Start with Shadow of Chernobyl and get ZRP and Shaders Max. That's it.
ZRP comes with a easy to use modyfier program that allows you to tweak some small things. It can also change the ballistics if you can't stand the vanilla ones.

People get pissed about Complete 2009 because it's dishonestly advertised as consisting of nothing but graphical improvements and bug fixes, when in reality it alters gameplay a very significant amount from the vanilla game.
I mean, yeah, it's not that big of deal, just don't fucking play it. But it's the dishonesty of the modders and the subsequent parroting of the thing as the "essential beginner mod" that irks STALKER 'purists.'

GSC had progression down, but ultimately dropped it in CoP. I've never seen another game that does item, level, and difficulty progression as well as Stalker.
It really is the biggest issue in The Witcher series for me, plus the awful combat.

CoP is the most polished gameplay wise but the most boring story wise. Half of the game is just loot runs after blowouts to sell to beard.
Contrary to popular belief, AKs are not elder gods that never jam. They're as reliable as the average modern AR platform when under stress like being dropped into mud and sand.
They were just more average than early AR models back in the 50's~60's, and were since then surpassed. That's literally it.

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.
Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area is quite boring.

Also, there's definately going to be a STALKER 2 now that GSC Game World is back in business. It was their most popular franchise by far, was it not? Cossacks was big too and I think it was their first game, which is why they're currently making a new one.

I remember halfway through the beta; it was right around the time they introduced melee weapons that the game had completely been flooded with assholes and the mechanics were so easy to abuse that the only real threat was getting shot to death by 12 year olds who want your baked beans.

So it's been quite a while since I played the Stalker games. I played SoC vanilla and with some mod that adds all kinds of shit to it. I played CoP vanilla and one of the very first Misery versions. It wasn't even called Misery then. Can't remember. Anyway I waited for Misery and then everyone said it turned out to be shit. Then I waited for Gunslinger and then that never came.
So what should I play?!

What I Played: Misery 2.0
What I Expected: Base game + more weapons + difficulty boost to spice up the otherwise easy and predictable game

What I Got: Brutal 10-inch sandpaper rape with no lube and they don't call the next morning. And I haven't even made it past the first fucking DAY. Heed the warnings, they are not fucking bluffing when they call this mod "Misery".
Grigorovich ran the company and dev team right into the ground due to obsessing over making STALKER a mainstream franchise/IP while greedily chasing the dollar. Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat were pushed out too quickly, the team not given time to breath after the lengthy development nightmare Shadow of Chernobyl was, while he wanked off books, tshirts, TV series deal, comics, and other junk that he figured would make him a fortune. When the time came for STALKER 2 Grigorovichwas fixated on making it a big console game alongside PC, and production and dev team crumbled under the financing and development pressure.
I don't doubt a modern STALKER with expected modern production values (let's be real, /v/ has a tendency to shit on "ugly" games just as much as normies, even if many don't like to admit it) would cost a small fortune compared to the original, which would probably require a console port. But even so, the handling of this IP and the dev team is one of the biggest fuck-ups in the industry. STALKER was a miracle that almost didn't happen several times over the multi-years it took to churn through development and design problems. It didn't even match the original promise, was buggy and janky as fuck, but still a gem of a game and unlike anything out there. The fact it finally got made, and was good, is amazing. And at the very least was a great starting point to build the series. Say what you will about CDPR, they at least had the smarts to take their team with each of the three Witcher games. They let each one cook and never rushed into thinks (port/remake of the original for consoles aside). Grigorovich on the other hand ran the entire fucking franchise into the ground, effectively ruining its future forever.
Actually that was really impressive, it fires manually even after the entire chamber has been compromised. I mean you watch the AR15 one and he's right, it's designed to not allow itself to be compromised, but that doesn't really answer the question "will it fire when compromised?" which is the point.
Even in the first Misery, I spent a couple of weeks (in-game time) barely making enough money to eat and heal myself day-to-day. As a sniper, I had to choose between buying ammo or buying tuna cans many times. Once you get your bearings, though, the game gets real good.
Misery 2, though, fuck that piece of shit. They added so much unnecessary complexity to it, fucked the economy, and gave the enemies godly aim, that it went from being "enjoyably painful in a masochistic way" to "STOP I FORGOT THE SAFE WORD I FORGOT THE SAFE WORD STOP PLEASE".
So I'm downloading CoP to play with the Call of Chernobyl mod, and I was wondering if it changes balance at all? Are there mods I can get on top of this one to make it more immersive? Misery is shit now so I don't wanna settle for that
