Ada's campaign was originally just 1-player but people complained (rightfully) so they patched in a second character who is basically there to be an extra gun + a liability during QTEs

he has no animations or dialogue, so for all intents and purposes he may as well be imaginary.

he also has no grapple so he just teleports to Ada when she uses it

I disagree. 5 was a really fun romp in co-op and had a really entertaining plot and characters, not to mention the aesthetics of the environment are quite unique. 6 was very interesting as well, it was the most over the top shit and like 5 had fun co-op.

I think the reason people don't like those games is because they are comparing them to previous RE games, which were absolute masterpieces. Of course they would look bad compared to that, but if you compare RE 5/6/Revelations to the the standard of most other games these days, they are clearly above average.

RE1 Dualshock: belive it or not, the soundtrack, the monsters, the gore and the mansion is more spooky for me, maybe because i was a kid when i played it.
RE2: great weapons and enviroments, Birkins's transformations and the relationship between Claire and Sherry, still not as spooky as RE1 Deaf Sundtrack.
RE0: love the partner system, the not safebox system could have done better, but it was a neat idea.
REmake: Lisa Trevor was underused, didn't fixed things from the original i hated. Good changes like the enemies can open some doors, Crimsom Heads and other things well done.
RE Outbreak: retarded AI, but good changes, like the time factor of the T Virus infection and that the zombies can open doors.
RE4 (it's almost a different game, good for it's own merits, but not muh RE)

Anything not main series really did not interest me enough. So far, the only bad things I have to say about any of these games are:

RE0 - They tried something new and it just didn't do it for me. After RE4's success, I am glad they tried out a similar gimmick in RE5 and it fit way better in a game like that.

RE6 - Some of the controls really fucked with me, especially the inventory controls. Online play was dead on arrival, despite having a variety of different modes. I was tempted to get the DLC extra modes, but those would be even more dead. Still had fun with it. Playing with a friend made 5 and 6 far better. People should probably rank RE5 solo, RE6 solo, RE5 co-op, and RE6 co-op separately.

Are the Chronicles games a fun romp if I were to co-op them with a friend who's interested in RE's story?

My suggestion is to play the first playthrough of any and every main series RE game. Maybe skip RE1, since you've already done REmake. The dialogue is pretty Z grade movie funny, but if you are just looking at the gameplay, REmake just polished RE1.

Anyway, my reason behind the suggestion is that most RE games want you to do multiple playthroughs to truly beat the game. If you're just looking for more RE and more fun, keep it fresh. Switch the game you play after a playthrough. When you're all done, you can go back and enjoy things like playing Chris / Claire / a different unlocked difficulty.

If you played REmake Chris right now, you might get burnt out on REmake. I like coming back to a game and going "Oh, I don't remember the map 100%!" or "Damn, I forgot that this was going to happen!" Not that Chris' campaign is a carbon copy of Jill's, but there is mega overlap.
