That's one of the things FE14 did okay.

While he overall plot is ass, the individual characters are overall better.
The multiple route system means an ally on one route might be a recurring boss on the other. It makes for some neat shit.

One of my issues with awakening is that only a few people got any screentime and all of them were boring as fuck and the villains were shit. Takumi isn't a traditional villain but I want to murder him. He's memorable in that way.

IntSys was the motivation for them to make this game in the first place, because their initial concept of just mashing both IPs together and making an FE game with SMT dudes was something the director thought IntSys could make on their own. The dudes at Atlus wanted to make an Atlus spin on FE instead of "FE with SMT dudes"

unfortunately that would have been better and sold better but you can't say they didn't get creative with the concept regardless.
