I have so much stuff to proofread and it's boring and I hate it but I MUST GO ON.
I have a habit of overusing words/phrases like 'however', 'since', 'given that', 'certainly', 'surely', etc, to hell, and a lot of my editing is just cutting down on all of this.
>>
>>126525658
Also making all characters end their sentences with 'right?' or 'you know?', this is another big thing I keep doing which is starting to get on my nerves.
I blame Ryukishi.

Do any other writers have annoying words/phrases they keep using/over-using in their stories, that they only notice when they read through it again?

Never seen this shit. I ain't a sprite guy. But I'm using characters that weren't in Academy so I can't really use sprites anyway.
>>
>>126525753
I have a stupid tendency of making characters look at each other with no particular reasoning behind it. "Character X regarded character Y for a moment" and stuff like that. It'd probably be barely noticeable for a reader, but it does my head in whenever I go back over a draft and see it there with no purpose.

Thanks dudes, price sbetween bg artists differ wildly so I wasn't sure.
Yeah, I've changed the angle a bit so it looks better as a single picture, trying to build a portfolio now. Here's another one I'm working on, I have a bunch more but they are for a project that may yet somehow get finished so I probably shouldn't post stuff without their permission.
>>
>>126527769
That looks really, really good. I'd say you could probably charge more to be honest...

Not the guys that replied earlier, but this looks better than the mart in the sense that it has more small mundane objects in it. The mart pic looks almost too sterile. I'd pay $70 for the lab with no second thoughts.

Set a level for your skill($), then multiply that by how many hours it takes you to finish a piece on average. For example if I were making BGs of pic related quality, I would set my rate at $40~ per hour, then it would probably take me around 10-12 hours. $400-480.

In the end it's about supply and demand though, really. If you get lots of people coming to you and your services are in demand, raise your prices then take the jobs offered by people willing to match your prices. Rinse and repeat every time you feel like you're getting enough commissions/your skill level has increased enough to justify raising your prices.

Right now, your colouring and composition is easily on a level to charge $100. In fact I think you could charge way more. I'd only recommend looking at a bunch of visual novels, along with their sprites, to figure out how to implement a proper perspective. With the BGs you've posted, it would feel like the MC and on-screen sprites are freakishly tall. Once you have that down, you'll be able to charge top (relative to VNs) tier and get clients easy.

>Do any other writers have annoying words/phrases they keep using/over-using in their stories, that they only notice when they read through it again?
Yeah, all the time. I wouldn't worry about it for the first draft, it's easy enough to fix in editing.
I get the reverse sometimes, where I feel like I've been using a phrase/word too much and ctrl-f it to find that I've not even used it once.
On a similar note, what about avoiding starting consecutive sentences with the same word/letter? I try to do so if I can help it. Worst times is when, say, three lines all start with "I" in a row. I know the reader probably doesn't notice or care but it feels so wrong that I force myself to reword things.

For a "thank you for playing" CG unlockable after completing a VN, would a group image of all the heroines plus MC or 3 separate images of the three heroines with the MC be preferable? I'd appreciate responses:

>>
>>126529518
>$400-480
No one is going to pay you that. It's a landscape painting for a damn visual novel, not AAA game concept pieces.
>>
>>126536335
What you think you're worth does have to contrast with what people are actually willing to pay you, or you'll need to look elsewhere for your employment.

Maybe your skill level is high enough that you think you are charging fairly at $400 for a background. But NO ONE in the EVN market, not even the rich buggers, is going to pay it. You will have to peddle your skills to individual one-off commissions (and that's tough at high rates unless you are a known name) or try to approach big companies with massive budgets.

Or you could just be using your high price as a way of saying "I fucking hate painting backgrounds, but if you bribe me THIS much, then..." and therefore safely ensuring that nobody asks you to do it.
>>
>>126546884
I like group shots more.
>>

Just gives off a feeling of completion and makes for a nicer picture usually. Bonus points for a scene of cast members doing something together (if applicable).

Happy group images are rarer within the games themselves, where we're more likely to already have a nice pic of the main character with each individual girl.

That would depend on the routes in my opinion. If you get one heroine, but then have a thanks for playing with all 3 in it, it might be a little odd. Likewise, if it's a single route, or there are routes unrelated to a specific heroine's ending, it would be weird to have only that one heroine show up in the image.

Ooh, this really bugs me - when you have lots of sentences that start w/ the same word, and sometimes same letter ('I' being the primary offender in 1st person VNs).
I never worry about overusing words/phrases in my draft, I tend to draft stuff up very, very quickly and just kind of... vomit up words all over the page, haha. But that's why, when I come to editing, it takes forever, and I have lots and lots and lots of stuff to edit. I spend ages restructuring sentences and nitpicking about word usage and stuff, because I'm so lax when I do my first drafts.

