Would you consider CIV 5 or XCOM casual games?
>>
>>324295537
Yeah
>>
>>324295537
civ is casual as fuck, XCOM requires autism tier determination to play through on non-baby mode.
>>
>>324295537
no
>>
Civ5 is.
XCom isn't.
>>
nope
>>
What is meant by 'casual'?

Do you mean 'easy'?
Do you mean 'simple'?
Both?
Something else?
>>
>>324295791
>>324295642
these two
>>
>>324295642

>Autism-tier

Spoken like someone isn't good at xcom and calls everyone who is an autist.

The game isn't hard. Learn about flanks, win.
>>
>>324295537
What about Endless Legend?
>>
How is Civ 5 casual when the average match takes like 20 hours?
>>
>>324295537
from a gamer's view point yes
from a non-gamer's view point no.

imagine your little sibling or parents trying it out for the first time. mario party is casual, civ is not
>>
>>324295884
Something a casual would play. Think only plays Xbox level of person. A normal person can't play Xcom because it would be too hard. A normal person also can't play Civ V because games last way too long
>>
>>324295985
This. Does casual just mean easy or not complicated? There's not a single casual out there who would play an entire game of civ.
>>
>>324295961
I found Endless Legend to be easier than Civ 5.
>>
new xcom is casual af
>>
>>324295537
both are objectively pretty easy and are literally the entry points to their respective series for new players. although, the XCOMs genre is pretty much dead now so that doesn't matter.

so yeah it's about as casual as those genres become. that doesn't mean
>>
>>324296021
That was kind of going to be my point. Civ games take many many hours, it's hardly a game you can just pick up and put down whenever. Even if it's not very difficult to complete, it just takes a long time.
>>
>>324295985
Also too many different parts and nuances. The average person would look at the game and just close it because there's too much shit going on.
>>
>>324295884
Casual meaning 'something /v/ doesn't like', much like /pol/ uses the term 'Jew' or /tv/ uses the term 'pleb'.
>>
>>324295537

Xcom certainly isnt because of the maddening RNG.

Civ 5 can scale from super casual to not casual, but even still, once you learn the ropes, ita not too hard because the AI isnt very good.

At least it isnt as bad as beyond earths AI though, that shit is just a sandbox even on the highest difficulty.
>>
An actual casual game is something like Flappy Bird or Temple Run

Putting Civ 5 or XCOM on the same level as those games is absurd, even if they are entry-level strategy games
>>
the newest xcom? yes, it is

Eh, it's not that bad. A challenge for sure but I don't see why you would need to be very determined. Assuming you have a working brain and stop to think for a min before rushing in.

Even as a simpler board game style version of the classic X-COM titles, NuCOM still requires some decent understanding of its mechanics to succeed at it on Classic/Impossible.

XCOM 2 is adding a lot of new features and improving on the formula of EU/EW.
>>
You have to join a Steam group to have an actual full-length multiplayer match of Civ 5
>>
>>324295537
No.

My metric is if my parents (in their mid 50s and fairly technophobic) could get into the game. Flap bird, Candy Crush, Dance Central, and Wii Sports are casual. A game as dense as Civ 5 and X-Com are not for them--sure, they are easier to handle than their forefathers or contemporaries but it is still leagues above the aforementioned games in complexity.

Casual has just become a random demerit /v/ likes to toss around at any game that is more stream-lined (read: less bullshit-y") than the handful of sacred cows on this site.

Yeah I'm sure casuals will have a fun time facing off against this gigantic faggot
>>
>>324297296
My metric is if a dudebro normie can enjoy the game without getting overwhelmed by difficulty and going back to Cowaduty.
>>
>>324297296
>>324297556
I would say that you're both correct. It's a spectrum, not a binary thing.

Of course, if you define it first, which both of you did, then you could make it binary. Assuming everyone agrees to the definition.
>>
>>324296182
A new one comes out like tomorrow
>>
>>324295537
Not as casual as Chess. You can learn the rules in an hour and an average game lasts about that long.
>>
>>324297546
>If it isnt my favorite City-State
>>
>>324296765
bomb diffuse thin man council mission first month almost requires a guaranteed reset. Game has a really weird difficulty curve. If you make it passed the first two months and have decently upgraded people, it gets a lot easier.
>>
For their genres, yes

But you'd be hard pressed to find actual casuals playing them
>>
>>324298490
If only opening up to women was as easy the opening moves of a game of chess.
>>
>Friends want to play CIV 5 multiplayer.
>They don't play on fastest speed.

