Why did Nintendo pick such a generic cover for SM64?

Also, lore thread. Either here or >>323976520.

These are always very productive. Do Nintendo game not have an end in depth?

Because NoA is and has always been, fucking retarded in everything they do.

The Jap cover is stylish and has that old school Mario feel that Sunshine and post lost.

3D renders were in at the time

even the jap cover is one

tfw didn't know myself, so I did research on it.

WHAT WHAT WHAAAAAT?

SM64 HAD TWO RELEASES IN JAPAN
>>
>>323979270

The jap cover is the same "mario flying with the wing cap" box art as the US version, but with a slightly different background.

The cartridge art is a different 3D render though, It's pretty boring compared to the US version to be honest

Apparently Americans like 3D renders. Just look at how MGS' box art in America after 2 has been shit.
>>
>>323979590
They did this for a couple of games, including Wave Race 64. I never knew that SM64 was one of them, though. Most likely, several Japanese companies believed that the gaming market was far stronger and much more willing to spend in Japan than overseas. I remember Squaresoft / SquareEnix doing this with several of their games.

Without the white background and snazzy gold emblemed ring, without the penguin and the ice land, and with an ugly, uncentered zoom of Mario with an uglier, unnecessary red bar that looks retarded on the side.

>>323980927
The spherical world's have been a thing since the mid 90s with Nintendo. Started with the 100 Marios demo that even turned into the cancelled Super Mario 128 game. That turned in Pikmin. Finally the concept finally debuted in Mario Galaxy 11 years later.

Seriously. To add fuel to the fire the annoying shaking AUTOMATICALLY DISABLE when the battery gets low, meaning there is already code written to disable vibration. Once you're having this problem you've already bought the dawn thing.

It's just an edited leftover from the Japanese release where you had to find some book for an old man or something.

The Wind Waker was also edited for the NA release. One of the Triforce Shards is supposed to troll you, by making you chase down map after map after map, to find it.

There is something beautiful about genericness and simplicity. At least, that's often the case. When people see something generic that represents the franchise, it feels rather "whole" and "pure" and for lack of a better word, very "Mario". It's comforting; it touches a psychological nerve and makes it feel like home. It seems to be saying: welcome back to the world of Mario.

I remember being scared of the original dinosuar when I first saw it, it had a lot to do with that level itself being really creepy to begin with. Dark toned music and map, bottomless pits around every corner, spiders, plague doctor shyguys, fucking Indiana Jones Corneria boulders rolling at you, and then you have to take a long ass elevator ride down to the dinosaur's lair.

Although the design of the original is pretty spoopy on its own, it was more like the culmination of everything scary about that level (to a little kid). If it were in a more lighthearted level it wouldn't have been scary.

I'm replaying OOT3D when taking breaks from FE:Fates and it feels so weird playing as Link, knowing he dies in some unfortunate way.

Plus, I think the red left eye some artists give him looks kind of cool, even if it is a little edgy. I wonder how he lost his other eye, though.

I wonder where he got that armor from.

And most of all, I wonder how he died so regretfully.
