I sit in my cubicle, here on the motherworld. When I die, they will put my body in a box and dispose of it in the cold ground. And in all the million ages to come, I will never breathe, or laugh, or twitch again. So won't you run and play with me here among the teeming mass of humanity? The universe has spared us this moment.
the customizable units feature is interesting even if aside from armored terraformers cheesing there's just no need ever to modify default ones and the overpretentious writing can click some buttons in certain people but overall it's nothing to write home about
Because it very nicely combined its theme with the gameplay. At first you just have simple science advancements you know and right now we already finished the secret project of the human genome. However as you advance you see how things just completely lose any of the moral limitations we find fundamental now. It starts with simple things like every body after dying having to go into the biotanks. But later things like cloning only the best, having cyborgs, and nanopaste that consumes everything in its path for more weapons.
That combined with the reflections of the various leaders give you a very good picture.
>>324014775 >the xenofungus might be alive and part of the planet >Yhey're alive? I never hheard of a libing fungos, I didn't take biology either. And you say they're part of the planet? that would explain why were on this planet.
>>324015028 The AI is the only problem with it. There's nothing old about it otherwise. No other wizard 4x ever managed to replicate the charm or the ammount of fucking around you could do with spells.
>>324016142 Actually there is no "best" ship in the game. There is no "worst" ship either Each ship is effective against a particular type of ship, while weak against another type of ship. And it depends on how you use the ship, each ship has a different strategy.
>one of my first SMAC games >expanding pretty well >suddenly get a 2 pop base which is about to get taken since I cant get more troops to it quickly >decide to burn it down so no one gets it >everyone is pissed >find out that does not stop on its own >everyone wants money to forget about it >pay 1 guy and 2 turns later he fucks me over anyway >decide to tell everyone to fuck off >enemy starts making needlejets and bombs my outer cities from his water bases >dont have a port so cant make ships to fuck him up >decide to make planet busters >nuke every city close enough to be within needlejet range >everyone mad >sea level starts rising >have massive population so I can order the sunscreen to be erected >build more bases so I can transport my nukes to those places to get in range >already wiped out 2 enemies before, with nukes another 2. >diedre, who resisted the most still has some bases >sunscreen doesnt work, water keeps rising >enemies start losing bases to water >keep nuking >whole map except a few mountains are flooded, with my ships I reign supreme >decide to end it with just nuking everything >at the end the whole planet is flooded, the few patches of land have constant xenofungus outbreaks and billions of people were consumed by the water
>>324019340 The only barrier today is dated graphics, UI and compat issues. I'm sure an HD remake (with nothing omitted or changed, naturally) would probably be eaten right up. Fuck how hard can it be to make a mod for civ4 with the same mechanics at least? oh wait, this current generation of devs only has the stones for 'beyond earth' quality
>>324019558 >mod civ 4 good luck with terrain height >le terrain height is not a mechanic we believe worth adding to the game >who needs the workshop? the only thing I disliked was how armored rovers ended up looking like vintage cars
>>324019780 >>324019878 The workshop would be a bitch but why not have a loose facsimile by building the parts individually (no attack, defence or move value) and combine them to the base unit on site with a special ability?
>>324020971 >niggerstralia is overpowered because extra trade routes >trade routes are broken as fuck >in both ways >spend the entire game facerolling opponents in between tedious trade restarting >you only get more powerful with every city/trade slot >you also get more trade routes to restart Who the fuck designed this game?
>>324020971 The main problem of Beyond Hope is that it doesn't have any character. A bit part of SMAC are the character/faction interactions and the fact that each faction is based upon ideologies and not nations.
Playing Not-Spain and fighting against Not-Russia on Not-Earth simply doesn't sound exciting at all.
I remember when I was, like, 8 or some shit and my teacher got inexplicably mad when I used 'terraforming' in some assignment shit because it wasn't a word you could find in the dictionary. Fucking bitch.
>>324020971 >someone asks me for help against some other country >OK, Im bored of peace >give me 10 turns to prepare >build carriers >who Im I attacking anyway? >the guys on the other side of the planet >fuck >ready to attack? >move my carriers there, take countless turns >finally there, this bitch doesnt have any cities on this coast >has a city one tile from the coast >cannot bombard because cannot see >planes dont have scout ability >get a land scout there >bombard the one city for a few turns before scout is killed >my "ally" didnt even move its units >why am I playing this shit?
>>324015925 I't still odd that they chose to give a mob of anti-intellectual mongoloids an industry bonus. A society that bends over backwards in order to find enough manual labor for all of its citizens should basically have -5 to everything.
>>324023915 Is there a way to make a custom, balanced water faction? I tried giving penalties to growth and industry, but it still outpaces other factions handily. I still love starting in the water though. Fuck land
>>324023501 if you modify the terraformer to equip the heavies armor you can park them in chokepoints and whatnot to have enemy stacks almost suicide by reaction fire trying to take them out and they cost fuck all resources/turns to make compared to other units that can do comparable damage
>start game bright future ahead for my people >good start most neighbors seem nice and committed to a good future and values. >this asshole comes up to me and says CREAM get the money Dollar Dollar bill y'all, money is the meaning to life and he is going to kill my people because my civ is the prime location for a galactic gas station >tries to bribe me >don't take the bribe he starts attacking to be an asshole. >literally wants to bring all the worst aspects of modern life into the future with his awful philosophy and views.
