Smash 64 top 8 officially underway!
Stream @ showdownsmash
Smash 4 and Melee later tonight.
LET'S FUCKING DO THIS
>chat realizes every game will be on dreamland
Oh my fuck this is boring. 2 minutes before someone takes a stock, just jumping around doing absolutely fucking nothing. Defensive play at Dabuz levels. Why the fuck does people like 64?
>mfw you can literally see who is a shitter at games just by scanning the thread to see who's whining about Sm64sh neutral game
lel, welcome to how all other fighting games work, niggers. Footsies waiting for a hit confirm into your combos.
Enjoy being absolute plebs, you are the reason the FGC does not take Smashbabbys seriously.
It was intentional
64 FAGS ON SUICIDE WATCH
64 FAGS ON SUICIDE WATCH
64 FAGS ON SUICIDE WATCH
I actually agree. It's pretty campy but I I think it's the most interesting to watch.
The best kirby/ness main coming through.
>these fucking kindergarten edge-guards
Holy fuck even Smash 4 has more depth than this.
Other games don't do five life bars in one round.
Fuck I am laffin at you dumb ass children.
does anyone else lose all their hype when day 3 comes? For every tournament.
Day 2 is always the most exciting for me, watching people fight for a top 8 spot is super entertaining for me, but top 8 itself gets so fucking boring for some reason.
>Except all the top players who would rather go back to brawl
>they couldn't even dash dance?
Dancetrotting is a perfectly viable movement option
Mango Hbox, Westballz and M2king have all praised the game. The only notable players who have complained as far as I'm aware of are Hax and Leffen
Their are definitely characters that benefit from dreamland but it is neutral enough to not be overpowering for any one character. Dreamland in this game and melee are very different, this one is much smaller and doesn't have the insane ceiling of melee.
>8 minutes matches where the players are pretty much only feeling each other out
I'd rather watch Rosalina dittos in Tr4sh than this. I'm glad 64 is not on the main stage in most tournaments.
>don't bother posting
Not him but fuck that's a desperate and transparent betrayal of your autistic need to get the last word lol.
I bet you'd keep replying to him all fucking day just to try to get it.
You'll probably even reply to me because your autism will demand it kek
It's in 64 but it's not playable. They're using a modded version of 64 called 19XX that adds a timer and FD and probably some other stuff.
They won't play on it though because they don't want to make it obvious that they're using a modded version of the game even though I'm 100% sure Nintendo won't give a fuck about them using a version of 64 that just adds a timer and the use of FD.
They don't even play 64. It gets praised by meleefags purely because its not brawl or s4. They'll post an isai combo vid to prove how hype it is even though that's likely the only footage of comp 64 that they've ever seen.
Turns out having zero defensive options makes the game really defensive.
That may be one reason why they're not playing on it, but they're mainly not playing on it because not everyone in the SSB64 community has easy access to FD for practice, so it's not tournament legal/standard yet.
thats how 64 is played, hitstun is too high to commit to unsafe options
its basically footsies: the game but stages are too big to force active confrontation and projectiles are mostly shitty
>mfw the babbys who don't know about competitive 64 shut the fuck up now after getting btfo on not knowing 64 match ups
I don't understand how you go from the 64 hitstun, shield stun, and recoveries to the shitfest brawl and sm4sh are. It's like they did a complete 180 on the series
I don't know if you consider this good or not cause all three of those things are terribly strong in 64. Seriously DK's recovery is just depressing. Melee had probably the best balance of those three mechanics.
>missing shield break punish
>after taunting that much
>the city of tacos
This. HAL is secretly one of the greatest developers in the industry. Anyone who plays Kirby games will tell you they're consistently fun as shit, and any other spinoff HAL makes is great too.
I guarantee you as soon as Sakurai left HAL he went from 'A part of a puzzle' to 'Everything goes through this man'.
>20XX and PM b&
I doubt Nintendo even remembers the 64 existed, but damn.
People thought after evo 2013 things would be smoother sailing with big N nut the truth is they couldn't control us from the outside so now they'll do it from the inside. And the smash community is so used to abuse that even the slightest corporate acknowledgement us unequivocally taken as a positive development if not outright compulsory.
The only reason PM is dead is because /v/ made it into a meme to hate on PM during Smash 4's development, and unfortunately it stuck making PM into "ProjectMeme" and "Project Autism".
It's actually fucking disgusting. If it wasn't for some vocal minority of Smash 4 faggots brainwashing the hivemind with their shitposting, PM would still be alive and well.
