That first bit with the night market felt more alive and atmosphereic than just about any other "sandbox" GTA clone I've played. Honestly, I'd be fine with an entire game set in a packed area like that. You might have a few bikes or scooters, but it's otherwise just wall-to-wall people and chasing thugs down narrow alleyways.

The rest of the city had a few memorable places, but the game really stood out when it full Hong Kong mode.

You can add on top of most reasons that it was a huge surprise hit for 2012 and was released in the Summer rather than fall.

True Crime was at best good. But that's it.
It was never great. It was just good. But in an era of GTA clones, it didn't rise above or do anything spectacular.

Even movie games like The Godfather and Scarface were better.

As you know, AAA games are very formulaic. That Sleeping Dogs came out at all and was successful is an outlier, and not looked at when it comes to AAA development. There's this neat text-adventure game made by two writers in the industry that shows what it's like behind closed doors. It's called "The Writer Will Do Something," and it's primarily about the dilemma of fusing script and gameplay/setpieces together. It's a wonderful insight, and how outliers like Dark Souls, Sleeping Dogs, Spec Ops, stray too far from the accepted money making formulas which greatly affects deadlines, milestones, how the narrative is written, etc. I strongly recommend everyone go through it.
