I think that 3rd is the most overrated BoF game.
Lots of filler (especially that entire Rhapala arc which was absolutely pointless, second part of a game basically re-uses all locations again), weak plot outside of the very first arc, uninteresting cast of heroes with the exception of Rei and Garr.
The only thing it has going on for it is dragon transformation system which makes an already piss easy game even easier.

4 is a highest point of series with amazing and surprisingly brutal plot. Yuna surviving the entire events and going unpunished was a very ballsy move and made the game truly amazing, eastern empire was one of the most horrifying depictions of militaristic Japan i've seen in games.

The most fun I had was playing with shaman and party combos, then storming the dungeon with shaman Katt/Lin, shaman Sten and shaman Jean/Tapeta, annihilating everything in my path with their skills put together. I tried playing 2 recently and gave up rather quickly. It's like the game placed some required events before me without providing any motivation or reason to care. Supposedly I'm off to prove my dog buddy innocent, but but nothing that happend was connected to it. I went forward for no reason, did some stuff for no reason and a few people joined me for no reason. Gave up shortly after the boss in the well.

By free you mean mammoths wiping your entire team and you before you take an action. Let alone he charges for 1 turn.

Shaman Katt with shaman Sten are better. Katt and Sten are faster that all the enemies in the last dungeon but one. Attack formation, Katt charges first since she's faster then Sten, Sten uses his special ability and replaces current random encounter with another. Katt keeps her charge from previous battle and acts first in the next, in attack formation most likely eliminating a single target. Most enemies come in packs of 2, so your casualties in form of HP are reduced in comparison to when you use Jean and watch yourself being beaten for 2 turns. Buffs like attack up are also kept when Sten generates a new battle, which means Katt can securely -1 tough targets like breaking-through-the-floor demons or dragons before their turn. All you do is letting Katt cast attack up (or any buff) from MedusaSH/Ares Shield on herself or anybody and Sten use Switch. Repeat as needed. This way you can get your entire party buffed before desired encounter (like vs. Goo Kings or Night Riders) without getting hit. TigerSD/Vigor Sword from minigame which heals for 100 HP is very useful here and I am pretty sure you don't need me to explain why.

Shaman Jean also keeps his charge between Sten's switches, but as he's slow, he isn't that useful. He also misses a lot vs. Night Riders. Speed buff may help him, but it works only in GBA.

1 was the first rpg I ever played and I loved it even though I didn't finish it until years later. I remember not figuring out what to do around the time Nina left.

I think it could be remade and do well. They would have lots of creative room to fiddle with the story and add elements. Being able to see a fully 3D version of Nina's kingdom, the stone robot, the desert tomb, the underwater kingdom, etc. would be neat.

It has some very charming music typical of Capcom back then that could be rearranged.