I wouldn't go this far, but as someone who doesn't even play PM, the hate was definitely unwarranted. As far as I could tell though, it's exclusive to /v/ like a lot of other shit flinging.
Because they don't want to split up the competitive community. If people do regular mods that's fine but the problem was there were some people that wanted to try to become the second PMDT or fix up what was in the leaked builds.
20XXTE is banned due to bugs as of rn not because of Nintendo.
Sad PM isnt there, my friends like it sonce they dont play melee as often and it would be cool to see it not die.
Project M wasnt even good at the end of its life. Lets just be real here, 3.6 was trash.
The community is also major ass cancer, when the game wasnt b& there was nothing but whining about nerfs and buffs.
Sakurai is like the nicest dude ever. Smash manchildren just have victim complexes. Sakurai has nothing against the competitive scene if you bother to read any of his interviews.
Because then there'd be regions or individuals that would use certain builds. It's better for the comp community if everybody's on the same page. It'd be weird if you lived in a place that used 3.6 vanilla and then went to another where they have Lin & knuckles plus balance changes.
You're right. I shouldn't be harsh on him because he's clearly legitimately bipolar. The interviews make it clear.
>First says he hates the competitive scene
>Then he doesn't mind
>Says all Smash games should feel and play differently
>Smash 4 is basically a modified Brawl that probably has a lot of the Brawl code in it
>"My guys said that Samus was the strongest character in this build"
>Allows her to be near useless
>Used to balance the games himself, now hands the balance off to literal whos which is why Brawl was fucking awful
>Kept adding more FE characters despite saying he wanted unique characters
I can go on. I know you're baiting, but people need to actually know how fucking weird he is and how he goes against his own word all the time.
PM community was a majority of Brawl and Melee players. Brawl players of course were going to continue to Smash 4. Melee players just thought the mod was jank as fuck and stuck with Melee. Everyone moved on and seeing that there isn't any benefits of playing PM it is very easy to drop. Also
3.2 da best.
>>"My guys said that Samus was the strongest character in this build"
>>Allows her to be near useless
Because they don't know how to balance properly. They tried to fix Kirby after 64 by making him the worst character in the game.
Puff is just a fundamentally boring as fuck character in 90% of instances. Not even muh zoning cuz every other character can do that to varying degrees and less degenerate than bair spamming
Nope. It was in 2014 but not last year. It sucks because I'm pretty sure jebaily likes PM. He didn't want to brink attention to it Since sm4sh was in the spotlight and didn't want to risk getting Nintendo buttmad.
>Isai is rusty
>Isai only does his best on Hyrule
>tacos is on point today
>tfw puff is tedious to watch even in 64
I love her but it's difficult to sometimes.
Most likely they're just balancing around free-for-all and assuming that shit like Sheik and Rosalina are balanced, while Samus is as well because LOL CHARGE SHOT WILL HIT ANY OF THE OTHER PLAYERS SO RANDOM
I'm pretty sure everybody would love to used the PM bugfix build but since some of the PMDT had to be fags some TOs are really adamant about using the official release only. For convenience sake the rest of the community did the same. It sucks but it's not that big a deal and is more convenient.
>24 minute sets.
Holy shit I hate Jiggs.
>there's not a single Smash game where Jigglypuff isn't cancer and/or shit
What other moves feel as good to land as Rest, from any Smash game?
Given it's abrupt introduction into a series that was progressively gaining more competitive-based tech (see: Melee's sidestep dodges and charged smashes) and the fact that Sakurai openly stated that he wanted Smash to be fun instead of competitive (during Brawl's development of course), it's pretty clear what tripping was meant to be.
hello reddit!!!!!!!!!!! :D
My locals have been getting more popular. The community is still passionate but the fact of the matter is that being barred from nationals really hurts the game's exposure and thus the game doesn't get to grow as much as the Melee or sm4sh.
>tfw scrubs whining about my controller-smack skills even though its a legitimate strategy
Lot's of things come close but nothing is better than getting a rest off a hard read.
>(see: Melee's sidestep dodges and charged smashes)
subtle, I like it
>Here's how one guy, who wrote in to Brawl producer Masahiro Sakurai, put it: "The other day, I had my first run at Smash Bros. Brawl online play. What I found was that nobody ever went on the attack; it was like everyone was taking the approach of waiting for the other guy to take the offensive. There were no items, either. I wanted to shout at them 'This isn't how you do Smash Bros.'! As the producer, what do you think of fights like this?"
