I joined a club at uni. Plays mostly melee. I'm trying to improve, but it's hard to learn fundamental tech when you only play against others who are more experienced and on the offensive. What's the easiest way to find a copy for myself and practice at my dorm?

I'm gonna have to disagree here actually.
Shit characters will force you into non-ideal positions and scenarios and will force you to learn at a higher rate to counter what your opponent is doing.

Low tiers aren't gonna make you worse at the game. And if you have an affinity for them? by all means practice and play them. You might catch a lot of people offguard since they're not used to the matchups at all.

It's actually better to know at least the core of all characters, helps with matchups and the most important thing in Melee: fundamentals. Someone that has only played Fox his/her entire life will still do well with other characters if he actually know the fundamentals, you know, spacing, footsies, option select, all that stuff.

Really easy to do and many ways to do it.

With Nintendon't you can just put the iso in a SD card/Flashdrive and run it from there. Maybe you'll need a custom cMios, you can Google that out.

You can also burn the iso on a disc and launch it from any, well, launcher.

basically just paste it into the sd card under apps/nintendont, rename the file to boot.dol

after that, create a folder on the root of sd called "games", create another folder (preferably the game name, but it really doesn't matter) then paste the ISO in there, but rename it to "game"

so it should be SD/games/Smash Bros Melee/game.iso (if it's already an ISO you don't need to add the .iso extension)

Don't do this. Practicing on Dolphin will get you used to input lag. If you're going to play in a competitive setting you would only practice on CRT.

I might be wrong here but I'm pretty sure some monitors, including but not limited to CRT monitors, are as lagless as playing on a GameCube and CRT TV. Competitive Melee only uses CRT TVs because GameCubes/Wiis are mandatory (or else Nintendo would flip their shit over Dolphin) and they don't play nice with modern displays, no matter how lagless the display is. It creates input lag that isn't inherent to the display itself. Mango, Leffen, etc. practice and netplay on Dolphin, the onus is just on the player to have the proper hardware. Definitely don't do it if you're using some shitty Dell LCD though.

it's not really an issue using dolphin on an HDTV, the reason there's input lag if you go from a wii/GC to an hdtv the game has to upscale the resolution, which takes a few milliseconds. A computer running dolphin through HDMI is running the resolution it's natively supported by, so there's no upscaling to be done

I do have one of the new smash ball ones, it's not bad, but even the same model can have little differences, when you're trying to do short hops with 2 frame windows sometimes a button that's a little "softer" is easier to do it more consistently

It's not really worth diving too deep into a low tier though. If you're actually serious about playing, eventually you're going to want to switch to a top tier.

I think playing a low tier might develop some bad habits, and set you back in the learning curve for top tier characters. Nothing you learn with DK is going to help your Marth

Any tips for doing tilts efficiently? I got most thing right, but I still struggle with things like f-tilt with Fox to set up gimps and such.

Take some time in training and see just how little you have to tilt the stick to get a tilt going.

The GC controller has a very tight deadzone, just resting your thumb on the stick with a little bit of pressure is enough to register a direction input, even if it doesn't quite feel like it

It doesn't affect gameplay at all. I use it and it works just fine. the only difference is some elements that should be off screen are sometime shown (training mode menu is peeking out from the left always on widescreen mode) but in regular Melee VS mode it's functionally identical

Yep, shield grabs are a horrible option, but it destroys people that aren't good.

The thing is, people should know how to space their attacks, and also most attack push your shield back enough to not get grabbed anyway, or get past you and grabbing is not good.

There are also better options OoS, like Wavedash or Nair. As Fox you sure have 100 things you could do instead of shield grab.

His neutral pretty much sucks in addition to that. He can pill and hope the opponent fucks up. Also his combo game isn't very impressive, most of it can be DI'd out of very easily, it's hard to get 2 hits unless the opponent is a nice guy and DI's in at all times or gets fucked by a raw fair.