The fuck, who wants to wait 30 turns for a soldier?
>>
They are both more casualised versions of their respective serieses, but they're definitely not casual. Casual games are pretty much defined by easy to pick up and low time commitment, and while the first is sort of true, the second definitely isn't.
>>
>>324296182
>the XCOMs genre is pretty much dead now so that doesn't matter.

Xcom 2 comes out in <3 weeks. "Dead Genre" he says.
>>
>>324298816
It is though, unless you're fat/ugly, in which case you're fucked.

>>
>>324295537
Depends on mods. I know that XCom with no mods and even on hardest tier isnt that hard as long as you use cover and play smart, but Long Dong is fucking retarded with how it actively wants you to lose. Don't know much about Civ though.
>>
>>324296017
>my gf tries to play Civ 1
>she settles a city and only keeps making Militia and (later) Phalanxes, until invaded by England and blown to pieces by Cannons and Musketmen
>>
>>324299404
Why would you make her play Civ 1 instead of Civ 5?
>>
>>324295537
Civ is a simplistic game but it's quite normal in in casual/esportfag scale

XCOM is absolute casual roll to win roll to die territory
>>
>>324299895
I guess playing on normal difficulty would give you that impression since it inflates your dice rolls so they succeed more often.
>>
>>324300117
>roll to win roll to die
>>
>>324299512
it was some years ago...
My best friend would also sometimes drop just by to play Civ, with considerably better results. He realy loved game but didn't have PC, only NES. We would watch some movies, drink beer/ homemande wine, and after I would go to sleep, he would keep playing untill 5AM or so. Eventually he got his own machine.
fun times.
>>
>>324295537

On a player aspect? No, a casual xbox dudebro wont stand 10+ hours games of civ, or handle XCOM risk management well and would quit.

However, in a "play stile" both games would be great casual games. Like, I would love to play civ in my Cellphone for 10 minutes on the bus /subway, and save (also, civ takes like 1 min for a full game AI make its move) even if the same game take a month.

But we are stuck with those pay not 2 Wait shitty games like clash of clans

>>324300178
So you're saying any game with any amount of RNG at all is casual such as Battletech?

That's pretty fucking stupid when most TBT games are reliant on it, otherwise it would literally be a case of whoever sees who first wins.
>>
>>324300117
I finished Ironman Classic.

The game is board game tier when it comes to mechanics.
The level of tactics used can be only summed up as "Schrodinger's plan" as if "We are both alive and dead at the same time depending if we hit or not".

>>

>>324300441

Battletech, the grand daddy of TBT games uses RNG, games are won and lost based on dice rolls. The key to any game with RNG is planning ahead and having redundancy plans in case any move fails. Preparation and prediction skills is how you win in these sorts of games.
>>
>>324300441
RNG is not bad/good.
It's a way to adding element of unreliability/unpredictability to game.
XCOM EU is fucked up in amount of importance it places on RNG.

The game is as brain draining as Puzzle Quest.

I disagree, it keeps the experience fresh every time and pretty much the only reason I have 400 hours in the game. I hate being able to meta game because I'm so prone to doing it.
>>
Yes, ESPECIALLY Xcom
>>
>>324301292
I also 400 hours in Puzzle Quest.
XCOM is not a bad game.
Just not as deeply tactical as fans try to make it look like.
I wan't more faithful original Xcom remake (with Silent Storm gunplay and Metal Gears level of TECHNOLOGY).

Those games are only more hardcore than Civ 5 because the tutorials are shit and you need to watch Youtube tutorials to have anything more than a vague understanding of how anything works.

It was on that day that I realised my autism lite can never compare to the real thing.
>>
>>324295642
I love watching xcom but I just hate playing the game myself. I'd really like if they made an xcom game centered more on base building and dispatching ships to destroy UFO's rather than controlling a small scale task force half of the time.

Also AoE 2 trumps tbs CIV 5