>Sakurai — who's still recovering from a repetitive-strain injury to his arm that's keeping him from playing video games for the time being — took time out in his Famitsu column this week to respond. "The idea of Brawl's 'carefree brawling' motto was to get rid of as many restraints as possible and allow people to choose whatever play approach they liked," he wrote. "I'd like people to take some freer approaches with their gameplay, but the sort of battle style you describe in your letter is not interesting or fun. That's why I'll probably be thinking of a way to deal with that in the next game. We've learned a lot about net play since Brawl was released, after all, so a lot more is possible."
God-Sakurai learned from his mistake.
Apex, both Paragons, Smashcon, and Eclipse, not to mention a ton of smaller hype tournaments throughout the year.
Evo was no better or worse than the year before I think. Big House and Dreamhack Winter were shit, I'll give you that.
Hbox armada grand finals
Apex, Ceo and WTFox were the only enjoyable big tournaments for me.
Its not even that im a huge Hbox hater, its just that im bored of seeing the same grand finals every tournament.
Historically Melee tournaments have had entertaining top 32/64's, and shit grand finals. That's what I've accepted anyway. Exceptions of course being M2k dominating Leffen or Apex 2015.
Inclined to say it was pretty boring besides leffen's dominance pre-evo. Apex was good but PP went MIA after. Hungrybox also makes top 8's an absolute chore and with his recent consistency we get him in everything up to GF. (hint: the reason bh4 was so good was there was no hbox in top 8; now just try comparing that tourney to bh5)
>thinking they give a fuck when 32% of the top 100 use Fox.
>m2k does it
>suddenly m2k represents the whole community
3.6 is the best version, atleast the way I see it
i love 3.02 as much as the next guy, and i feel lucas and mewtwo didnt deserve such a large buff, but its kinda silly when people say 3.5 and 3.6 suck. the lower tiers were buffed, bugs were fixed, characters got new completely original
funtechniques. i cant wait to see how the meta develops over time
>3.6 is the best version, atleast the way I see it

As much a corpse develops in a coffin.
Literally every Smash Bros game at every level is defensive. Melee Fox has some of the best defensive tools of all time. Its always smarter to react to your opponent. Always. People have to get over this stigma.
It's like pottery.
>armada has never camped
Don't get me wrong, tripping was an awful idea.
I'm saying its more likely it existed because sakurai just thought it'd be wacky fun randomness (he was wrong), not because he was being spiteful.
>Sitting right outside the window so I get a nice view over this years winter. Plenty of snow
>No drink now, maybe tea or Masala chai later.
>Fire Emblem 7 on GBA emulator, but now what I would call comfy
>Waiting for Genshiken 1 and 2 to download.
All an all pretty good
Well inherently so in that even scrubs will try to avoid getting hit, but at any developed understanding of smash a reactive playstyle is very strong, moreso the higher up you go in skill tiers.
Oh god, there were people actually defending the retarded choice of getting rid of L-canceling.
I fucking beg you retards to play Rivals of Aether for two weeks and tell me that's still a good idea.
I fucking beg you.
You know what Ganondorf has to do to get 34% in one hit in melee? Land a warlock punch, so I want to know how the hell Peach can have it so easy to get 34% in one move but Ganondrof does not.
>pick hard counter against ICs
>try to time out ICs with PEACH while being TWO STOCKS AHEAD
>complain on twitter after losing
>twitch chat salt explosion
Mango vs Nintendude tonight in top 8. The aftermath will be delicious.
Exactly. Because it's fucking broken because all but one character can spam FAIR due to approaches being free as fuck.
Rivals is really fun, but it desperately needs grabs. Having safe approaches being free is retarded, and the whiff punish update barely did anything.
I'M SAYING IT'S BAD YOU BUTT MUNCH.
Ice was holding down to waveshine so he got hit with an extra hit of DSmash, if you CC the entire time or get caught dropping through a platform you can take up to 84% from a single Peach DSmash
Scrubs don't understand the value of the offense-defense interactions it opens up and only see MUH POINTLESS EXECUTION
Notice their lack of being able to articulate a point in terms of gameplay that would argue its iustification or lack thereof as a design choice
I never realized how defensive is 64.
Jesus, this is so boring. I know the hitstun is huge or big, but still.
Atleast, that Fox vs Pikachu looks interesting. Didn't make it, but nice comeback, Pikachu.
