I actually loathe the combat part of it, exploring, getting items and treasure in itself is so much more rewarding.

Necro is obviously the most fun (and best, besides maybe Conflux).

Other than that, Castle is a really bruiser town that can really smash enemy armies. Stronghold can rush behemoths and has a generally strong army all around IMO.

I've heard people say dungeon is really good too, but i've basically only really played Necro, Castle, Rampart, and Stronghold.

4 IMO has fundamentally broken mechanics that literally ruin the game.

For example, retaliations are concurrent. Meaning, the enemy retaliates as a full-strength unit before it loses units from your attack. Completely negates the attackers advantage and therefore the incentive to take the offensive, and therefore takes out a huge part of what made Heroes 3 combat interesting. If you have played any amount of heroes 3 you are already balking at how dumb of a change that is.

This is not the only example of major fuck-ups, but a shining example of how little thought or care went into it. The combat map is fucking weird, the units are ugly and don't fit with the towns, it's ugly.

4 is really fucked up, not worth playing at all.

I could never really get into III, even though I first played it when it came out. Playing through the campaign the maps felt too large, you ran around for 3 hours before you even met the computer.

if there's one problem with 3 it's that the campaigns are too strenuous, long, and unengaging for new players.

it's more fun to load up some random small scenarios and duke it out with the computer, or play hotseat with a friend.

Start with V, it has the typical strategy game campaign where you get one or two new units a map, early maps are fairly small and you get most of the important things spoonfed for you.
Once you know the basics you can try III. Stay away from 6 and 7, while they are newbie friendly they are also really shit.

I've been playing Heroes 3 since it came out and just now (literally these days) I'm playing the campaigns seriously.

And they're a shitload of fun once you know how to exploit the game, but yeah, pretty hardcore unless you do so.
