck do they strip away the good stuff and give us shitloads of customization that will get stale real fast? I just want more XCOM strategy but instead we get none. The game is heading toward purely tactical with a railroaded strategy layer where you work your way to plasma, fucking boring.

The airgame could be oldschool style or an option to RNG also, it would make it so much better add in drone spying/surveillance.

I also don't want a sim but they didn't need to dumb down more with that stuff since it's PC exclusive and has a huge potential for adding fun parts of the game like this. I really hope the loot system doesn't fall flat, seems like some items are just OP and they couldn't think of new things to add, even though this aspect might be fixed with a decent loot expansion mod.

In the first 2/3 months you will die a lot in Classic, as soon you get Carapace Armor and colonel ranked soldiers, everything will become a breeze. Always choose alien abductions missions giving you new soldiers

Just go real slow. Don't fucking ever dash on a unit's first move and always make sure you're fighting the smallest number of ayys possible at any one time.

If you're already engaged don't go anywhere near undiscovered territory. And keep your dudes in supporting positions to cover each other; you'll be punished way harder if anyone is caught out alone and 2+ ayys decide to focus on them.

Break LOS is a shitty meme, but it does help sometimes. Typically when a scout or someone activates a pod. Don't just hunker down and fight, get him the hell back to the team or behind a 3 wide wall.

I just finished it with greenfog, red fog, itchy trigger, war weariness, diminishing returns, hidden trees and hidden potential on and training roulette on. It was on brutal ironman not impossible ironman though.

Two shotguns are sufficient, the key is engineers with AP grenades. Even eight shotguns can't deal with a double chryssalid pod, everyone having AP on the other hand can.

I do two engineers with shotguns, one infantry with BR to kill thin mints/seekers, a scout and a mix of rookies and other people I want to level. Everyone carries AP grenades, engineers can also carry a frag. Even the worst pod can be removed with 2 APs and 2-3 rifle shots.

I think Hangars have storage space value. If you don't want to have it in there you have to put in storage value and set it to zero. Someone told me a few threads ago but I forgot. Go to openxcom/ufo/ruleset and find Xcom1ruleset.rul (or similar) Scroll down until you find STR_HANGAR and add storage: 0 after monthly cost. This totally might not fix it because I haven't had a chance to test it yet. I'll let you know if I figure it out.

If you leave someone in cover with enemies visible, they're taking a bunch of damage, that's it that's all. I'm not willing to believe you even completed the game on Easy, since you'd know that enemies have plenty of options for tearing your guys to pieces when they can't get a conventional shot.

As the other guy said, its a mod for openxcom. They are excellent because they cost the same as a regular troop, but come with 70 reactions and 70 time units standard so they make excellent attacks. Plus they can still maul lightly armored aliens to death.

You should really consider picking it up with openxcom. It fixes bugs, difficulties work properly, active modding community, UI improvements, its pretty nice.

It would be pretty simple to make work, actually. Instead of having soldiers have aribitary defense values, make them actually able to be struck as NPCs with ragdolls/models. Then, putting a soldier into "Half Cover" doesn't mean "-20 to enemy Aim when trying to hit you" but "Use the low crouching animation next to this object". So objects actually low or permeable enough that they're not really cover (planters, benches, hatchback doors, etc) will be likelier to be hit through than objects that are solid and high, but not full height (concrete weights, parking barriers, hot hatch engine blocks, etc)

Likewise, full cover means "stand up but peek out occasionally", so it would actually stop most shots but still provide vision out. Unless you're unlucky and your character peeks out just to catch a bolt of plasma to the face.

The problem is that the odds of actually getting a hit on something well in cover are massively low unless someone's peeking, which isn't a problem in real life because you can choose when to shoot but in this game you'd just be wasting ammo until you get a flank. It would be Long War cover bonuses on steroids.

UFO Defense/TFTD basically worked like this. If you were crouching, the area that counted as a hit was actually smaller, and things like low walls and hay bales and such would generally stop plasma shots and protect you just fine if you were crouched.

In fact, it's a huge source of frustration that your shots originate slightly lower, and you can't shoot over shit like haybales and low fences when crouched

Yes, but that firefight also usually takes place at ~200 meters. XCOM has always been a sort of over the top representation of combat with it always being close quarters, but the new ones just settle it. Well yeah obvs you can have different properties for different rounds. An AR shouldn't kill someone as fast as a sniper just for game balance reasons, let alone realism of .223 vs .50 hitting a guy. And yes, DR should be a thing instead of binary "Did Hit/Did Not Hit" and "Did Crit/Did Not Crit". I'm pretty sure crit rolls are separate from hit rolls in XCOM, and affect cover destruction.

The more I read about people playing XCOM, the more it seems like people actually don't mind letting their guys get hit and dying and shit. Honestly, the cover system is probably the worst part of this game because sometimes it's just dumb/doesn't work/doesn't make any loving sense. I had two guys on one side of a door and when I opened it a Berserker and Muton were right there. The berserker charges in the door so I get a CC proc and a Headshot crit to take him down. The Muton has taken cover on the other side of the door. I have my Major Assault just walk outside so she's on the same side as the Muton.

The assault has an alloy cannon and takes aim...45%. What? How the gently caress does he still have heavy cover? So I Run and Gun, put her behind the Muton and do a 98% chance Rapid Fire just in case.

All in all it makes me wish there was a set of rules that got rid of cover as such an absolute.

Observations on long war having started playing a few days ago

Weapon and class variation is awesome, adds tons of variety to the game.

