perfect example right here
his character is not defined by him being black, this role could be filled by any colored skin.
He is just a cool space cowboy/bounty hunter
>>360975221
He never steals or acts like a nigger. At the very end of the game, you find out he's been stealing from everyone else the whole game in a myriad of ways, from directly pickpocketing to taking things and saying they must have got lost to robbing people that you killed instead of giving you your rightful loot to running a ponzi scheme. He has no regrets. When you kill him, his mom cries on twitter about how he dindu nuffin and he was a good boy trying to get his life back on track.

Keep race foremost in mind and try your hardest to counter every single racial stereotype through characterization. Do method exercises like picking cotton for 8 hours a day to get into the mindset of a black person.

By making the game in a time period where racial tension and the right wing aren't on the rise. There's literally no problem with the current games who have black protagonists and everyone would agree on that if those game's would have been made 10 years earlier.
But since it is 2016 shitting on any game with a black MC is mandatory.

Design the character around a white character.
At the very last minute switch out the model of a black guy.

It's impossible. White skin is just boring and it bleeds into every other part of a person. That's why the expression "white bread" means bland and boring.
just make it believable

>b-but muh stereotypes
stereotypes develop for a reason, and usually provide a pretty accurate generalisation of the subject at hand
trying to avoid them means trying to avoid reality itself, which usually results in grotesque or inconsistent characters

Well start off by getting a good writer who wants to write a black character well and not some trust-fund baby who thinks he's obligated to do it out of their white guilt.
That's a good start.

Franklin the guy with zero flaws, acts as the reasonable member of the trio. Purposefully made the least unlikeable person in the game.
Hes the epitome of modern black character writing in games/movies.
I know it's an unpopular opinion here by people who haven't played it, but Marcus from Watch Dogs 2 is about the closest thing to a realistic, non-obnoxious black person I've seen in a video game.
>>360977696
Not really, no. Not all blacks are walking stereotypes, you know.

Also, isn't he basically the opposite of CJ? Unless, I blatantly missed the point of his character.
>>360977039
Franklin is a bitch ass nigga.
Also, nigga > dog.
>>360975039
You just posted it, OP.
It's Carlton.
Lee Everett. I guess you could say he's stereotyped because he is a convicted criminal, but he was also a fucking history professor at a university and came from a well off family (I'm guessing here, based on the fact they own a pharmacy). Maybe it's because you play as him, but I think Lee was my favorite character in both seasons of TWD.

>>360980120
Does he have any character traits a middle class university educated white guy wouldnt have?
>>360979992
They're really similar, but CJ ends up caring more about family and friends. Franklin winds up basically alone because he prioritizes material wealth. CJ changes his attitude because he learns from losing friends and family, whereas Franklin retreats deeper into his new career as a professional criminal as an escape from his friends and family.

After playing the full game, I can tell you that there are examples on both sides of the political spectrum that the game mocks, and I'd say it leans more center-right than SJW left.
As for that example, that's the only time really where a character bitches about "woe is me I'm black and underrepresented", and it's not even the main character, AND in the very next mission he gets murdered by, surprise, other minorities.

What are "black traits"? That's the problem with making black/minority characters. If it has common traits associated with the race, then it's a stereotype or caricature. If the person doesn't have any common traits with the race, then it's just a white person with a different skin tone. You can't have it both ways.
>>360980759
What about the villain who's basically an SJW wet dream?
>>360980797NOUGH
Even if your black character exist in a world not based on Earth, in a land where no one would have any sort of racial tension, and the character himself is some super rich noble, be sure to include some hamfisted backstory in which he was looked won on for being black.

The same way you make any other character. Include some details about how their race/culture shaped them. Maybe the white character feels uncomfortable with casual sex because they grew up as a protestant christian. Maybe the white character feels uncomfortable talking about race because they were raised being told to not be racist at all costs. Maybe they like Irish food a lot because they're great-grandfather was supposedly from Ireland and they want to cling to the idea of some kind of heritage. Those traits don't define the character, but they provide opportunities for the character to demonstrate how they think/act. What happens when someone says something offensive to them? How strongly do they cling to their beliefs in the face of argument? How do they act when forced to give up something of sentimental value?
Good characterization comes from the "how" and "why" they do anything, rather than "what" they are. A character that's an alien with magic powers is still going to be super fucking boring if you can't relay why they act a certain way.

It's... a villain? I'm not sure how to portray something as negative worse than making them the literal bad guy. I'm assuming you're talking about fat dyke, in which case it's also worth adding that she's portrayed as a bumbling idiot who gets disproportionately upset to the point where it's childlike if things don't go her way.

There are tons of people like that in real life, who are called stuff like oreos/coconuts/bananas,etc. People don't have to live up to their race's stereotypes to officially be that race.
