DT and PJ beat out SSS in terms of art style and sprites. PiT and BiS sucked in this department (way too clean and "smooth", if it makes sense) but the 3DS games are gorgeous and amazingly animated. The underwater area can be a bit annoying due to reduced speed I guess.

The beach area in general was absolutely garbage, is the dictionary definition of filler, especially the underwater segments, it's only redeeming factor is the music, and Dream Team's beach music is a remix that beats it anyway

The entire point of the games is team up attacks, when you strip Mario and Luigi away, you can make good puzzles, but in no fucking way do you force battles, fucking No, and yet you have the battle with Piranha bean, only 1 bro, against annoying attacks that take fucking forever, and he doesn't even get a boss music

When the game's good it's pretty good - it definitely feels faster and smoother to play than the DS games. But there are parts where I really want to take a long long break and just stop playing. Something about cycling through the different powers using the shoulder buttons feels clunky, though that's on the restriction of the GBA. Maybe they should have a touch-screen inventory of moves, like in Link Between Worlds? Be able to warp to different towns? A game with the UI and dungeons of LBW with the combat and fast flow of SSS would be absolutely amazing.

In a game like M&L, the enemies would need different attack patterns in order to trip things up. Taking double damage would also be a means of making the game more difficult; there was already a badge that doubled damage taken and dealt.

Disabling Bro Moves takes away a feature of the game for the sake of padding out boss fights longer. I don't know how feasible sped up animations would be, given how some of them are limited by your reaction time.

I played the United "Double the HP" States version and had on my first playthrough (I think a year after it released) and on my second ( a few months ago) I had reached to the final boss with all of my characters as level 17. I passed princess shroob easily with infinite copy flowers + mix flowers but got destroyed by the second form of the elder sister due to a lack of 1up shrooms

Reposting the Paper Jam rundown

Here's a non-bias list for those unsure

+/- mixed

+Tutorials are all optional, your only required to listen to the battle cards one

+Gameplay is the best it's ever been, the attack animations of the newer moves are a lot more brutal

+Bosses are a lot more intense and easily the best gameplay wise, mainly because they have to be balanced to the fact that you have 3 people

+The writing is amazing, especially to the Mario universe characters and the interactions are fucking great.

+/- Toad Missions are essentially the second half of the game, every area has one, the minigames themselves range from fun to annoying, it's not bad as your bound to have Atleast 1 favorite

+/- Papercraft Mario is interesting and appreciative but it falls flat on some areas like trying to turn being the equivalent of parallel parking a truck in a one way. It's fun but its own unique way.

- Setting areas are generic, but luckily the writing and Yoko's god tier music makes it bearable

-Story is extremely simple

It's world in general is just a hub with portals, no exploration at all

and the fact that the Bros moves were transformed into item management

I played Paper Jam already, if it needs a spot, it should be over PiT and DT

Everything about it is fucking excellent save for the overworld being generic and the story being simple (However the context demands a simple plot because of the situation)

Other than that, its gameplay is by far the best in the series, being able to run in the overworld is great, and the character interactions and writing are fucking great

The problem with Sticker Star is that they still used the most generic mario enemies for it's enemy list and reskins of said enemies

Paper Jam still stays with the Mario universe, but you have a fuck ton of different enemies ranging from Chargin Chucks, to Bully's to 3D Worlds Ant Troopers and 3D land's sandmargh's, it's a lot more variety

and the best part is that enemies that appear in normal form and Paper form attack entirely different

I want to add that characters with important roles are pretty much all at their best in this game due to writing and imagination in their attack patterns in the case of enemies. Just to mention a few, Nabbit is much cooler than you'd expect, Toadette is energetic and funny and you see a mechanic/inventor side of her never shown before, the Koopalings finally speak and interact with each other and Bowser Jr was turned into one of the best-written main Mario characters.

I remember making a post once about how the color scheme was also a big issue, among others. The game uses a lot of brown and purple tones, so it feels darker and more depressing than the other games. Even something as minor as the textboxes having a slightly brown hue affects it. The only area I can recall being bright and colorful was the volcano with all the yoshis.

It's a culmination of the last two games with the giant character you used in BIS turned against you and you having to face him with your current giant character. I found Undertale battles to be equally, if not more engaging. Because of the bullet hell elements constantly keeping you on your toes. Whereas with SS, enemy actions are more simple, tend to be singular strikes, or easy to read consecutive strikes. But ultimately, just... very easy.
SS's battles are interesting on a novel level. Seeing the animations and experiencing the timing for the first time is a nice little fun thing to see. But not enough to really create a decent challenge. The game gets repetitive quickly. Which is why they immediately have to move on to the next bit of dialog to keep the player interested.