UFOs being harder to shoot down makes them a more credible threat, making interceptions a riskier proposition, which is good

Fatigue is some serious artificial bullshit. Soldiers don't take mini-breaks to Cornwall just to get over one firefight. The longer wound time is fine, but make it a day or two at most.

The VR training addon should come standard. What are the stable of rookies doing all day, jerking off?

The enemies get really tiresome to deal with. The early days of sectoids and thinmen were thrilling, but the massive HP bars hanging off of later enemies is awful.

Resources are much too fucking scarce for the density of enemies thrown in.

Before I'm told to just edit the inis, I just want to say that it feels like the developer of the game is tacking on difficulty for difficulty's sake without adding much more depth. I will need to tweak this to more reasonable levels, so I guess I just couldn't git gud enough.

It's the DLC quest line, Portent. From it, you get Annette and the Furies, which make up a total of four very very strong Psionic soldiers. You also get the rewards from a landed large UFO.

the way I look at it is any combat team will slowly degrade in performance if in the field too long, you can still take a fatigued trooper out but then they need even longer time to get R&R. I'll fully admit the time is too long though.

Well snipers are actually excellent but they start out as your worst soldier. Snipers quickly get to 100% vs targest with no cvoer (pair with heavies for cover removal) and then 100% shots at all time. Combine that with disabling shot and opportunist and they are already really strong mid game. Then you get them max ranked and they kill everything small instantly (in the zone) or can start one shotting even big enemies from miles away (doubletap).

My last sniper from an inronman classic campaign for reference I have training roulette on, standard perks are actually better

Double Tap, much like Combat Drugs, does not actually work. ITZ is better in 100% of cases, because Double Tap is fucking broken and does not actually ever trigger.

Litearally 1. All the time. Unless you have Damage Roulette and/or Absolutely Critical on, it does 1 damage.

It only does 1 damage because on-hit effects are so buggy that they cannot be applied except through damage. Even Suppression. Using SHIV Suppression at close range reveals that it's a 0 damage strike. It will ALWAYS show a 0 damage pop-up if any projectiles strike the enemy.

If you do any action other than basic fire, they lose their second shot the perk description specifically includes Disabling Shot and Headshot

Meanwhile, ITZ triggers on any kill, including with a pistol. With a pistol, you're only supposed to get a second standard shot with a pistol, but it's any one move, including dashes, sniper rifle shots, grapples, and any item usages.

ITZ is literally always better.

Even by design, ITZ is better because rockets exist and sniper rifle shots break cover 99% of the time anyway, so any flanking hit will probably open up another enemy to being exposed if you line it up properly instead of being a fucking moron who is terrible at everything.

Oh, I forgot to say, if you get a pistol ITZ kill and then follow it up with a sniper shot, you can continue your murder chain.

And snipers do LPR damage in the endgame, which means up to a 10 damage pistol shot on a move triggering a chain of up to 30 (!) damage shots from the rifle on exposed targets thereafter.

Those don't sound like reasons why the skill is mechanically broken or "doesn't work". Those sound like reasons why you don't know how the game works.

Double Tap desc:

If you use anything but basic Fire (standard shot) Double Tap is lost and will not trigger. using it with a pistol will also not trigger the Double Tap state.

If you ever take Double Tap you are wasting a perk. It's not even like Battle Scanner vs Disabling Shot where you're opening up a lot of bugs that can ultimately be worked around and make up for the increased tactical awareness; Double Tap straight up does not work. Just like Combat Drugs, which END THE TURN AND CONVER ZERO BENEFITS OR EVEN A DUMMY PERK WITH NO BENEFITS. NOTHING HAPPENS EXCEPT A WASTED TURN.

It is especially effective against sectopds to give you more time to deal with them. (chaining with emp gives your two turns of a not shooting mechanical unit)

And rest assured, if your playing Enemy within and your game is not literally broken, doubletap lets you shoot twice, including using shots like disabling shot and headshot. Unfortuately there is alot of unsound claims and bait being thrown around.

It is literally uselsess except for captures. Give it to your first ever sniper and that's it. Once you're farming people for psi or whatever, take scanners instead. Even for arresting ayys, it's pretty useless, since it's so easy to break enemy AI and make them do nothing for a turn.

Nope. It only works on two uses of the basic Fire command, and only if you don't tab away from the sniper between those commands. If you fire once, then tab away to, say, consider your options or see if anyone has a new shot based on destroyed objects or whatever, fuck you. Double Tap is lost. Take ITZ instead. It is better in ALL cases, since any pistol kill will trigger it, even through cover.

Gunslinger is +2 to damage.

Pistols never do less than 3 damage, at least on average.

Rapid Fire does +100% damage to pistols (2 shots = 2x the damage) if you're not a shitter who can position your dudes properly.

in addition, Run and Gun lets you position people better to get those two solid shots. Assaults also gain more mobility overall than Snipers as they level up.

SHIVs are a fallback for when you're playing the game wrong: losing experienced soldiers faster than you can replace them or not doing proper roster rotation so you find yourself with only a half-subpar team if your main gets disabled due to death/injury. If you're playing properly you'll find them pointless, mostly because during the time period they could conceivably be useful (early game when you have just a couple rank 3 soldiers at most) they're too much of a resource and time sink that would be better served in other projects.

There's a case lategame for grav shivs in terror missions, since they're a fast and ultimately expendable way to grab civvies, but other than that your assertion is correct that soldiers are just so much better.