Is he the biggest dick in any of these games? Literally wants to put a dollar sign on everything of value.
>>324019558 There was an attempt for a SMAC mod for Civ 4, but it failed. the engine had no support for most of the cool terraforming stuff like changing the terrain level, altering rainfall patterns etc.
>>324026887 >playing as zakharov >morgan on comms >see what he wants >"I have amassed a lot of wealth and I would like to share it" >suspicious >"Im willing to give you 100000 energy credits, but before I can complete the transfer we need to pay some fees to the global energy banks" >"due to legal circumstances Im unable to pay these fees myself, or any of my people" >"however if you can spare this small cost, I will be able to complete my donation" >"it will be merely 500 credits, which you should deposit in this account; #######" >reply "this shit again morgan?" >close comms
Sid Meyer: "FUCK! There's kids coming onto the internet reading about games and they don't even know about our fuckin' space game franchise. Let's get some shills cross-postin' my epic "DRONE RIOTS" may may over the imageboards."
>>324025427 >It's a challenging confrontational statement which people are motivated to argue with or against. Who would argue against SMAC being the best? Pandora tried but failed shot. Beyond Earth didn't even try.
>>324024097 No, because water takes up a huge amount of space, allows crazy food production thanks to kelp giving +3, and just being save from everyone else till they get any presence on the water. On land deidre might have worms, but santiago has better troops and yang has industry. So everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Meanwhile a water faction just has straight up water improvements, making it very hard to counter. The only way to balance them on water would nerf them so hard they cant function on land.
>>324026887 Nigga he only got on alpha centauri because he was one of the backers of the mission and built a secret hideout in the ship for himself. Then he used greed to get a group around him. It is a huge piramid scheme with him on top, and if he wins he can prevent law from getting to him
Rumor is the man whose franchise this game is molested an underage girl and went to County Jail in '92. From there he's said to have told the deputies that he "Hates Niggers" and wanted moved to another cell. After he got released he was picked up for solicitation of black granny tranny prostitute. Drone Riots.
I have never played MoO but SotS is a 3d battlemap forced to the 2d plane. Ships can go in three directions but everything is biased towards a 2d plane.
Does MoO have actual kinetic motion in ship battles? THe different FTL drive doesn't just affect how you move in strategic map but also tactical map. Your ships can overshoot their destination by quite a bit if you tell em to bull-rush over there, and all weapons that do kinetic damage like cannons impart some motion onto the enemy ship when they hit.
>>324029367 >lal tried to clone his wife so he could fuck her again Jesus its funny how people twist his words. Just look at the context. It was a quote from times of bereavement. Second of all the setup was obviously of a poetic notion if you look at how the wording. He didnt say, hey I will take my wifes' corpse and clone a few one. He said: I lost my wife and feel bereaved, but with new technology that doesnt have to be the end. What a curious thought we might never had had otherwise.
>>324029669 Yeah but if you look at the techs yoyu would expect that you encover it later. The first few techs are mostly rediscoveries and research of the data on the ship. Then you get the techs that are close to it and we in the current day almost finished. Then you have futuristic tech. Why would the punishment sphere be later than the nervestaples
1) Endless Engineer buying 2) AI armies going in circles 3) AI never occupying nodes 4) AI never using some of the units 5) Really shitty spell selection and repeated Dispel casts on overland enchantments that don't really hurt the AI. 6) Inability for AI to buy items from Merchants...
The list goes on and it's long. Look at the patch notes to see how much of that shit was fixed.
>>324031995 >talking about Xfire factions seriously just let those rest.
>>324031607 That said the amount of changes the faction does is is insane. When you look at others they shift around 2 or 3 stat points. Also -2 planet seems like a really bad nerf since you will get brainraped by worms. Growth also seems annoying.
You mentioned Insecticide, which is an adequate patch, but there is a better patch now. There's also a mod that based off of Insecticide called "Caster of Magic", which touches on just about every aspect of the game to make it a bit more interesting, fast paced, and makes the AI considerably better.
They're both by the same guy, so if you track down Caster of Magic, you shouldn't have much trouble finding the vanilla patch.
i've been dreaming of a fantasy-mod of SMAC for some time now
the basic idea would be a medieval high fantasy conversion of the visuals, fluff and sound effects while leaving the gameplay identical
Infantry would be footmen, speeders horsemen, the artillery special ability bows so you could make regular archers or mounted archers in the workshop
The Xenofungus and mindworms could be anything from Demons, Undead or other monsters. Fighting them being so horrifying that it's the equivalent of going against mindworms.
The Gaians would be a faction of witches who specialize in communing with these horrors and unleashing them on the others. Morgan leader of the Merchants Guild, Miriam leading Crusaders to wipe out evil from the land and so on.
Instead of science the techs in the game would be explained with fairly low-tech equivalents at the start, i.e. (Hologram Theatre and Energy Bank) and eventually transition into more and more magical territory.
