What's a good 1st game for this series?

I imported Trails of Cold Steel, never having played Trails in the Sky due to price and priorities.

Cold Steel is great though, put 60 hours into it in the past week and have several chapters to the game left. Shits just getting better too. No previous game knowledge needed, infact it can spoil some characters for new players.

I guess you start with Cold Steel, although you'd find it hard to play FC/SC afterwards, as Cold Steel improved the gameplay dramatically.

Fantastic games that are incredibly slow. Great if you care about NPCs feeling like actual people. The emphasis on having NPC's have their own lives and stories independent of you reminded me of Gothic of all things.

This game was a strange experience for me because I wasn't particularly fond of most of the male characters, but there were a plethora of interesting female characters that I really liked. One of the few times when I wanted to go the harem route.

With that said, I kept Elliot around when I could because resounding beat is awesome.

All trails are related and mover forward in timeline so they will have plenty of references and recurring characters besides that returning villain will make their appareance once again. You can play it and finish it understanding most of the things around these new heroes but I suggest to finish FC/SC before starting Cold Steel II when localized only for better enjoyment of the overall context of the world and narrative.

I played through Trails in the Sky FC and am about 1/4th of the way through SC. I played FC for 50 hours- and that was completing every sidequest I could, and talking to as many NPCs as possible multiple times.

It reminded me a lot of Lunar, how when something happened, the lines of every NPC in the entire city changed. In the last city of FC, every NPC has probably around 10 sets of lines. So every time a major event happened during the last city, I would go around to every single NPC in the city and talk to them again and all their lines changed. If you liked Lunar 1 and 2, then you'll like Trails.

Minor spoiler about my favorite NPC in FC and SC.
Phelio and Lakeisha, Phelio is a constant slacker who can't get a job and Lakeisha is the wife who always complains about it. Phelio finally gets a job at the end of FC, and then goes on a gambling trip with Lakeisha, where Lakeisha hires the bracers to beat him at gambling.

Playing those first gives you greater CONTEXT for whats going on during Sen but it isn't required to understand whats going on during Sen.

playing them out of order just means you figure out the same things in different order, you still figure out the same things.

Now playing those first DOES help with understanding things like Sara's backstory a bit more, who a lot of cameo characters Like Blueblanc are, and How significant Olviert is, but it isn't going to ruin the game if you dont know those things going in immediately. It's like people ignore Sen's plot is following Kids largely unaware of the world issues going on and their field studies entirely exist to show them these issues happening in front of them.

A player who comes into Sen first just comes in with similar ignorance as the kids and thus learns about the greater issues alongside them, an older player just knows these things going in ahead of time and is watching the kids react to them.

Just started this. I like it so far(only at the mine), but world seems a bit too static and lifeless imo. Not a big criticism I know, but it certainly could've done with a bit of leaves falling off trees, or the doves in the city actually making noises when they fly off. And some light shafts maybe. Stuff like this.

The most alive feeling I got from the world, was when I visited the outpost for the training side quest. At least the river was flowing.

but see here's the thing. it's not like you can't go back to the previous books and read them in proper order later. Sen follows new characters in a new area with most of it's story occurring at the same time as the Crossbell stuff.


Here's the reality, America missed the boat with this stuff thus we only have 2 actual options for getting these games in English officially going forward.

A: we jump ahead to Sen skipping 3rd chapter, and Crossbell stuff to build the brand, and ideally bring those over later, or reluctantly skip them in order to get America close enough to japan that we can start getting the games closer to the same time as them.

B: we sit in a hole and scream and rage about only getting them in exact order or fuck it, the series never sells enough because it dead ends on the PC in terms of ports XSEED can get access to, and we get zero official english versions ever, leaving the series only for japan, people who read moon, and the pipe dream fan groups will forever translate it.

The ideal is not going to happen, we're too behind as is. Option A at least allows us to catch up.

In either case stop acting like it ruins everything forever you don't know 100% of lloyd's deal because you started with sen. if a player went in with Sen, and now likes the games, he's likely to want to play Ao anyway, but sitting there screamign 'no fuck you play these games in this exact same order and only this order even thoguh 3 games in this order don't actually exist in official english.

they are all good games that should be played, if some people had to start with the fifth book to find motivation to read the first thats not world shattering.

The remakes of the games up until Cold Steel are under the "Evolution" titles, but they're not in English. They have voice acting added as well as new CGs for scenes, new character art, and redone soundtracks.

I find the easiest way to tell now is if the project is dubebd by either extremly cheap (ATLUS) or extremely broke (XSEED) companies, it's never Troy no matter how much it sounds like him.

There is actually a plot related reason that explain why she is so strong even without Patter Matter but she is basically Loewe level in term of skills, she only lack an adult body to actually use these skills at their full potential