Which EVN (in the first person) has the best prose/writing?
>>
>>126557547
Katawa shoujo
>>
>>126549745

Because it captures the work as a whole more than other alternatives. A large part of what makes characters work is their relationship to other characters-- so a group image can capture the dynamic or give them an in context presentation rather than isolated.

>>126539670

It's the same as any art-- objective technicals and subjective style. Art is not some fluffy entirely subjective experience-- almost every form has technicals. For visual art, it can be perspective, anatomy, grasp of form, proportions, composition etc. For writing it is diction, syntax, figurative language, wordplay, theme, voice, use of other techniques,

Comparable skill is best determined by looking at the execution of the technical portion and then the maturity/nuance/depth of the subjective portion.
>>
>>126557901
Serious or joking?
>>
>>126557547
best at pulling off a fancy prose style, Juniper's Knot or The Royal Trap. best at writing in terms of theme and structure to support it, That Cheap and Sacred Thing.
>>
>>126557547
I'd probably say... Something like The Royal Trap. I think Hanako Games stuff has strong writing in general. It's nothing special, but it's competent and information is conveyed very clearly.

Actually, I really, really liked the Rin route in Katawa Shoujo. I think that is probably my favorite eg of writing in an EVN - I liked all the similes and how weird Rin was as a character, and how angsty it became. The writing in the rest of Katawa Shoujo is also decent, but a bit too cliche and just generally uninteresting (I'm mainly looking at Emi's route here).

I'm not that anon but I'm happy as my requests don't sound so out there compared to that. I'm creating a yuri vn with a Rance like MC.
>>
>>126560109
Cause other routes have a lot of stock cliche stuff in them: the overblown confession in Lily's route, the way it ends where it tries to trick you into thinking she left when lolnope ofc not, the drama about Emi's dad and the fact Hisao is too dense to realize what happened though it's blatantly obvious, the weird loud anime-y comic relief dad in Shizune's route, and her shota crossdressing little brother, Hanako's entire personality...

I think Rin's route is easily the least cliche - at least, if we're talking cliches that are usually found in VNs. As a character, she's the one that least fits into a popular JVN stereotype (Emi = genki girl, Hanako = shy girl, Lily = ojou-sama... I guess Shizune is also a bit different to stock, being so confident and headstrong), and Rin just seemed like the most believable out of all of the characters. Or, maybe not believable, but it felt like more thought/effort was put into her personality and fleshing her out than the others.
>>
>>126561284
I will never get over shizune's route going from the most well written of act 1 to going to complete ass when the full route was finally released. Also I personally found the whole lesbian crush thing completely ham handed. I wanted to comfort misha, NOT STICK MY DICK IN HER.
>>
>>126561537
Men and women can never be completely platonic friends, not even in vn's. You either stick your dick into them or they're invisible and don't matter. If your going to comfort a woman, you better believe it's gonna be with your dick.

also huniepop is more likely to be LPed than a VN, since it has gameplay elements, so it's probably slightly easier to make an interesting vid? I imagine really slow, lowkey, gloomy KNs would be harder to do entertaining LPs of since the audience would get bored.

>>
>>126568249
give us both options to play through!

i know nothing of real-world submission although I expect in the real world they want to submit anyway so you're not really making them. effective fictional breaking scenes usually like to mix up the stimuli. you need to give them suffering but you also need to provide pleasure, and with a big reward waiting for them when they give in.

beating someone's ass until they scream for you to stop has only the limited reward of 'stopping'. keeping someone on edge and denying them that relief has a bigger reward factor after they swear they'll do anything you say.
>>
>>126567389
It's a mix, and most youtube LPs are really slow, so many people who are willing to buy games, but hadn't previously heard of the title, get interested and go buy the thing instead of waiting for the LPer to finish.

people who already know about the game are less likely to be won over and more likely to keep watching someone else play and save them the effort/shekels
>>
>>126570187
I wish I could but I have a limited budget which means 3 CG's per heroine only, and having a spanking scene without the appropriate sprite/CG to accompany it is pretty pointless.

In this scenario the submission is forced as its being delivered as punishment. The 'reward' in this scene is them stopping. I do want it to end in them pissing all over themselves just to add to the humiliation.
>>
wake up..
>>
>>126571039
Would a solid ass-beating really make you piss yourself? That sounds more likely to be an issue with some tickle-related torture, which orgasm denial might count as.

Or maybe if you've been getting your butt spanked into a tomato, when it all stops and you hang limp and sore and with your skin on fire, you can't help relaxing with exhaustion and that makes you pee?
>>

>>126571039
If they have a very low pain tolerance, then spanking could work. If the one spanking them acts as if they have stopped, then suddenly whacks them very hard, they can piss themselves out of surprise. Or out of nervousness or fear. The pressure of being bent over (assuming they are over the knee) could also add to them having to pee.

You'd better at least try and if you can't, don't do it, because there was a group that did the exact same thing with background art from a game and they got busted and raked over the coals.