I don't see how you can call SSS repetitive and not Undertale. Like, compare Woohoo Hooniversity (a medium-sized dungeon) to Waterfall (pretty much 1/4th of the game). In Woohoo you got your Laser Snifits, your Viruses, Yo Bros, Eekers, Mecha Chomps... each with their own battle tactics and methods of defeat. And some of the enemies even mix it up (e.g. Mecha Chomp malfunctioning and attacking the opposite bro.) Meanwhile, in Waterfall you just fight the same two enemies who have the same two attacks over and over (Woshua/Aaron), and the encounter rate is ridiculously high.

It's really alot of fun. Each takes a button and a bro, with whoever is in front controlling the field movement.

Best thing is since all the puzzles and mini games require both buttons, some of theme become much harder working together.

The comparison is a little more broad than pointing to any one specific aspect. The only things that are similar are:

1. Both games have a fairly low difficulty. While the battle systems both have their own individual unique approaches to turn based fighting. Neither of them really live up to the potential their respective battle systems held. The timed attacks and the bro attacks never reach the level of complexity that would offer a high challenge in SSS. And the bullet hell patterns, and the the passive actions never reach the level of complexity that would offer a high challenge in Undertale.(save for 2 hardmode bosses)

Both battle systems are highly reliant on the novel features.

2. Both of the games implement a lot of dialog throughout almost every thing you're tasked with. There is barely any freedom to do what you want. You make the slightest amount of process, and there's a new context sensitive bit of dialog to stall you before you can do the next task, and be greeted by the next context sensitive dialog. It can be pretty annoying, especially when a lot of it is handholdy tutorial stuff, disguised as humor, but you're not amused.

3.And without the constant dialogue, the task you're performing, really isn't all that fun. It's just that basic busy work games give you when they don't know what else to do.

Ultimately, both games feel more like a tour through an RPG, rather than a genuine platform for exploration and discovery.

The game had a pretty sharp quality dip after Woohoo University. The ocean sections, escort mission, beanstar fetch quest and jokes end were all really tedious compared to the earlier dungeons and make the game frustrating to replay.

While Bros. Attacks were cool and flashy there was no real variety to them and they were really easy to execute. You could beat practically every boss battle in the game within two or three turns by putting damage boosting equipment on Mario and spamming level 3 chopper bros, and there's no incentive not to since there's no additional party members or customizable abilities to mix up the battle mechanics. You're playing with the same moveset for most of the game.

Some of the required minigames aren't that fun, though its definitely the best in the series when it comes to this since the later games go overboard.


It's a good series but I've never really gotten the praise for it compared to the earlier Paper Mario's and Seven Stars. The only thing it does differently that I really like is the real time dodging system.

My main problem with Dream Team was that the pacing felt awful to me. For example, when you first get to the ruins to find the Dream Stone, you realize that Bowser and Antasma already stole it. Your main objective is to find them and stop them from using it. To actually get to that point you...

When will people stop pretending Mario and RPGs get along? They're bad and just because it has Mario it doesn't make them any better. Paper Mario is a bit better but still a mediocre game for children.

SMRPG is a whole different story, as Squaresoft did amazing RPGs back then.

The gate only lets being who are pure of heart through and says Luigi isn't allowed to go through because he has a dark secret he can tell nobody about. The gate then says it was just messing with him and lets him through, but Luigi's reaction makes it clear he really has a dark secret.

Some fanwanked it to it referring to the darkness in his heart that led to his corruption in PiT, but in my opinion it was just something silly as him being gay for Prince Peasly in SS.

He's really a lonely kid who's not nearly into villainy as much as his father is and only wants to have fun and have his attention and friends. However, Bowser doesn't really listen to him and dismisses his ideas and opinions as silly child's nonsense, with the tragic part being that he doesn't even do it on purpose because he's otherwise shown to be caring and protective of his son (both Bowsers are in fact). The same applies to the relationship between Junior and the Koopalings, he speaks excitedly to Morton at one point but the latter just seems to think of him as a spoiled brat and is indulgent with him strictly because he's his boss' son. Junior and Paper Junior bond over their identical situation and finally find a friend in each other and are always shown to have fun together even when they're on boring duty like guarding the princesses. I won't go into detail, but it ends rather tragically for them and it seems unlikely that each one's situation will truly improve.

Yoshi-neon egg part was quite literally just padding. It had a few good bits in that, but it was just going around the small world and finding the neon-eggs for some fag who refused to give a star piece to you. It was just padding in a previously perfectly paced game.

10/10 apart from that though, and as others have said, no free-roam at the end of the game. Great music, sprites, gameplay, and story.

I never saw a scene where Bowser Junior was getting put down by the koopalings. I saw Bowser ignoring him when he tried to show him the book, and one where he gets the book from Roy, but that's it. If I'm wrong, someone's gonna need to provide proof.
