I've currently got an i5-2400 that I'm pretty sure

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

I've currently got an i5-2400 that I'm pretty sure is bottlenecking me right now
If I had to upgrade in the next few days, would a i5-4690 or i5-6500 be the better choice? Or should I step up to a 6600 or 6600k? On somewhat of a budget so not too high end

Pretty much should I go Haswell or Skylake, they're both about the same price right now
>>
Buy a $40 fan and overclock it.
>>
>>323971330
I'd like to but it's shit at overclocking
I'm also giving my old CPU/Mobo to a friend for their first build once I get my upgrade

nice background weeb
>>
>>323971134
why would it be? what games do you feel it's restricting performance?
>>
>>323972525
Mainly emulators actually, and again I'm looking to upgrade also so I can give my current one to a friend
>>
>>323972949
If you are referring to PS2 emulation, it is highly unlikely upgrading to a 4690/6500 will give you any performance improvement.
>>
>>323973147
What about preparing for Citra or CEMU? And doesn't CPU help a lot with performance at higher resolutions?
>>
>>323971134
Get a 6500 at least. Don't invest in an outdated DDR3 platform.

Have fun finding DDR3 sticks a few years from now in reasonable prices.
>>
You're gonna need a new mobo regardless of which you go for. Skylake isn't much better than Haswell, maybe 5-10%. Skylake Mobos have a lot of new tech like m.2 ports and USB C. Gaming wise, any of those CPUs will be sufficient. If prices are the same go skylake for new tech.

I'm running a 3570K overclocked to 4GHz and I have no issues running any PS2 emulated game at all (you know, unless the issue is in the ROM itself).

>>323975618
> a few years from now
Exactly. So might as well stick with DDR3 at the moment, considering that there's no major performance spike, and then swap to DDR4 when it becomes the new DDR3.

Or you could be smart and get a DDR4 platform since the price is almost identical now and it has much more life in it.
DDR3 will be phased out in two years.
>>
>>323977564
I doubt it'll be as quick as two years.

And even if that's the case...why don't I just wait two years for the price to come down even more?

Because DDR3 and DDR4 cost the same now and DDR3 prices will only go up as it's being phased out.

Except upgrading to DDR4 involves me buying a new motherboard and CPU (I'm not OP, obviously). Whereas I can stick with DDR3 until I need to upgrade the motherboard and CPU.
>>
By a non-K skylake and overclock.
>>
>>323978306
That's fine. But people should stop telling others that they should go with DDR3 for new rigs.
>>
>>323977801
>Because DDR3 and DDR4 cost the same now and DDR3 prices will only go up as it's being phased out.
>as its being phased out
No one will be buying DDR3 in a few years when it's more expensive and being phased out, genius, that's the point. There's no reason to go DDR4 right now so wait until it's cheaper and offers a significant performance boost.
>>
>>323978432
Oh, for sure, if you're building a new rig and you've got the cash you might as well shell out. If you're only upgrading RAM or even just a CPU, I just don't see the point of shelling out for a new motherboard if it's not needed.
>>
>>323978432
>DDR4 offers little in the way of performance over DDR3
>Isn't any cheaper now but will be cheaper later when it becomes standard
Why would you buy that shit now?

Opinion from someone who builds computers for both Casual and Gaming use, and has done so for about 10 years now.

Get the 4690k. Skylake has very little performance increase over the 4690k, so you might as well save yourself some cash and get a decent GPU with the money you'd save.

PS2 Emulator has had a few jumps lately, so as long as you get the latest Dev Build, a 4690k and a decent GPU will do wonders.

Don't invest in retarded ass DDR4 ram, seeing as it's not the norm, and it won't be for several more years. It's overpriced as fuck.
>>
>>323977563
/g/ shits themselves if you mention amd apus. they recommend intel and an amd gpu

I just bought 8gb of DDR3 RAM and don't want to buy more

>>323979148
Is it worth an extra $40 for having it unlocked?
Right now the regular 4690 and the 6500 are both $200
>>
>>323979148

I got a great deal on Skylake i5, and DDR4 back in November. Not even Black Friday deals, either.

My i5 6600k ran me about $230, $255 with fan.

16GB DDR4 for about $80.

While we're at it, what's a good motherboard to go along with these CPUs?
>>
>>323980040

Stay away from MSI.

ASUS is pretty good for motherboards. There's enough variety out there that you can buy for the features you want. So just think about what you want and go with that instead of asking /v/ to tell you what they would buy for themselves.
>>
>>323979341
A good portion of them are creaming themselves over Zen at the moment. I'm mildly interested to see how it goes.

>>323979670
Literally Google it.
>>
i thought the tech news rumor mill was ZEN has likely been pushed back out of 2016 into 2017

which is a huge fucking problem. I myself had been trying to wait for ZEN since intel are monopolistic sleazy fucks, but I don't think I can wait much longer. Not another year and a half, at least, for ZEN to actually reach the consumers

i was figuring skylake because I tried to build a Haswell-E and a Skylake on newegg and honestly the skylake didn't come out much more expensive but has the lower power draw and DDR4