There's also a LOT more VNs that use royalty free music than that.

It's not like it would to hurt their bottom line - who knows if they're even still selling the game at all.

Could you at least post the artist names or galleries? It'd be helpful to see multiple examples of their work to see their consistency. Also $1100 looks like the shittiest either way, I'd toss them out of the running.

>>126652061
It's kind of hard for us to decide if we can't see. 390's a pretty bad example to showcase their art. I would probably go with 975.

>>126652293
I'm not even a dev.
>>
>>126652364
I should clarify I don't mean 390's art looks bad, but that I can't judge the art I'd like for an eroge from a picture where I can barely see the woman's body.
>>
>>126651356

Wouldn't give 1100 a second thought. That sample looks like crap and if they have moral qualms with the work you want it's likely not worth pursuing, especially at that price.

The other three seem like decent options. 910 has a shitty background but seems more competent than the rest in most other areas (hardly seems fair to judge them on that when 975 didn't even attempt a background).

975 is the strongest at rendering/color, but I think 910 has the best linework/anatomy. Personally, I feel like strong base art is more important (you could always theoretically hire another colorist and only have the artist do line art if their coloring isn't up to snuff, but if you hire an artist who is good at rendering but has issues with anatomy/lines you could run into trouble)

I'd definitely go with 975, but 390's not bad if you're not willing to swing that high.

Don't have any images but I went back in the archives and here's what he had to say just in general:
> took them 3 months to deliver 5 pieces of cg. the worst thing they did was use one of the references I gave them as a CG's background and then have the balls to charge me full price ($240) for it after literally all they did was draw to characters from the waist up. the original artist we were assigned did good work (they assigned us a new one because he was being slow), but we were treated like dirt despite paying 1.2k. part of the reason we even sought them out was our desire to work with someone that could be professional, and they were by far the least professional of anyone that touched the project.

>1. They dicked around for 3 months. Had nothing to show but sketches in August when we started working with them in May.
>2. They used a reference image as part of a background in one of our CGs after I specifically said it was a reference, and then acted like they were entitled to be paid the full 240 per CG despite only drawing the foreground.
>3. They were unprofessional in our email communications. They also wouldn't let us contact the artists directly, which led to several redraws.
>4. Some of the backgrounds they submitted were admittedly excellent, but a lot of the CGs (especially the foreground characters) were rushed and shitty work.

I'm not sure if you're talking about me or if there's another bestiality anon around here, but what I'm doing won't be TOO horrible or anything. Sure there'll be loli, incest and bestiality, but any forced sex won't be overly violent. There won't be any blood, screaming, crying or any excessive pain or misery. It'll just be sex they didn't really want, but is brushed off somewhat and doesn't cause a massive amount of distress. Play your cards right and they may end up liking it, or you can fail and you get caught, or something worse, and you get a game over.

As nice as these backgrounds are, one of my biggest pet peeves with VNs is have backgrounds and sprites that don't mesh well either in style, quality, or both. You'd have to have some pretty impressive sprites of a certain style in order to measure up to backgrounds like these. You can't just slap any sprite you already have on there and think it's ok because the quality of the background will compensate, or if both the sprite and background look great, but in very different ways. It makes things even more jarring.
In my opinion.

Unfunny slapstick comedy and slice of life eating scenes that last about 150k words before it segues suddenly and abruptly into OHSOSAD ridiculous melodrama. Neither halves of the story are very cohesive, and I'm sure the comedy is meant to function as a means of 'lulling you in' to a false sense of security before the drama hits so it hurts more, but since I find Key's comedy irritating it does nothing for me.

I really don't get why people like Key so much, they're one company I'll always avoid because their stories are always overlong and they always, always, always do this (excepting Planetarian). I have honestly read EVNs I think are better/more enjoyable than Key's stuff. I think Christine Love's stuff is easily superior to Key, and I think Katawa Shoujo (event hough it was inspired by Key stuff to begin with) is a lot better, too.

Imo Key are one of the most overrated VN companies ever, their stories are just so dull and tedious and predictable.

I'm no fan of Key either, but you seem like a very unpleasant person.

They have a terrible reputation. Some of their artists are good, but the general consensus is that they price gouge their customers.

But why should I read VNs by a company whose stuff I don't like? I tried reading Rewrite but just found it dull, their stuff is not for me.

>>126711304
Because I don't like Key's VNs? OK, sure...
People will always dislike things for various reasons, why should disliking something (with valid reasons - at least, they're valid to me) make you an unpleasant person? And it's not like my opinion is going to stop Key from being very successful, or a lot of people from loving their work, I don't see why it matters.

Throwing out an idea here: what do y'all think about a high fantasy story reworked into a high school setting sort of like what Brick did with noir

Bernie-chan would watch and cry off to the side

Not as good as a high fantasy story.
