Their combo stunlocks you on 1 hit and a full combo kills you regardless of your hp (hits for over a 1000 hp, you dont have that much hp until you're like level 25)

Your hits inflict 1-5 damage.
If they fall off the cliff, the fight resets.
they constantly kill your pawns and you have to waste time reviving them so that they're not forfeit.

I've played this game on the PS3 dozens of times, restarting my character no less. And the bandits in this game are NOT higher then lvl 15 at most. You are just dumbass that doesn't know how to dodge or block and when to attack. The difference is that the Skeletons existed specifically to indicate "Don't got this way" so that you instead went toward the Undead Burg.

In this case, there is a quest past those bandits that, if not done early, can't be done that playthrough. I dunno if it's intended to be done by players on NG+ but as it is, it looks like shoddy game design.

You're exaggerating on both counts. I was a sorc, and while they certainly destroyed me, the rest of my group didn't die half as easily as you imply. My damage against them wasn't that terrible either. Miasma for aoe, and ingle for knockback served me well though. I'm not bragging about anything, I just didn't have the issues you seem to be having.

Not OP but dodgng their attacks isn't the issue. I killed all the bandits except the sword and board guy ez. Sword&board though, doesn't take any damage. He's easy to dodge but he just won't die. Shit man, what level are you? I just did it at level 15 (I did pretty much every other sidequest and board quest up to that point) as a rank 2 Strider with only Biting Wind (though I had the ring equipped that upgrades it).

I also only had my main pawn with me who's a Challenger/Acquiring Mage. Boon spells help out a ton early game. Just keep mashing Help until they give you one then Biting Wind the shit out of the enemies.

He's talking about a design choice, not a technical issue. Theres a group of bandits in a starting area which are very easy, but amongts them they have 3 bandits who are visually no different from the others who are several levels higher and who can kill you almost instantly.

As for the port, its bretty good m8. Greatly optimized and keyboard icons (no xbox icons bullshit).

But I did noticed 2 issues:

Sound is too low even at max.
And when a monster grabs you and you're prompted to press A and D repeteadly to escape their grip, the bar fills very very slowly even if you press the buttons like a maniac, so its basically impossible to free yourself when that prompt appears (and this can mean instant death with some monsters)

Turning on volume normalization in windows seems to work. Sound options in the control panel, go to the sound device with the green checkmark, hit properties, enhancements, check loudness equalization.

This probably isn't the best choice if you're an audiophile, but it works great for general use. They should eventually patch the game's volume though.

Here's my shorthand impressions:

Very neat open world with lackluster weather system.

Some good TECHNOLOGY moments like your physical build influencing combat, using destructibles, damage points on monsters etc.

Very good class variety.

Very obtuse and unnecessary stat system, item overload, endless cascade of menus you have to fiddle with every step of the way, detracting from the experience.

Cities are well designed scale wise but their layouts are far from impressive and points of interest seem too conveniently placed, they quickly become just hubs you run in and out of.

I view pawn party system as completely lackluster addition to gameplay and don't care about simplistic AI tagging along and helping with battles. I'd rather it was pure single player experience than this. And I know you can play it like it's a SP game etc.

While movesets are varied, playing with warrior gets you caught up in spamming two different moves over and over again, even playing with Zweihander in DS offers more variety.

Love the archery.

The game on the whole feels like a definition of "unpolished gem" or whatever. Will play it more to see bigger creatures but I mostly enjoy it for sprawling fields. Night time is underwhelming.

As far as I know, the game wont let you combine items blindly, you NEED to have both items on your inventory to be able to combine them, its not about discovering combinations, the game will spell them for you, but you need the materials.

Also you can just hoard all the shit you want and save it on your item storage, its global, and when you're upgrading gear, it automatically access to the storage so taht you dont have to move mats around.

Fighter/warrior can get kind of boring. If you want maximum options, start as fighter, then switch to assassin as soon as you get to Gran Soren, if you want the greatest variety of non magic offense. Plus if you don't plan to ever use magic, assassin will give you the best stat growth. Not that anon but dagger classes have always been my favorite archetype. No matter the game or combat system. Rogues often get the shaft compared to fighter/mage types in fantasy settings. It makes every stab through a mage's robe or piercing a fighter's armor feel pretty satisfying when daggers are typically forgotten. Plus the thought of the epic hero being some creepy sneak thief is entertaining to me.

DD doesn't really seem to care about your class as far as story goes but where many games make daggers just plain weak outside of burst damage so far I don't feel too gimped playing a melee strider.

Pretty much, if you want to be in the thick of it, and be a whirlwind of death, but also be able to snipe fools with a bow, then assassin is the class for you. If you decide you want to dabble in magic, then switch to sorceror from level 101 to 200 for the best magic growth. That build will leave you with a jack of all trades that can do any class decently once you factor in the stat boosts from equipment and the appropriate augments(I can not overstate just how useful the right augments are). Oh, and try not to spend any of your discipline points before you get to Gran Soren, to ensure you have the required 1,000 to unlock the assassin vocation.

I have a 970 and I drop to sub 30 in the fields around Gran Soren but I run it well above 60 maxed everywhere else.

Looking on the steam forums this seems to be a pretty common issue for 970s.

That part is designed to teach you how to run away. Not everything will go your way, and sometimes you learn the hard way you can't beat the opponent easily. You CAN do the fight though if you want... I don't recall my fighter being one shot either. I was in a battle against them and the wolves, survived by isolating enemies and having my pawns stick close. 2 striders, rook and a fighter. Yeah I had to get them up a few times but it's doable.

No it isn't, you're not expected to kill chimera/armoured cyclopes at level 10, which roam that area, the expected level progression is a straight line to gran soren, very comparable to dark souls way to the belfry gargoyles, those bandits are the skeletons of this game. Also comparable to running a straight line to new vegas and getting your ass torn apart by cazadors and death claws. although the boss isn't pathetic like pinwheel

Is this game pretty short? Apparently the main quest is split into 7 "parts" and I'm on the 6th at only about 16 hours and barely any of the map uncovered. Deny Salvation and The Final Battle are apparently the next quests for me

Whats that message about "keeping darkness at bay" when it gets dark?

I know it tells me to light the lantern, but I do notice that the screen gets progressively darker if I dont have the lantern lit.

will anything actually happen to me if I dont light the lantern?

Is there a way to turn off that shit where in the middle of battle time slows down and camera shifts to my pawn yelling something like "Fire is effective!" or grabs a guy and says "Now is the time to strike!"

Its really, really annoying.
