What? When you pick up a Wii U gamepad your thumbs naturally land on the sticks. Just as if you were holding a tray or something.
How else do you hold the Wii U gamepad?
If anything you need to stretch the thumb to reach the sticks on a Playstation controller since they naturally land on the buttons.
And then you lower the grip of your hand(s) slightly on the Wii U gamepad to reach the buttons. Which its shape easily allows.

Now I love the Playstation controllers and they are my preferred controllers for fighting games and pretty much everything barring shooters. But you need to extend your thumb(s) to reach the sticks. That's a fact. But I honestly don't mind and don't see the big deal.
And in comparison, you don't need to stretch your thumb at all on the Wii U gamepad. If you use the stick primarily you hold the pad at the top. If you use the buttons primarily you hold it a step lower.

I still don't see the big deal though. I would gladly pick a PS3 controller over the Wii U gamepad for my fighting games anyday. But this whole thumb position and thumb stretching is clearly less of an issue with the Wii U gamepad. How is it not? And why does it even matter? It never felt like a big deal with the Playstation controller.
